Welcome to Sligo today. This week while riding in my car, I did what I usually do. I listened to the radio. As you can probably imagine, there aren’t many stations that I May 13, Saturday feel comfortable tuning into. But on this particular day, I Young Adults GLOW, Memorial Chapel, 9:30 a.m. happened to be listening to our very own WGTS 91.9 FM. Children’s Church, Memorial Chapel, 11:00 a.m. The on-air host at the time was sharing with the listening audience the history behind why we celebrate Mother’s May 15, Monday Day, which I found to be so intriguing that I later did some research Regeneration Ministries, Office Conference Room, 7:30 p.m. of my own. In my research I learned that the first official celebration of Mother’s Day in the United States in 1908 was spearheaded by a May 16, Tuesday woman whose name was Anna Reeves Jarvis. Originally, Mother’s Day Eating You Alive Film Screening, Youth Room, 7:00 p.m. was established to help mourning women remember fallen soldiers and work for peace. But when the holiday became too commercialized, May 17, Wednesday Jarvis, its greatest supporter, fought it with everything she had. Today, Mother’s Day is a time when motherhood is celebrated and those who Prayer Gathering, Sanctuary, 7:00 p.m. happen to be mothers are honored. In today’s message we will look at (or by phone: 949.229.4400 Pin:4997774#, 7:35 p.m.) two women who although from vastly different backgrounds, epitomize Sanctuary Choir Rehearsal, Choir Room, 8:00 p.m. the essence of motherhood - sacrifice. - Charles A. Tapp
