Welcome to Sligo Church. This week we experienced one of the biggest snow storms in the history of our city. Yours may have been that household searching for the front steps to your home or frantically looking for a babysitter while schools were closed for several days. Whatever challenging circumstances you may have faced this week, we can be thankful that none of life’s storms catch God by surprise. We are reminded that our praise is not rooted in our circumstances but in His trustworthiness! As a church we are so blessed to be on the campus of Washington Adventist University where students from around the world come seeking not only to develop mentally but also grow spiritually. One of the spiritual highlights of the student calendar is WISE week, which stands for Week In Spiritual Emphasis. Today our guest speaker, Richard Matthews, an upcoming Masters of Arts in Religion graduate from WAU, will be launching WISE week with his message entitled “Sudden Impact – Simon’s Story.”

Summary of our Beliefs • The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

“We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there’s nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.” - Oswald Chambers
JESUS PROJECT: Desire of Ages, Chapter 10, January 31 - February 6
Gladstone Gurubatham Memorial Service will be held today at 4:00 p.m. in the Sligo Sanctuary. Gurubatham, affectionately known as Dr. G, was a professor of psychology in the university’s School of Arts and Sciences for more than 50 years, and was honored at the Washington Adventist University Visionaries Gala in 2014 with an award for his “Excellence in Teaching Psychology and Social Sciences, and Excellence in Educational Leadership.” In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Washington Adventist University for the creation of a memorial scholarship fund. EQUIPPED FOR SERVICE: Equipping and training is an integral part of the work of any conference. The Potomac Conference takes this seriously and is coming to Sligo on February 6 with 30 equipping and training seminars. The program starts at 3:30 in the afternoon and ends at 8:30. A light boxed dinner will be served at 6:30 in the Atrium for all registrants. If you are not able to spend five hours at the event, why not plan on attending one or two seminars. Whether your passion is soul-winning, discipleship, multimedia, mentoring, leadership, worship, family life or something else, there will be at least one seminar that will help you to be more effective in responding to God’s call to service. Walk-in registrants can check-in at 3:00 p.m. *Child-care and a light boxed dinner will be provided for children who are 100% potty trained. Please register your child/children at the same time you register for your seminars.
