t

doesn’t get much more home grown than this. Throw in some off the farm produce with some on the grill tri-tip, add in local artists and musicians then cultivate with a healthy dose of locals and the energy of the college crowd and you’ve got a typical Thursday night in SLO. The weekly Farmers Market has been a staple in the community for nearly 30 years and is only getting bigger and better. A large swath of locally grown fruits and vegetables will help you keep to your New Year’s resolution, the block of barbecue will make your mouth water and the energy of the crowd, accompanied by the wafting music, will make you dance as you move down the street. Yep, just another SLO town Thursday night. Mingle with local farmers, chefs, vendors and locals every Thursday night in downtown San Luis Obispo, where the city meets the farm.

every thursday of the year higuera street between osos n nipomo streets 6-9 p.m. see u there

Every Thursday night SLO’s main street transforms into a weekly festival of farm-fresh produce, local treats, artisan sweets, downhome barbecues, handmade crafts, engaging entertainers and more. Six blocks of Higuera Street, SLO’s main drag, are closed off for this world-renowned extravaganza. Like clockwork, merchants and vendors roll out their tables, booths and oversized barbecue pits on wheels, prepare their produce, products and tri-tip sandwiches, and wait for the whistle signaling the start of the faire. For three hours, from 6 to 9 p.m., you’ll find locals and visitors getting their weeks’ worth of fresh produce, eating a meal that was flame-kissed just moments earlier and enjoying some family-friendly entertainment all in one spot. If you miss Thursday night’s activities, don’t fret, there are still six more days loaded with farmers’ market opportunities.

Save your appetite, the market is a great place to grab dinner – just plan on bringing cash, and dining street-side.

SLO County is known for its access to locally grown foods and we back up that reputation with daily markets operating in communities throughout the county. In SLO alone there are three throughout the week, not counting the Thursday night granddaddy of them all. Although they may not all be the extravaganza witnessed Thursday night you will find that each has something special to offer and each comes with a personality all its own. Avila and Morro Bay offer seafood in abundance. Whether you’re looking for it fresh off the

boat or hot off the grill, it’s available on the water front. Templeton is known as the chef’s market. This is where locals sneak a peek at what their favorite chefs are picking up and get a preview of the menu for the week ahead. The SLO weekend markets are a great place to chat up the farmers and find out directly from the growers themselves what the best cooking tips are for the seasonal produce. So no matter what day you arrive, you are guaranteed to find the freshest foods at one of our many markets or restaurants.

creek lazily winds its way through town, flowing past the beauty of the nearby peaks and it quickly becomes understood why this location is sought after. It was 240 years ago that Father Junipero Serra Stories! chose San Luis Obispo to found the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the fifth such mission built in California. The bells still ring, children play in the popular Mission Plaza fountain and people come from around the world to walk the path of history in San Luis Obispo. From the native Chumash people and Anglo pioneers to Chinese laborers and Victorian merchants, a diverse and distinct history has shaped the city’s dynamic into what it is today. Use the following map to experience the deep historic character of San Luis Obispo from the steps of the old Mission to SLO’s Art Deco movie palace and on to remarkable homes that to this day help San Luis Obispo celebrate its past. 1. Mission Plaza, 1968 – A gathering spot

for the community as well as many community events and festivals year-round. Through a nearby footbridge, the plaza adjoins to the creekwalk and provides access to shops on Higuera Street.

2. Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, 1772

Memories in the Making

Considered by many to be the most beautiful in the mission series, this mission was the fifth built of the 21 California missions. Today the mission is still an active Catholic church. 3. San Luis Creek – The mission’s earliest source of water, San Luis Creek can be found in many spots throughout town including at Mission Plaza as well as along the creekwalk in downtown. 4. Judge Walter Murray Adobe, 1849 – At one end of Mission Plaza you will find the adobe home of Walter Murray, an Englishman who came to California with Stevenson’s Regiment of New York Volunteers in 1846. Murray printed the first editions of San Luis Obispo’s local newspaper, The Tribune, in this building.

18

5. History Center of SLO County, 1905 – One of the some 3,000 public libraries built worldwide by steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie, this building became the County Historical Museum in 1956. 6. The Creamery, 1906 – SLO County once was the largest dairy industry in the United States, this full-service creamery did not close until 1974. It now houses art galleries, shops and restaurants. 7. Jack House, 1875 –Pioneering rancher and banker Robert Edgar Jack built this home, which has been preserved as a museum of Victorian life circa 1880. 8. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1867 – One of the first Episcopal churches in California, St. Stephen’s houses a pipe organ donated by Phoebe Apperson Hearst.

9. Myron Angel Home, 1883 – This red Victorian was the home of Myron Angel, one of the driving forces behind the establishment of Cal Poly. A publisher of The Tribune in the 1880s, Angel wrote a history of SLO County, published in 1883. 10. Historic Railroad District, 1894 – The Southern Pacific Railroad route connected LA to SF and brought the city into the industrial age. The district is now a busy neighborhood which includes the train station, railroad museum and many restaurants. 11. Dallidet Adobe, 1853 – Pierre Hyppolite Dallidet, who established the first commercial vineyard on the Central Coast, built this home. The adobe contains many original furnishings and is surrounded by gardens. 12. Ramona Depot, 1889 – The Southern Pacific Railroad Company built the depot to serve the luxurious Ramona Hotel. The elegant Victorian burned to the ground in 1905, leaving only the depot, which now shelters the horse-drawn carriage that carried passengers between the hotel and the train station. 13. Kundert Medical Building, 1956 – This is the only building in San Luis Obispo designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. 14. Fremont Theater, 1940 – SLO’s Art Deco movie palace is fully restored, with all of its original features. Its ceiling is entirely painted with sea nymphs on horseback and its marquee is a neon showpiece at night. 15. Andrews Bank Building, 1893 – The bank was built by J.P. Andrews. Andrews donated the land across the street to the county for the site of its courthouse. 16. Fremont Marker, 1846 – A granite column on the corner of Osos and Mill streets marks a spot where the great western explorer John C. Fremont camped overnight. 17. Site of Casa Grande, 1851 – Built by Captain William Dana, this adobe was used as a hotel, saloon, store and courthouse. When the county failed to pay its rent on the courthouse, a lengthy lawsuit ensued; Dana was the county treasurer and so paid himself the amount due. 18. Sinsheimer Bros. Store, 1874 – The only SLO County building with a cast-iron façade, the façade was cast in San Francisco and transported down the coast by ship. 19. Sauer Adobes, 1860 – The pair of adobes across Chorro Street from the mission includes the two-story Monterey-style Sauer-Adams adobe. It was originally a one-story structure similar to its smaller companion. 20. Ah Louis Store, 1884 – Chinese immigrant merchant Ah Louis built this structure of bricks that he made himself. The store, which anchored SLO’s Chinatown, served as a bank, post office

15 and general merchandise store for the more than 2,000 Chinese laborers who came here to build the railroad. 21. Garden Street Inn, 1887 – The Italianate Queen Anne home built by German immigrants Morris and Helena Goldtree changed hands twice before being configured into eight apartments in 1923. In 1990 it opened as a bed-and-breakfast inn. 22. Presbyterian Church, 1905 – This church is built entirely of gray granite quarried from Bishop Peak, the second in the range of volcanic peaks that lead from San Luis Obispo to the Pacific Ocean.

Fashion your own style

Discover your next great find in one of our many chic shops or boutiques keepsake acquired during a trip can often help you recall all of those wonderful memories created every time you look at the souvenir, no matter how big or how small the keepsake might be. Saunter from kitschy local boutiques to the familiar shops as you make your way through our historic downtown. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or putting on an Oscar winning performance convincing your friend you’re shopping for them, there is no better place to find that memory-making merchandise then in SLO.

Downtown

One of the reasons San Luis Obispo is so happy is because of its walkability and friendliness to pedestrians. Downtown San Luis Obispo encompasses about seven blocks and five streets filled with retail and dining tucked into historic buildings. Take a stroll down Higuera Street, the main drag for shopping. But don’t forget about the streets of Monterey and Marsh and all the cross streets in between. You will find that downtown is filled with off-beat boutiques and familiar chain retailers that provide a mixture of affordable and lavish shopping options. Along with the shopping you will discover that downtown is also the dining and entertainment hub of town.

some, diving in, getting their hands dirty and creating their own art is the only way to go. For others however, it’s best to leave the handcrafting to someone more of the artistic persuasion and just consider their creation your personal find. of the weekend and what to do with the family? Wishing you could return to simpler times and thinking back about those activities you did on vacation as a child? The rocks down at the creek definitely deserved their due diligence. They’re not going to skip themselves. Maybe even switch it up and go with chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream. Share that childish enthusiasm with a family-friendly escape in SLO. Whether it’s fishing, the zoo, the waterpark, the beach or the children’s museum, San Luis Obispo has so many ways to create memories with your kids both classic and modern. year the nation’s best and brightest congregate on campuses in San Luis Obispo and are guided toward their future. For the past 19 years, California Polytechnic State University has been rated the best public-master’s university in the West by U.S. News & World Report. Cuesta College (the local community college) offers 64 degree programs and 119 certificate programs. The small-town feel of SLO offers what so many students desire when away at school, that home away from home atmosphere. Pair SLO’s wealth of outdoor activities with its abundance of sun-filled days and the true test becomes how to focus on the books. California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is world-renowned for its distinctive learn-by-doing approach to education. Long respected for its agricultural programs, it now has the largest schools of engineering and architecture in the West. Approximately 18,000 students study in its 60-plus undergraduate and 20-plus graduate degree programs. The Performing Arts Center on campus hosts theatrical and musical productions by local, regional and touring performers. Guided walking tours of the campus are offered as well as suggestions for self-guided tours are online; call the campus tour hotline at 756-5734 for information. Enter the Cal Poly campus via Grand Avenue, north of downtown. 756-1111; calpoly.edu.

an average of 300 days of sunshine a year combined with a moderate Mediterranean climate locals tend to spend a good amount of time outdoors. The rolling hills, sun-kissed beaches and 30 miles of hiking trails in SLO alone, one starts to feel bad for wasting any day indoors. The waves at Pismo Beach are 10 miles one way, the fish at Santa Margarita Lake are 20 miles the other way. Kayaks in Morro Bay are equally as close and Montaña de Oro State Park is just down the street from there. County Faire

Explore the bounty of what the county has to offer

hen

it all comes down to it, San Luis Obispo County’s landscape is as diverse as it is breathtaking. From its green hills, majestic ancient oaks and row upon row of vines stretching into the distance to the ragged cliffs, sun baked beaches and hidden coves, you could spend years and still find new things to discover. That’s some great appeal and that’s why we love the SLO life. Located in the heart of it all, San Luis Obispo is the perfect jumping off point and here are some tastes to whet your pallet as you decide where you want to go today. San Simeon The home of Hearst Castle, ginormous elephant seals, ragged cliffs jutting out into the ocean and the lighthouse namesake of the 1959 movie The Monster of Piedras Blancas. There is no-better ending point for a SLO coastal tour. Cambria The village of Cambria is chock-a-block with artist studios, antiques, locally made crafts and a growing number of winery tasting rooms. Round that off with a house made completely of rubbish and it’s a good day trip destination.

Visit!

40

Harmony With a population of 18, Harmony can’t even register as a Hamlet. Harmony is home to a pottery shop, a glass works studio and, being located in SLO County, a winery which when the tasting room is full exceeds the population of the town. Cayucos If ever there was a place to wax up the long board, strap it to the top of a woodie wagon and cruise over for a weekend at the beach, Cayucos would be it. This small beach town looks as if it was plucked from the 1950s and strategically placed on a stretch of the Central Coast’s finest real estate. Morro Bay Morro Bay comes complete with a fisherman’s wharf and in turn one of the best fresh fish markets in the county, deep sea fishing tours, kayak rentals, antique shops, bayside dinning and one very large namesake rock alerting everyone that they have arrived in one of California’s most iconic locations. Los Osos / Montaña de Oro Looking for outdoors? Los Osos is home to the Elfin Forest, a 90-acre natural area for hiking, and is the gateway to Montaña de Oro State Park which offers camping, hiking, mountain biking, surfing, beaches, beautiful vistas as well as equestrian trails and campsites. Avila Beach The small town of Avila Beach is tucked out of the way and is often referred to as the local’s beach. This is in no way a reflection of what it has to offer. With miles of beach, boutique shopping, gourmet restaurants and a beautifully restored lighthouse the only thing Avila lacks is the crowd. Pismo Beach / Shell Beach These two beach cities are the quintessential classic California beach towns. Full of kitschy local shops, a range of eateries, some of the most popular surf spots in the county as well as one huge Fourth of July party, it’s amazing what fun you can have on this stretch of coastline. Arroyo Grande Be sure to make the village of Arroyo Grande one of your destination stops. This charming downtown is filled with boutique shops, local restaurants, parks and chickens which mosey around the streets. Oceano / Grover Beach The finest and most extensive coastal sand dunes in California provide an impressive playground for off-highway enthusiasts as well as surfers, campers, surf anglers and campers. County Faire Continued From Previous page

Nipomo This rural community on the southernmost edge of San Luis Obispo County offers all the fun of rural life with horseback riding through beautiful eucalyptus groves, hiking through peaceful dunes and one of the most popular barbeque joints in the area. On top of that it is home to lush world-class golf courses. San Miguel Anchored by the late 1700’s San Miguel Arcangel mission on its southern border, the rural town of San Miguel is not as sleepy as it may appear. Among the many cattle ranches in the surrounding area numerous wineries have started populating the rolling hillsides. Paso Robles This is wine country. With more than 180 wineries ranging from the big global players to the boutique cellars pouring in tasting rooms or one of the signature wine festivals, this is what you came here for. That is unless you came for the California Mid-State Fair, world-class bicycle rally, massive equestrian events or the plethora of other events. Templeton One of the biggest farmers markets in the county belongs to the rustic town of Templeton. And why not, this rich agricultural land is loaded with grain, almond, cherry and apple farms not to mention ranches, prestigious horse shows and, being located in North County, local wines. Atascadero Visit over 100 animals in San Luis Obispo County’s only zoo and take a paddle boat out on Atascadero Lake all in one stop. Play a round of disk golf on your way to the links or head over for some wine tasting as well as some of the county’s best south of the border cuisine all in the heart of Atascadero.

Santa Margarita Stoplights? There isn’t even a stop sign slowing your cruise through this town. Santa Margarita may look like a one horse town but between the beer and wine tasting, the lake just up the road and the ziplining, these cowboys have a lot to offer. Edna Valley The heart of San Luis Obispo wine country sits here in quaint Edna Valley. Surrounded by coastal hills and blanketed with miles of vineyards with tasting rooms hidden down dirt roads this is where your wine country tour begins, just five miles from downtown SLO. For suggested driving tours check out visitslo.com or scan this QR code.

Hearst Castle A legend in its own

For publishing baron William Randolph Hearst, happiness was a sprawling castle atop a hill overlooking extensive ranchlands and the rugged coast north of San Luis Obispo. Hearst Castle was a place “where Hollywood stars and the San Francisco elite were brought together by perhaps the only man colossal enough to stand astride both worlds,” according to Sunset magazine. It was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, built over 28 years and filled with Hearst’s prodigious collection of art and antiques from around the world. At once elegant and outlandish, the 250,000acre estate consists of four homes, 165 rooms, 127 acres of gardens, 41 fireplaces, two pools and even a private zoo.

hile

William Randolph Hearst was creating a publishing powerhouse in San Francisco, competing with Joseph Pulitzer in the highly competitive newspaper business in New York and jet setting (ok, maybe prop plane setting) around the world, he chose SLO County to build his dream home. There is a reason it’s not called Hearst Cottage. This castle is located on the opposite side of the spectrum from quaint summer homes. It comes fully loaded with golden swimming pools, guest houses and gardens over– looking extensive ranchlands and a rugged coastline. You can count the resident zebras as bonus black and white striped memories. 44

Wow!

At La Encantada (the Enchanted Hill), as he called it, Hearst entertained the celebrities of his era. Politicians, journalists, movie stars and European royalty frolicked in the pools, dined in the tapestry-hung dining room, played at lavish costume parties and watched films in the Castle’s theater. Today, Hearst Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in California. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument includes a large visitor center with an exhibit about the Hearsts, a National Geographic movie theater with a five-story screen, a gift shop and food service. You can choose from five guided tours of the castle all rated by the number of steps included, or take a self-guided tour through the gardens; reservations are strongly recommended. Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument is 43 miles north of San Luis Obispo via Highway 1. Open daily except New Year’s, Thanksgiving and Christmas day. Tours leave at regular intervals from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., later in summer. Spring and fall also feature an evening tour that allows guests to experience the castle as one of Hearst’s guests would have. During the winter holidays, the castle and its docents are decked out for the occasion.

From Vines to Wines

Sip in the good life and taste the best wines of the Central Coast

The San Luis Obispo Wine Region

produces award-winning wines that are known around the globe for quality, craftsmanship and distinctiveness. Wine lovers recognize this area, as well as the nearby Paso Robles Wine Region, as ideal for producing superior Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah and Rhône varietals. More than 30 wineries and tasting rooms are near SLO. The area’s advantageous microclimate makes it perfect for cultivating grapes and producing wine. Some varietals demand the cooler air of the San Luis Obispo Wine Region, while others need the warmer daytime feel of Paso Robles. Take a day, weekend or even longer while you’re visiting to taste the distinction, and then bring a bottle (or more) of happiness home as the perfect souvenir.

wirl,

sniff, sip and savor. On the really warm days in SLO, when the mercury breaks into the 80s, sometimes the best workout is to do just that… swirl, sniff, sip and savor. Maybe followed with a little cheese and baguette just to savor all the flavors. Every year more people are discovering what so many have known for decades. The wine offerings from San Luis Obispo County are as exceptional and unique as the Central Coast itself. Visitors are often surprised to see the winemaker pouring and chatting up patrons about everything from the mornings surf break to directions to a tasting room they suggest just down the road. Honestly, we love that it still surprises and intrigues the visitors and that often it is one of their best memories of SLO.
