Foreword

O

On behalf of the people of Uganda through its Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities together with the Uganda Tourism Board are excited to host this year’s 39th Annual Africa Travel Association Congress.

This offers us yet another opportunity to welcome the global community to our country that they may enjoy our heritage, where there is unpolluted, tranquil, clean and warm fresh air which we are learning to value and not take for granted. Instead, we now know that we are blessed to live in a corner of planet earth that is gifted with the natural beauty like no other. Uganda’s scenery made up of high snow-capped mountains, beautiful hills splashed across the green agricultural plains that truly look like a mythical painting, with fresh water lakes teaming with life, with huge national parks where wildlife run free as a testimony of the paradise Uganda is, that thrive alongside the very rich cultures of Uganda, is indeed a worthy place to visit, so I congratulate you for making the decision and the time

you a truly memorable and successful

From

ATA president

I am very pleased and honoured as ATA President to be part of the 2014 World Congress held in Kampala, Uganda.

I am encouraged that, following the hosting of the Congress in West and Southern Africa, we are now moving to East Africa. The base of the ATA Headquarters in New York remains very strategic as not only is the United States a leading tourism source market for Africa, New York City itself is a commercial, financial and political hub for the entire globe. I am very enthused by the strengthening of functional partnership between ATA, New York University-Africa House, the AU Mission and now also with the Africa Development and even the US State Department. This is definitely a winning team for African tourism. Congratulations to all involved in

Uganda is proud to be hosting the 39th Africa Travel Association (ATA) Congress. ATA has a long history of advocating for and promoting tourism development in Africa and it is a great honour for Uganda to join the list of countries that have had an opportunity of hosting an ATA Congress.

Following the success of the 38th Congress by Cameroon, we are looking forward to an equally spectacular event this year, continuing in the tradition of previous ATA Congresses. Under the theme “Tourism is Everyone’s Business”, this year’s congress program has a variety of exciting sessions on a wide range of subjects including Tourism and Media, The Diaspora Tourism Market, Africa Selling Africa and Faith Based Travel. The Congress has a number of activities running alongside which include a Tourism Social Media Class, Culinary Tourism Experience showcasing Uganda’s delicious Cuisine, a Youth Forum and a Tourism Investment Forum focusing on

History of

Africa Travel Association (ATA)

The Backdrop Post-colonialism tourism in the 1960’s and 1970’s was not leisure tourism, as we know it today. Rather, it was the exodus transportation of the former colonists back to their countries of origin, leaving on-the-ground tourist services of the newly independent states in shambles. There were exceptions: Kenya hunting safaris continued and the incoming operators remained as a cohesive sector. South Africa and the country’s then-still colonized neighbours – known today as Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana – also had a functioning hunting safari industry. Hunting safaris, with the “Big Five” were the primary appeal of Africa through the 1970’s.

Welcome to the

Welcome to the land of abundance; welcome to the Pearl of Africa where a smile is second nature to the folks. It was in 1908, in his book My African Journal that Sir Winton Churchill described Uganda as “from end to end a beautiful garden where the staple food of the people grows almost without labour”, adding, “Does it not sound like a paradise on earth? It is the Pearl of Africa”.

MISS TOURISM By Solomon Oleny

It is easy to ignore many things but not a gorgeous woman, especially a woman with beautiful brains. Taking this to consideration, the Ministry of Tourism through the Uganda Tourism Board in early August organised the annual beauty pageant. Miss Tourism Uganda sets out to look for a female ambassador who would market Uganda as a Prime Tourism destination to both Ugandans and the whole world. The beauty contest was organized under the theme “Beauty with a Purpose” in nine regional clusters namely Buganda, Busoga, Teso, Eastern, Toro, Ankole, Bunyoro, Northern and Kigezi. It all started when President Museveni established a fully-fledged Tourism Ministry to promote and manage Uganda’s Tourism. The 20 things you shouldn’t miss in

Uganda 1

Gorilla tracking One of the quintessential Uganda experiences is tracking mountain gorillas in both Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park in the southwestern part of the country. Very few experiences in life match the first meet up with these giant cousins of man. These are enormous animals: up to three times as bulky as the average man and five times stronger than the biggest rugby player and yet despite their fearsome appearance, gorillas are remarkably peaceful. Bwindi is home to more than half of the world’s remaining endangered mountain gorillas. This biological diverse region also provides shelter to a further 120 mammals, including chimps and baboons plus 350 bird species.

Source of the Nile

3

Declared as one of the seven wonders of Africa, the source of the mighty River Nile in the eastern town of Jinja is a must-see. This is where the world’s longest river kicks off its 6,650 KM-long journey northwards. Standing where explorer John Speke stood in the 19th century, take a picture with the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, go for boat ride across the river and into Africa’s largest fresh water lake, Victoria, see birds, monkeys and other wildlife. A trip to the Source of the Nile simply priceless. Jinja, which is dubbed the “Adventure Capital of East Africa”, is 80 kilometres from Kampala and there is still a lot to see along the way including the road-hugging Mabira Forest, and extensive sugarcane

and horse riding.

As one of Uganda’s traditionally forest-dwelling people, the Batwa regard the forest as a pharmacy, garden, hardware store, place of worship, etc – and they are not the least shy about sharing their profound knowledge of the forest and its bounty. Once there, they will demonstrate ancient practices such as hunting, building a pygmy hut, harvesting honey, traditional music and dancing for which they are famed. This is the closest you will get to the ancient life.

Queen Elizabeth National Park There is a reason why Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most visited game park. The never-ending savannas, humid forests, sparkling

Mountains of the Moon

6

Rwenzori mountain ranges, sometimes referred to as Mountains of the Moon, climb high from the Albertine Rift Valley floor and provide a stunning backdrop to the Queen Elizabeth National Park. The highest peaks are permanently snow-capped. Snow on the equator is a must-see indeed! The Rwenzoris are hosts to the widest variety of mountain flora in Africa and for this reason, is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The Rwenzori Mountains are popular with climbers who trek through rainforests and alpine meadows to the snow-capped Margherita summit which stands at 5,109 metres.

Kidepo National Park Few tourists make it as far north as Kidepo Valley, but those who do are rewarded with not only the best selection of animals, but some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa. Situated up in the country’s remote northeastern corner, Kidepo contains rolling savannas extending towards mountain ranges in three countries, Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan. Kidepo has – in recent past – won a number of travel accolades including being named one of the best game parks in Africa by CNN. Distant mountain ranges touching the sky, large herds of buffaloes together with the sprawling grasslands create picturesque scenery – at times – making it look like a painting. Kidepo was once the playground of Idi Amin and you can still visit the haunting ruins of a lodge that could just as easily have been designed as a massive bunker.

Bird watching in Uganda

You can also visit an indigenous tribe the Ik here besides bird

watching, and hiking on the several rocks.

Uganda is one of the most popular birding destinations in Africa hosting over 50% of bird species on the continent. The country boasts over 1060 bird species which is 11% of world’s bird species – many of them are endemic, meaning they can only be found here and about. Given the concentration of so many birds in this relatively small country means that birders are able to see several birds with relative ease. All the beaches and islands on L Victoria including Lutembe beach near Kampala offer birders the ultimate chance to see both migratory and resident birds. Bwindi was

Explosion Craters

Uganda has many extinct volcanoes known as explosion craters that

dot the landscape in the west. The craters are concentrated in three areas; the Katwe explosion craters within the Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Bunyaruguru crater field near the Kichwamba escarpment and the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Field

located near Kibale National Park. Many of the creators are home to freshwater and in the Katwe area a couple of craters have saline lakes. The explosion craters are very scenic and offer great views from the rim.

Sipi Falls Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls in Eastern Uganda in the district of Kapchorwa, on the edge of Mt. Elgon near the Kenyan border. With its longest drop standing at 100 metres, Sipi is one stunning view of a crashing waterfall. Trekking to the viewing point is exhausting but rewarding as once you get there your body and soul will be rejuvenated by the stunning view and the cool breeze of the crashing water. 30

Caldera on Mt Elgon Straddling the Kenyan border east of Mbale town in eastern Uganda, Mt. Elgon is the eighth-highest mountain in Africa and it rises from the broadest base of any free-standing mountain in the world. Elgon’s tallest peaks form a jagged circle around the more-or-less-intact caldera, which has a diameter of about 8 kilometres( making it one of the largest in the world). You can also visit the many caves within the park.

Kampala City

Despite being Uganda’s capital and largest city, Kampala – seen

from one of its several hills – still gives an impression of a town protruding out of a rainforest. This dynamic and engaging city still boasts a large part of greenery and several worthy attractions to keep you occupied for a couple of days. Most of Kampala’s attractions are set on its several hills. The glamorous Gadaffi Mosque on Old Kampala Hill boasts the best view of all of Kampala from the top of its minaret. The mosque itself is also an impressive piece of art with great architecture and tourists are allowed to check it out. Mengo hill boasts Kabaka’s palace and the notorious Idi Amin Torture chamber. Kampala is also the home of Africa’s solitary Bah’ai temple while you can also explore the humongous cathedrals of Namirembe and Rubaga, both sitting on separate hills. There is also a selection of craft shops in Kampala and a plethora of nightspots to cater for party animals – because in Kampala, the party

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine

If you’re a faith trust put your faith and trust in the Namugongo

story to move you. This is where more than 20 catholic and Anglican martyrs were burnt alive on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda in June 1886. Consequently, Christians from all over the world throng these shrines – located about 15km from Kampala – to pay their respects every June 3rd. Of course June 3rd – the pilgrimage day – would be the perfect timing, but visit Namugongo any day and the story is there for you to hear and see. A church was constructed in the shape of a traditional Baganda hut in memory of the martyrs. It stands on 22 copper pillars representing the 22 catholic martyrs.

Biku Church

16

Church is a biblical word for “assembly but there is a new house

of God which has redefined the term church. Located about 18KM from the West Nile town of Nebbi is what could as well be the world’s smallest chapel at Biku. Standing at a height of 8ft and a width of about 2.5metres, Biku Church can only accommodate three people, including the preacher. Africa Travel Association Magazine

Sempaya Hotsprings

Located in Semuliki National

Park, the Sempaya Hot springs are some of the famous attractions of western Uganda. Hot springs bubble up from the depths of Sempaya to demonstrate the powerful subterranean forces that have been shaping the rift valley during the last 14 million years. The outer spring is dominated by a boiling geyser (103 degrees C) which spurts up to 2m high from a white, iced cake-like base of precipitated mineral.

finest white sand beaches and burning sunsets - the kind of place you’ll want to seek out a hammock and bring a good book. You can also go fishing or decide to join the locals for a village walk.

Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Uganda is home to the big five of the lion, leopard, elephant,

buffalo and the rhino. But while you can find all the other four roaming freely in many of Uganda’s game parks, the rhino can only be seen at Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The sanctuary, a three-hour drive from Kampala, is a self-sustained conservation project. Besides the foot rhino trekking, other activities here include birding walks, shoebill canoe rides and nature walks.

The Equator Isn’t it just plain unambitious for one to visit Uganda and fail to reach the equator – the middle of earth? Uganda straddles the equator, and it doesn’t take much imagination to guess that the cheesiest photo opportunity is to take a picture with a foot in both hemispheres. There is not much to see here as this is simply an imaginary line but the feeling is good and on your way there, the landscape is beautiful.

ala Rafsanjan Abbey Tatya

Situated on rolling hills some 10 kilometres inland of Lake. Victoria and covering up to 72.97 square miles, Kampala, the economic and social hub of Uganda is the archetypal African capital. It is not only one of the safest urban destinations in Africa, but also one of the greenest. It is not quite as populous or chaotic as most African cities and yet Kampala is far from dull. Despite being Uganda’s most populous city – keeping around 1.65 million people – Kampala basks from very low crime rates and a widespread feeling of security, so residents here are always happy to lend a stranger a helping hand.

Investment in the Climate Pearl of Africa’s

Tourism Sector

It is an undisputed notion that Africa’s abundant, diverse and fascinating landscape, fauna and flora provide a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. If harnessed sustainably, it will contribute significantly to the long-term development of the continent. H. E. the President of Uganda was fond of speaking about the balkanisation of Africa in his bid to rally his colleagues to unite into a formidable industry and market in the arena of world trade and investment.

East Africa to market its tourism as a region

Potential an The

of tourism industry in Uganda

Africa Travel Association Magazine

By Isaac Sebakijje

In one of his speeches, the president of Uganda indicated that the newly discovered oil is a finite resource. He went on to say that oil will be exhausted and finished after some decades and that tourism will go on forever if we do not mismanage it. The Uganda vision 2040 identifies the tourism sector as one of the core sectors that will drive Uganda’s socio-economic transformation over the next thirty years. As of August 2014, Uganda Central Bank reported that tourism injected $1.4b in Uganda’s economy to become the top export earner replacing the estimated $800m remittances Ugandans send home. Given relative peace and stability, the country is fast becoming an interesting and discerning destination with soaring direct investments in the sector. Uganda harbors the most spectacular scenic beauty complemented by substantial natural resources for tourism with a variety of landscape and ecosystems, climate and culture.
