MARIN HEADLANDS
Squishy, mile-high cables form subtle, slightly asymmetrical waves around the body of this delightfully cozy winter hat. Written for three height/brim options, Marin Headlands lets you choose your own adventure: a deep, luxurious double-brimmed slouch (with or without an oversized pom-pom), a single-brimmed, just-barely slouchy version, or a more fitted, unisex beanie. Cables cascade directly out of a 2x2 ribbed brim with an optional tubular cast on for a polished finished look. A round, multi-ply heavy worsted or aran weight yarn (like the Barrett Wool Co. HOME and YOTH Father I used for these samples) makes these cables really pop off the background stitches, giving them height, dimensionality, and that tangible smooshiness we love in a textured knit for these deep winter days. This one works in a huge range of colors, but solid or semisolid colorways let the cables take center stage. Quick to work and satisfying engaging to knit, Marin Headlands makes an excellent gift hat for a lucky loved one, or, with that perfect skein of yarn you’ve been saving, for yourself!

One size (Adult S/M/L) with beanie and slouch options; circumference 20” / 50 cm; height 12” / 30 cm (slouch with brim unfolded) or 8.25” / 20 cm (beanie). Note: because these cables derive from 2x2 ribbing, the hat is incredibly stretchy, making this a “one size fits most” scenario.

HAT PATTERN BRIM If using optional tubular cast on, proceed as follows: Foundation rows: Using waste yarn, and smallest needle, CO
sts.
Row 1: using working yarn, *k1, YO, rep from * to last st, k1 [ sts increased; sts on needle]. Row 2: *sl1wyif, k1, rep from * to last st, sl1wyif. Row 3: *k1, sl1wyif, rep from * to last st, k1. Row 4: rep row 2. Row 5: rep row 3. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Slip justworked st to left-hand needle. Next rnd: k2tog, k1, *p2, k2, rep from * to last two sts, rearranging sts for k2, p2 ribbing as you go, p2 st decreased; sts on needle]. Switch to second-smallest needle. If you are not using the optional tubular cast on, CO sts using long-tail or other stretchy CO method with smaller needle. Join in the rnd, being careful not to twist. Both methods continue here: Ribbing rnd: *k2, p2, rep from * to end of rnd. For double-brimmed slouch, work ribbing rnd until piece measures 5” / 12.5 cm from CO edge. For a single-brimmed slouch, work to 2” / 5 cm from CO edge before proceeding. For beanie, work to 1.75” / 4.5 cm from CO edge. If you used the optional tubular cast on, remove your waste yarn (note that this is not like a provisional CO; removing the waste yarn will not leave live loops, but will leave a clean tubular edge).
HAT BODY Switch to largest needle. Ribbing rnd: *k2, p2, rep from * to end of rnd. Rep this rnd more time.

Work rib and cable pattern according to charted or written instructions, as desired, working repeats of stitch pattern around circumference of hat. (Note: charted and written instructions for stitch pattern are found at end of pattern.) Ribbing rnd: *k2, p2, rep from * to end of rnd. For double-brim slouch, work ribbing rnd more times, or until piece measures approximately 11” / 27.5 cm from CO edge, with brim unfolded. For a single-brim slouch, work ribbing rnd more times, or until piece measures approximately 8” / 20 cm from CO edge. For beanie, work ribbing rnd more time, or until piece measures 7.5” / 19 cm from CO edge.
CROWN SHAPING Rnd 1: Rnd 2: Rnd 3: Rnd 4: Rnd 5: Break yarn, leaving a 6 - 8” / 15 - 20 cm tail. Weave tail through remaining sts and pull closed.
FINISHING Use tail from cast on to seam ends of foundation rows together if you used the tubular cast on (below where you joined in the round). Weave in ends and wet block gently, preferably over a round object like a balloon, a wire frame, or a bowl. Using a pom-pom maker, make optional pom-pom using remaining yarn (or contrasting yarn) and secure to hat.
