Summary of our Beliefs • The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

Welcome to Sligo today. Have you ever wondered why in the world of sports, athletes, regardless of their sport of choice, have adopted as a part of their postgame celebratory routine, without prompting or provocation, the practice of looking into the camera and taking time to say, “hi mom”? This postgame response has become so popular that you could even say that it has become a sporting ritual. This cultural phenomenon is not limited to athletes, it has become the response of just about anyone who is given the opportunity to be on camera, regardless of the reason. But why do these athletes and nonathletes alike take this made for TV moment to pause to acknowledge their moms and not their dads? What is there about the dynamic of this mother child relationship that emotes such positive public displays of affection? I believe our nation’s 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, summed it up best when he said, “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my “angel mother.” - Charles A. Tapp

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

sabbath devotional

“When Eve was brought unto Adam, he became filled with the Holy Spirit, and gave her the most sanctified, the most glorious of appellations. He called her Eve, that is to say, the Mother of All. He did not style her wife, but simply mother, mother of all living creatures. In this consists the glory and the most precious ornament of woman.”

– Martin Luther

Sligo Church has had a tradition of periodically having a yearbook done. The last one was done in 2012/2013. In years to come these will prove to be important keepsakes for our present and future members. LifeTouch has undertaken the task of creating a yearbook for us for 2018 and has scheduled the following dates for photographs to be taken: May 13 & 14. Sign up for an appointment at <http://sligochurch.org/> You can also sign up in the Atrium. Atrium sign-ups are not confirmed until you have been notified by LifeTouch. Refugee Info Fair & Film Screening: The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and Sligo Church invite you to a free event on Sunday, May 20 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Sligo Church. Meet local organizations serving refugees, join Takoma Park’s mayor for a discussion on the refugee crisis, and watch an eye-opening film about refugees. Refreshments will be served. For more information, visit <http://tiny.cc/ADRAsligo> The next Sligo Fellowship Potluck will be held on May 19. Guests are invited to join us, following the second service in the Fellowship Room. Members who wish to attend are requested to provide a vegetarian entrée, salad or dessert that will serve at least 10-12 people. Youth Social - DC Zoo Trip: Join us for a trip to explore God’s creation together this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Sign up in the Youth Room. Transportation will be provided.
