Welcome to Sligo today. Several years ago, I read a book titled, Whatever Became of Sin, by psychologist Karl Menninger. In the opening paragraph of this book, Menninger tells the story of man who stood on a busy street corner in Chicago in the summer of 1972. At first, not doing much of anything, the man suddenly and without warning began to point at individuals as they walked by while shouting, “Guilty!” A few minutes would pass before he repeated the same scenario. “Guilty,” he cried as he pointed at his unsuspecting victims. This went on for quite sometime, until finally one passerby who was a victim of this man’s rants turned to someone and asked, “But how did he know?” Although the man’s actions that day may have been out of the ordinary, one thing is clear. He was absolutely right. Each one of us, regardless of our station in life, is guilty, as “All have sinned and fallen short…” Although the word sin may be fading from our culture’s vocabulary today, it is alive and well within our community. And how we handle sin when it impacts our community says a great deal about how much we value community. - Charles A. Tapp

CHURCH BUILDING IMPROVEMENT:

• The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

Responsive Scripture Reading Beth Wear Genesis 4:1-9 (NKJV) Leader: Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” Congregation: Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. Leader: And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Congregation: Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, Leader: but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. Congregation: So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? Leader: If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

We are sad to announce the passing of Joyce McFarlane. Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, here at Sligo Church.

sabbath devotional

“None can hate [sin] but those that love the law of God; for all hatred comes from love. A natural man may be angry with his sin, but hate it he cannot; nay, he may leave it, but not loathe it; if he did, he would loathe all sin as well as any one sin.” - Abraham Wright
