Just in time for those last gasps of summer — or the perpetually warm Septembers we seem to be so prone to here in the Bay Area — comes this airy confection of a knitted tee, filled with soothing stockinette and just enough of a cable detail to keep things interesting. The body pieces are knit sideways and seamed together before the short sleeves are picked up from the armholes and knit down, a construction that’s both straightforward and just a bit adventurous, and facilitates a flattering placement of the cable motif. As is often the case, yarn choice is the key variable here: knit it in an airy light fingering weight like Quince and Co.’s Piper for a drapey, delicate top, or use a heavier, more structured yarn like Quince’s Tern, YOTH’s Best Friend, Sincere Sheep’s Cormo Fingering for something with a little more substance. Simple rolled hems and neckline make for easy finishing, while the short sleeves and simple construction make this project quick to knit before the temperatures cool.

YARN

k: Knit.

850 (950, 1025, 1100, 1200, 1275) (1375, 1450, 1550, 1625, 1700) yards / 775 (875, 950, 1000, 1100, 1175) (1250, 1325, 1425, 1500, 1550) meters of heavy lace to light sport weight yarn. Sample knit in Quince and Co. Piper (50% U.S. merino, 50% Mohair; 305 yards / 279 meters per 50 grams), 3 (4, 4, 4, 4, 5) (5, 5, 6, 6, 6) skeins; other suggested yarns include Quince and Co. Tern, YOTH Best Friend and Little Brother, and Sincere Sheep Cormo Fingering. Substitution notes: this pattern works best with a wool blend yarn, preferably with the wool blended with a drapier fiber, like silk, mohair, or cashmere. For a lighter weight sweater, choose something on the lighter end of the spectrum, achieving an airier version of the same gauge, but for something a bit denser, a rounder yarn at a closer to sport-weight gauge should work well.

GAUGE

24 sts / 36 rows over 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch on larger needle, after blocking.

NEEDLES

kfb: Knit front and back. Knit into the front and then the back loop of the next st on left needle, then remove both sts from needle. [1 st increased.] k2tog: Knit next two sts together. [1 st decreased.] m: Marker. M1L: With left needle, pick up bar between just-worked st and next st, moving from front to back. Knit into back leg of new st. [1 st increased.] M1P: With left needle, pick up bar between just-worked st and next st, moving from back to front. Purl into front leg of new st. [1 st increased.] M1R: With left needle, pick up bar between just-worked st and next st, moving from back to front. Knit into front leg of new st. [1 st increased.] p: Purl. P2tog: Purl the next two sts together. [1 st decreased.] pm: Place marker.

32” / 80 cm or longer circular needle in size US 3 / 3.25 mm or size needed to obtain gauge. Note: circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts on the body, but you will need a long circular needle (for magic loop) or double-pointed needles for the sleeves. Per knitter preference, you may choose to use a needle one or two sizes smaller than gauge needle to pick up stitches for the sleeves.

RS: Right side.

NOTIONS

Work as set: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts.

ssk: Slip, Slip, Knit. Slip next two sts, one at a time, as if to knit; return both sts to left needle; k both through the back loops. [1 st decreased.] st: Stitch. WS: Wrong side.
