Bus trip to K-State vs. KU game a success Wildcats Forever started out with a bang for the 2010-2011 school year. As early as mid-September, it became clear membership was going to greatly surpass any previous year’s total. With such rapid growth of the program, Wildcats Forever was able to land another sponsorship from K-State President Kirk H. Schulz to take a bus trip to the K-State vs. KU football game Oct. 14. With the cost of the trip a mere $50 (just a game ticket was $90!), Wildcats Forever members were starting to buzz about getting a seat. However, even SAB did not expect the tremendous response we saw. On Sept. 28, we opened the phone lines to begin taking reservations at 9 a.m., and by 9:22, all 45 spots were filled — including the wait list! The day proved to be worth the wait. Wildcats Forever members left from Bill Synder Family Stadium in a charter bus in the afternoon. Each member was given a goodie bag that included snacks and a T-shirt to wear to the game. The movie “The Blindside” was played on the way to Lawrence, Kan., to get everyone in a football frame of mind.

Wildcats Forever members fill a charter bus headed to Lawrence Oct. 14 for the K-State vs. KU football game.
Once there, Wildcats Forever members enjoyed dinner surrounded by fellow K-Staters at Wayne and Larry’s. There, we watched Powercat GameDay and had a member interviewed about his thoughts on the upcoming game. After dinner, we listened to the K-State Fight Song and did a round of the Wabash Cannonball on the
way to the stadium. The final score was 55-7, with the ’Cats coming out victorious. Overall, the trip was a huge success. Plus, it’s always fun to beat the Jayhawks! Since the trip, our numbers have continued to skyrocket. As of Dec. 1, Wildcats Forever has a record 2,027 members!

New members learn K-State basics in ‘Growl Groups’ Another fall semester is coming to a close and with it, another fantastic semester of new member training sessions! Over the past 12 weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of working with 16 of the brightest, bubbliest, most bodacious K-Staters on our campus. I would like to take this opportunity to share some of their experiences with you. Throughout the training sessions, our new members have heard from a variety of K-State faculty members, including Pat Bosco, Emily Lehning, Amy Button Renz, Larry Moeder and representatives from nine of K-State’s colleges. These folks gave presentations on recruiting tactics, the importance of our K-State brand, academic options, the future of K-State and various forms of financial aid. Our new members also have done a little presenting of their own, in the form of “Growl Groups.” These small-group study projects have given them the opportunity to explore aspects of K-State and Manhattan they might not have been exposed to in the past. Several highlights include the planned East Stadium renovations for the new Welcome Center, improvements for the rec complex, the wide variety of multicultural programs our university offers and the assistance offered by Disability Support Services. One of the biggest changes within the new member training program comes from the addition of a new project. Instead of creating a class video, our new members have been working on “Personality Posters.” These new posters will showcase the individual members of each class, providing information on that person’s interests, campus involvement, majors/minors and other “fun facts.” The purpose behind these posters is twofold. First, they give our new members a chance to learn about each other’s strengths, weaknesses and areas of expertise. Secondly, it will provide a background for students and parents who attend Student Alumni Board events throughout the year. By the time you read this letter, all of our new members will have experienced their first Just For Juniors event. Throughout [2]

the fall semester, they travelled across the state to help put on these informational presentations for high school juniors. It’s great to see them recall information from our training sessions in the middle of conversations with JFJ attendees. In addition, they contributed to their first For Sophomores Only event last spring, and did a great job! As the semester comes to a close, Student Alumni Board will begin focusing on our new member class for the spring of 2011— it’s hard to believe how fast it’s approaching! If you know of any current K-State students who would make good candidates for SAB, please encourage them to apply! Our application will be available online, beginning Tuesday, Jan.18, 2011.

[ FROM THE PRESIDENT ]
By Kelsie Ball, SAB president Once again, SAB is taking over campus and amazing students and faculty with accomplishments they have made in the past few months. In this newsletter, you will get to see into the lives of SAB members and the successes they have experienced. SAB kicked the year off with the annual CASE ASAP Conference in Kansas City in August. Seven members attended: Scott Soptick, Dylan Works, Casey Dwyer, Rachel King, Stephanie Larson, Mindy Highberger, myself and SAB advisers, Andrea Bryant Gladin and Jessica Elmore. We were one of the few schools to present at the conference and spent many hours preparing our presentation. We highlighted SAB’s specific programs, such as Just for Juniors, For Sophomores Only, New Member Training/Selections and Wildcats Forever. The conference was a great experience for us to highlight our organization to schools across the nation and to network. We also had time to squeeze in fun, which included eating at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant, shopping, a trip across town to Smokey Joe’s and experiencing the night life of Kansas City. Next year’s conference is in Nashville, Tenn. This summer and fall I served as a standing director on the K-State Alumni Association Board of Directors. As SAB president, I attend the meetings along with student body president Danny Unruh, and represent the student body on issues related to SAB and the Association. It has been an amazing experience being able to network with alumni and learn about the Association’s programming and initiatives. It has been one of the highlights of my K-State experience. SAB has been busy with Just for Juniors events in Manhattan and Topeka, skybox hosting for the Association at football games, helping with Wildcats Forever events, and providing childcare for alumni before football games. SAB’s dedication and commitment not only to SAB, but to other extracurricular activities never ceases to amaze me. They are leaders on and off campus and are some of the busiest people around. I am honored to lead such a talented group and can’t wait to see what SAB will accomplish next semester!

In an attempt to respond to the request of more SAB quality time, SAB intramurals debuted this fall. With valiant efforts, the SABallers had a strong rookie season with a 3-3 record, making it to the first round playoffs. The team was open for all members, and Reed Pankratz became the unofficial head coach by unanimous vote of the board. A loyal core of eight members made it to most games, but substitutes outside of SAB also were used at times when SABer’s busy schedules wouldn’t allow them to play. This ended up being beneficial for SAB as several spring applicants were picked up throughout the season. Highlights of the season included: a new franchise birth into the playoffs with a 22nd seed ranking, a stagnant defense showing in the second half of every game, only allowing two touchdowns in
the second half all season and creative playmaking designed with all teammates in mind. Coach Pankrtaz gallantly led the SABallers and encouraged the team through strong, motivational quotes, such as: “Yes. Fight and we may not make the playoffs. But run and you will not have a chance to make them. And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that, for one chance to come back here as young men, and tell our enemies SAB members form a football intramural team. that they may take our playoffs, *but they will never take our resumes!*” — Braveheart (SAB gether. Team jerseys are in the works, and Style) the SABallers are looking to continue their Overall, it was agreed that this was a fun success this spring with co-ed intramural way for SAB members to spend some time to- softball.
