welcome Welcome to Sligo Church. Whether you are a member of this church community, a frequent visitor or a first time guest, you are an integral part of our worship experience today. In my message today, “Give Me Poverty” I will endeavor to unravel the first declaration in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount – “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” My limited understanding of scripture has led me to conclude that poverty of spirit is the pre-condition for accessing all blessings and acts of grace that God has in store for His children. Poverty of spirit is recognizing that there is nothing meritorious about us in God’s presence. All our accomplishments and possessions are like filthy rags in the presence of God. If we must be helped, we must throw ourselves on God’s mercy and accept His grace. Time and time again Jesus declared that He had come to save sinners. He does not condemn those who recognize their spiritual poverty and accept God’s bountiful bestowal of grace. He condemns those who are full of selfimportance and self-righteousness. Pride and self-importance got us into the mess we are in; poverty of spirit and humility will restore us to where God had intended us to be. - Don McFarlane

Summary of our Beliefs
• The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of
faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40)

King Solomon advices us to walk with the wise and become wise. Students from our academic institution, Washington Adventist University (WAU), will lead us in worship to end W.I.S.E. (Week In Spiritual Emphasis) with the theme “You’re Running Out of Time.” Felipe Soares, WAU senior and theology major, will share his sermon titled: “The Greatest Love Story.” Throughout the service, we will savor the majestic sounds of WAU’s Columbia Collegiate Chorale and New England Youth Ensemble.
