People often tell me that entertaining and setting a table is a dying art, usually followed by, "I used to set tables, but not anymore" I wholeheartedly disagree I wouldn't say it's an art on its deathbed, but instead isanart intransition Theold wayof settingtablesand entertainingwasall about following the "rules," and either you knew the rules or you were judged for running afoul of them That rigidity is certainly dying, and I say, "Good riddance!" Entertaining is supposed to be fun and to bring people together Today when we entertain, it's more about those objectives than showing that we can follow the rules That said, these rules were not put in place to ruin a good time; quite the opposite. Some of them were intended to make a meal more inclusive and sociable, and those rules still very much apply. For example, when creating aseating assignment, try not to sit spouses next to each other, instead mixing up theguestsfor amorevibrant and inclusive dinner And, do not start eating until everyone is served, because a dinner party is a social gathering and "breaking bread" is about sharing a meal, not eating individually Theruleis:No one starts eating until thehost or hostessstartsor welcomes with a"Bon appetit " Another old-world rule worth keeping in mind isthat at atable,you should consciously converse with both the person to your right and to your left instead of monopolizingonepersonjust because

you are enjoying the conversation. Doing so will leave out the person on your other side, and no one wants to be left out of the conversation for an entire dinner. That is as true today as it has always been Then there's the aspect of eating with all of our senses, which is timeless. Taste: Of course, we always want a meal to be delicious, but the French have mastered the art of assembling a dinner menu that islike ajourney. Every courseworks in cooperation with every other, and each informs the next For instance, if the main course is a heavier red-meat dish, dessert would probably be lighter As much as a rich, chocolate dessert is lovely, it's probably too much after aheavy steak,but could beperfect after a lighter fish dish Sight: Setting a table should be a visual delight that welcomes your gueststo thetable.It'sstill abeautiful touch to set a table that makes your guests feel special and the meal an experience Fine porcelain, linen napkins, sparkling-crystal stemware, flowers and the jewel of the table, the silverware, are what take a meal to the next level. And do not forget dripless candles - they set the ambiance, and everyonelooksso much better in candlelight Beautiful silver items added to your table will also sparkle magically in candlelight Touch: This is where quality really makes a difference The weight of delicate crystal is unmistakable. The feel of genuine silverware or the finish of fine porcelain makes such a difference - the whole experienceof the

meal will be taken to the next level. However, a beautiful dining experience does not need to be formal All the same aspects of quality can be applied to casual dining. Much like foodie culture has shown us that fine, chef-created dishes can be enjoyed casually, the art of entertaining can also be casual.
