Acknowledgment The production of the catalogue for the Officially Released Improved and Popular Sweetpotato Varieties for Uganda was accomplished with funding from the “Fast Tracking Access to Improved and Popular Varieties of Root Crops (Fast Track) project. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives of Tanzania funded the Fast Track project. We are also grateful to the McKnight Foundation and HarvestPlus. They have been the key stakeholders who provided funds that made the breeding and development of these varieties possible. We are grateful to the farmers who hosted and participated in the on-farm variety evaluation, which is the final step to the official release of the varieties.

Introduction Sweetpotato is the third most important crop contributing to food security and income in Uganda. As a source of calories, sweetpotato contributes approximately 19-21% of the total energy requirement. Therefore, concerted efforts have been placed on sweetpotato breeding by the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) in order to produce improved varieties that have end-user qualities; NARO has officially released 27 varieties. The varieties were developed with an objective of embedding key traits namely; resistance to Sweet potato virus disease (SPVD), Sweetpotato weevils (SPW), and Alternaria Blight (AB), high dry matter content, good root shape, acceptable culinary qualities, balanced Harvest Indices, and/or enhancedcarotene into a genetic background of high yield. Of the 27 varieties released, some have become very popular within and outside Uganda.

The catalogue for the officially released improved and popular sweetpotato varieties for Uganda is a compilation of sweetpotato varieties that were officially released by the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI), which is under the umbrella of NARO. These varieties are either recent releases or earlier releases that have remained popular with farmers. Some of these varieties are maintained for use as parents in our breeding program to improve the above mentioned key traits. Others are landraces; introductions from other breeding programs, or open-pollinated progenies of previously released varieties. The catalogue presents pictorials and basic characteristics for each of the varieties. Catalogue 2018
