Welcome to Sligo today! A few years ago, someone shared with me an interesting story involving a long-time member of particular church. This member shared with them how while flying on business, they sat next to an individual that struck up a friendly conversation. As they began to share introductory information about themselves, somehow the conversation quickly moved to where each of them was from. When the member who shared this story mentioned that they were from the DMV, they were surprised to hear that so was their newly found acquaintance. But when the conversation somehow shifted to religion, there was even a bigger surprise in store for them. Not only did they discover that each of them were members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, it was also revealed that each of them were long time members of the same church. You guessed it, Sligo. Although there is some humor to be found in this story, there is also a hint of sadness as well. How far removed are we from the biblical model of what it means to be a community of faith when we are not even aware of who is sitting on the pew with us from week to week? - Charles A. Tapp

• The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

Lesson Bogdan Scur Introduction to New Curriculum Prayer
Bogdan Scur
A PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR O Lord, Length of days does not profit me Except the days are passed in thy presence, In thy service, to thy glory. Give me a grace that precedes, follows, guides, sustains, sanctifies, aids every hour that I may not be a moment apart from thee, but may rely on thy Spirit to supply every thought, speak in every word, direct every step, prosper every work, build up every mote of faith, and give me a desire to show forth thy praise; testify thy love Advance thy kingdom. I launch my bark on the unknown waters of this year, with thee, O Father, as my harbour, thee, O Son, as my helm, thee, O Holy Spirit, filling my sails. Guide me to heaven with my loins girt, my lamp burning, my ear open to thy call, my heart full of love, my soul free. Give me thy grace to sanctify me, thy comforts to cheer, thy wisdom to teach, thy right hand to guide, thy counsel to instruct, thy law to judge, thy presence to stabilize. May thy fear be my awe, thy triumphs my joy. Amen.

sabbath devotional
“Community is to be found at the intersection of the two segments of the cross, where those who are reconciled with God are reconciled together–where we love God with all we have and we love our neighbor as ourselves. It is where we learn to care and share, to challenge and support, to confide and confess, to forgive and be forgiven, to laugh and weep, to be accountable to each other, to watch over each other, to be servants together. It is the place of transformation.“ - Gilbert Bilezekian

To correct some editorial concerns, we have had to reprint the Curriculum. We apologize to those who were negatively impacted by the original version, but are happy to report that the updated version is available today. We pray that this Curriculum is a benefit to all of us here at Sligo. While the Curriculum will be studied during Sabbath School we encourage all of our members to engage with this study on Biblical Community. You may pick up a copy at a welcome desk or visit www.sligochurch.org/thepromiseofcommunity. The next Sligo Fellowship Potluck will be held on January 13. Guests are invited to join us, following the second service in the Fellowship Room. Members who wish to attend are requested to provide a vegetarian entrée, salad or dessert that will serve at least 10-12 people.
