Welcome to Sligo. In our worship services today, we highlight two responses to Jesus’ question, “What do you want me to do for you? Jesus asked that question of two of his disciples and of Bartimaeus on His way to His death in Jerusalem. In the reply given by the two disciples, they demonstrated that they wanted Jesus to assist them in achieving their ambitions and in fulfilling their dreams, while Bartimaeus merely asked for mercy. God’s help is a desirable commodity but His mercy is the blessing that is most needed and most precious. We need God’s mercy, as it brings us in line with His plan and His purpose for our lives. Jesus will not ignore anyone who cries to him for mercy, because that was the purpose for which he came. - Don McFarlane

sabbath devotional
Are we under the guilt of sin? There is a promise, “The Lord merciful and gracious” (Exodus 24:6), where God as it were puts on His glorious embroidery, and holds out the golden scepter, to encourage poor trembling sinners to come to Him. “The Lord, merciful.” God is more willing to pardon than to punish. Mercy does more multiply in Him than sin in us. Mercy is His nature… He shows mercy, not because we deserve mercy, but because He delights in mercy.
“Religion without mercy is empty and dead and is not from God. Nobody who excludes mercy from their life can claim that they are following Jesus. To be or not to be merciful is no insignificant matter.”
- Thomas Watson
