Welcome to Sligo today. I’m sure that most of us are familiar with the proverb, “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Although the source of this proverb is unknown, its roots have been traced back to the 17th century English theologian and historian Thomas Fuller’s work, A Pisgah-Sight of Palestine and the Confines Thereof. But regardless of its origin, the meaning of this proverb is pretty well known. The literal meaning behind, ‘its always darkest before the dawn,’ is that because dawn is ushered in when the first light begins to show over the horizon from the sunrise, there is the least amount of light that is present at this time. Although this may be its literal meaning, today it is used to refer to situations we encounter in life that always seem their worst just before they are on the verge of making a drastic improvement. As we continue our series, Christ First; A Journey Through the Book of Revelation, we encounter a situation in the opening of the fifth and six seals that by all accounts appears as though all hope is lost. That is until we are reminded once again that it’s always darkest before the dawn. - Charles A. Tapp

profile of giving - February 9

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. As Scripture teaches, we believe God became man in the person of Jesus Christ, saving us from sin by grace through faith. We believe the seventh-day Sabbath was established by God at Creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry as a gift of rest and rejuvenation for all. We celebrate the church as the diverse “new community” forged through the death and resurrection of Jesus, in which all are called, all are gifted, and all are valued. We anticipate Jesus’ personal and visible return to earth to raise the righteous dead, make the earth new, and dwell with His faithful children throughout eternity. We live out our love for Jesus by growing in His likeness and by serving our fellowmen.

Congregation: O LORD, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You, “Violence!” And You will not save. Leader: Why do You show me iniquity, And cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; There is strife, and contention arises. Congregation: Therefore the law is powerless, And justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.

Sligo Children’s Choir Joya Follette, director Footnotes: Treasure John has called Sligo home for nearly 2 years. Before attending Sligo, she joined a church plant formed by her family in League City, TX. Her leadership in music ministries gave her the confidence to serve at Sligo. She enjoys writing and singing in her spare time, while she studies English Literature online. Brianna Stewart has been attending Sligo for the past three years. Originally from Southern California, Brianna became involved in church at a young age and has participated in various ministries because of her love for God. Upon receiving her physics degree from Spelman College, Brianna moved to the Greater Metro DC area where she currently works in technology consulting and now serves at Sligo in the music and Young Adult ministries. Bianca Madanat began attending Sligo in 2012 and quickly began feeling at home. After going through a series of one-on-one Bible studies, she then made the decision to publicly declare her faith and love in Jesus and was baptized in July, 2018. Bianca is a proud mother of two, and spends her time between being a talented florist, freelance photographer, and has most recently begun assisting Sligo with her photography skills and the weekly newsletter.

sabbath devotional

“In seasons of severe trial, the Christian has nothing on earth that he can trust to, and is therefore compelled to cast himself on God alone. When no human deliverance can avail, he must simply and entirely trust himself to the providence and care of God. Happy storm that wrecks a man on such a rock as this! O blessed hurricane that drives the soul to God-and God alone!” ― Charles Spurgeon

Blood Pressure Screening, sponsored by the Health Action Team, is being held in the Atrium between 10:00 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. today. Information is available on various health topics.
