Sligo Church has had a tradition of periodically having a yearbook done. The last one was done in 2012/2013. In years to come these will prove to be important keepsakes for our present and future members. LifeTouch has undertaken the task of creating a yearbook for us for 2018 and has scheduled the following dates for photographs to be taken: Sunday, July 29 & Monday, July 30. Sign up for an appointment at <http:// sligochurch.org/> You can also sign up in the Atrium. Atrium signups are not confirmed until you have been notified by LifeTouch. Sligo Book Club will meet on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Discipleship Room to discuss “World and Town” by Gish Jen. Save the Date! welcome Welcome to Sligo today. I’m sure that many of you are quite familiar with the well-known adage, “Actions speak louder than words,” which conveys the idea that a person’s actions reveal their true attitude about a particular matter rather than what may have been expressed. What about when it comes to the actions and words of Jesus? How can the actions of Jesus speak to us if we have no idea as to what they mean? For instance, why did Jesus lay sleeping in the boat in the midst of a turbulent storm while his disciples were fighting for their very lives? But if trying to understand Jesus’ actions isn’t challenging enough, then what do we do with some of the things that he has said that are equally confusing? For example, the time he told his disciples that if someone slaps you on your right cheek, that instead of retaliating in kind, you should offer them your left one also. Is Jesus promoting the idea that as believers we should adopt the stance of being pacifists in order to be his followers? Or is there a deeper meaning to his words? - Charles A. Tapp
Summary of our Beliefs • The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

sabbath devotional
“[To have Faith in Christ] means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already.” - C. S. Lewis
Summer Budget Booster: If you’ve been watching our Profile of Giving section in the bulletin, you’ve probably noticed that the offerings for our Church Budget are falling well short of the budgeted goal. Normally, we wait until the end of the year to give the extra boost to our budget. This year, we’ve set a goal of $10,000 by the end of August for a mid-summer Budget Booster. As you plan your giving, remember our Church Budget and the Budget Booster during these summer months. (Church Treasurer) 9th ANNUAL SLIGO HOMECOMING! Plan to join the church family and Sligo friends on August 4 for Homecoming 2018, the theme of which is “The Promise of Community: All Are Gifted, All Are Valued.” Worship with us on Sabbath morning when Dr. Bill Miller, President of the Potomac Conference, shares a message on the theme. Enjoy a delicious International Potluck luncheon on Sabbath afternoon at Takoma Academy. Join us for Prayer Gathering on Wednesday, July 25, as Pastor Tapp continues his presentations on The Standards of Jesus: Reflections on the Sermon on the Mount. Come and receive deeper understanding of Christ’s greatest discourse and what it means for us as believers today. Prayer Gathering meets each Wednesday. Sligo YA Social: Join Sligo’s Young Adults this evening at SkyZone ‘After Dark’ (15813 Gaither Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20877). We’ll leave Sligo Church at 8:00 p.m., otherwise meet us there at 8:30 p.m. Cost is $25.00, plus sales tax.
