Q&A with Mark Smith As a feature in this, and upcoming issues of our Update, we asked some questions of the partners of Slifer Smith & Frampton — Rod Slifer, Mark Smith, Harry Frampton and Jim Flaum — to give our readers a more personal look at our company and the work they’re doing . What is your “ideal vision” for the Vail Valley ten years from now?
Mark Smith was one of the founding members of Slifer Smith & Frampton Real Estate, started the Youth Foundation and is past chairman of the board of trustees for the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival.
The Vail Valley will continue to improve during the next ten years due to the focus on redevelopment which effectively “raises the bar” for the resort guest and the local community. There is virtually no land available for new development. It will become increasingly important to provide the appropriate focus and investment within the local community for housing, transportation, education, recreation and other needs. Our goal should be the constant improvement of the entire Valley.
For example, Riverfront Park is providing the people who live here with residences that are within walking distance of all the great things downtown Denver has to offer, as well as a major transportation hub at Union Station. It’s a scarce commodity, and we’re continuing to experience tremendous demand.
What “green initiatives” are currently being pursued by East West Partners in Denver?
Clearly every segment of the economy in every market has been impacted significantly by the recession. The good news is that the fundamentals of both Colorado and the Vail Valley are much stronger than other regions and will therefore recover ahead of other markets.
Matt Mahoney, our director of construction for Riverfront Park, has been spearheading a great deal of the green initiatives for us in Denver. For example, we’ve made a commitment to building all of our future, multi-family residences under the Built Green Colorado Program, which was introduced in 1995 and created through joint efforts of the HBA of Metro Denver, the Governor’s Office of Energy Management and Conservation, Xcel Energy and E-Star Colorado. It will greatly enhance energy efficiency for new buildings in the community, with our Row 19 residences serving as the pilot project for the new Built Green Multi-Family program in Denver.
What are some of the lessons you’ve learned from past experience?

Great locations will always do better than secondary locations. East West Partners makes it a priority to develop great projects in great locations where we believe there is a scarcity of product.
I’m looking forward to being outside and just enjoying the outdoors. On a business note, we’re working on a lot of new, ambitious ideas that will make the months ahead very exciting.
