Welcome to Sligo today. Having grown up in the African American culture of the South, my parents were given a front row seat each week to the cuisine that has come to be known as “soul food.” According to the Urban Dictionary, the term Soul Food originated from a dark period in the history of the United States where enslaved blacks were able to take the meager foods that were made available to them at the time and transform them into a cuisine that is now known and loved by people from various cultures around the world. This cuisine is called “soul food” because of the soothing and comforting effect it produces, not just in one’s belly, but because of the feeling it produces in one’s heart as it brings back memories of family, friends and fellowship. Yes, there is “soul food,” but then there is also “food for the soul.” In today’s message we will examine the diet that we, as a community of faith, must have each and everyday of our lives if we are to develop into the kinds of disciples that bring glory and honor to our Creator and support to one another. - Charles A. Tapp

Summary of our Beliefs • The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

Responsive Scripture Reading Matthew Spielman John 17: 13-19 (NKJV) Leader: But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. Congregation: I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Leader: I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. Congregation: They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Leader: Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. Congregation: As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. All: And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

sabbath devotional

“If we do not love the Bible, we certainly do not love the God who gave it to us; but if we do love God, then no other book in the entire world will be comparable in our minds.” – Charles Spurgeon

A memorial service will be held for former Sligo member, Joseph Ruben Spicer on Sunday, May 6 at 10 a.m. here at Sligo Church. All are welcome. Joe passed away in North Carolina on January 22 at the age of 88. Joe taught communications at Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist University) and Howard University in the late sixties. He also managed thenclassical Christian music station, WGTS 91.9 FM for many years. Today’s Sanctuary flowers are in celebration of Don and Mary McFarlane’s wedding anniversary! Sligo Church has had a tradition of periodically having a yearbook done. The last one was done in 2012/2013. In years to come these will prove to be important keepsakes for our present and future members. LifeTouch has undertaken the task of creating a yearbook for us for 2018 and has scheduled the following dates for photographs to be taken: April 22 - April 25; April 29 May 2. (Sundays, 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. & Mon. - Wed., 2:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.) Pick up a LifeTouch brochure at a Welcome Desk in the Atrium or Foyer for more information and to schedule your appointment as instructed. You can also sign up for an appointment in the Atrium. Prayer Gathering 2018! Join us in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. each Wednesday evening for engaging study and transformative times of prayer.
