Is Psoriasis linked to stress and your gut health?
By Steve Collins Co-Founder of My Way Up, exercise physiologist and nutritionist.
PSORIASIS IS A COMMON, LONGTERM SKIN DISEASE RESULTING IN SCALY RED, ITCHY PATCHES, TYPICALLY ON THE SCALP, KNEES, ELBOWS AND TORSO. IT OCCURS WHEN SKIN CELLS ARE REPLACED MORE QUICKLY THAN USUAL. IT CAN COME AND GO, FLARING UP OR SUBSIDING FOR A WHILE. THE CAUSE OF PSORIASIS ISN'T AN EXACT SCIENCE, BUT RESEARCH POINTS TO THE LINK BETWEEN GUT HEALTH, AND SKIN HEALTH - KNOWN AS THE GUT-SKIN AXIS.
UP TO 80 PERCENT OF PSORIASIS AND ECZEMA SUFFERERS REPORTED EMOTIONAL STRESS PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF THEIR SKIN SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS.
WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is anything that causes a physical change in your body. Because human brains, and societies are so advanced, stress can not only be caused physically, it can also be caused via emotions.
Some stress is good: like a workout, or a scary movie. But many stresses are bad, and result in negative changes in your body. This is called “distress,” and the gut feels “distressed” very easily.
Distress reduces the body’s ability to function properly. It can becaused by being overworked, trauma, life-changing circumstances out of your control or running yourself ragged, which makes you more susceptible to sickness, disease or immune problems.
Autoimmune disease is the leading cause of skin conditions like Psoriasis, and treating it, begins in the gut. Reducing your stress levels, and making dietary changes are both important ways to boost your immune, skin, and gut health: but where to begin and what changes work best?

5 Healthy Habits to Support Your Mental Health
By Kylianne Farrell
BEING ABLE TO GENERATE AND BOOST POSITIVE EMOTIONS IS A WAY THAT WE CAN INCREASE OUR MENTAL WELLBEING, POSITIVE EMOTIONS UPLIFT AND BUILD US UP, TO BE OUR BEST SELVES MORE OFTEN AND ABLE TO BUFFER AGAINST THE CHALLENGES THAT LIFE THROWS OUR WAY. HERE ARE FIVE WAYS YOU CAN LEVERAGE THOSE POSITIVE EMOTIONS TO SUPPORT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH!
LIVE IN ALIGNMENT WITH YOUR VALUES Values can be described as our personal principals, whether we are aware or not, we all live by a set of values that influence our decisions and behaviours. If we can identify our top values and make a conscious choice to live in more alignment with them, we can generate more positive emotions that boost mental well-being.
GET MOVING Movement creates a ripple effect of change in the body that can cross the blood brain barrier to boost mood. Find movement that you connect with, find meaning in, the benefits will be reaped from consistent investment in moving your body, you may as well enjoy it. No amount of movement is too small, find ways to increase your activity in your day, hike a new trail, walk the kids to school, get out on the water for a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) on a Red Paddle Co inflatable paddleboard. BENEFIT FINDING We have more neurons in our brain dedicated to seeking out the negatives. As humans we live with a negative bias, that ensures survival. Making benefit finding a practice when faced with challenges allows us to build mental resilience! Looking for the benefits in a negative situation when faced with adversity helps us develop a more balanced and perspective on life.
GET GRATEFUL Gratitude is a powerful positive emotion. There are many ways you could make this a healthy habit. You could gaze at photos of that outdoors adventure and find something that day that really left you feeling grateful, you could express gratitude to someone in your life or you could use the old favourite of writing down three things that you are grateful for in a journal. Get creative and find what works best. MINDFULNESS Mindfulness is a way of being present building the habit of the ability to deliberately switch our attention. Living mindfully is particularly powerful when it comes to emotional regulation and awareness. When we are aware and are able to regulate our emotions better and work on ways to savour the positive emotions. Mindfulness doesn't need to be seated in a quiet room either, although that is a great option too, explore other ways of mindfulness, we love combining it with movement like SUP or a walk through the forest.
