Welcome to Our 70th Season! A slate of shows carefully selected to entertain and inspire In 1947, seven plucky actors rented a hall to put on a play in San Luis Obispo. They didn’t know if anyone would come, but when the curtain rose that night, there was an audience. And when the curtain fell, applause filled the hall. Even with that happy ending, no one dreamed that this staging of Blithe Spirit would lead to more than 900 productions staged by the SLO Little Theatre over the past seven decades. You – our generous supporters and dedicated volunteers – have helped make us one of the oldest continuously running non-profit theatres in the country, enabling us to present live performances 46 weeks a year. I am confident that our 70th Anniversary Season will more than fulfill our mission to present professional-quality productions that entertain, challenge and inspire you. Live theatre is powerful, singular in its ability to explore and reinforce the values we share, to strengthen the ties that bind us together, and to enrich our inner lives. It sparks emotions and forges connections – between and among the actors onstage, the mind of the playwright, and, most importantly, with you and your fellow audience members. Enrich your life’s journey. Become a 70th Anniversary Season subscriber today, and don’t miss a moment of the challenge! See you at the Little Theatre,
Kevin Harris Managing Artistic Director

August 19–September 11, 2016 Thu, Fri, Sat @ 7 pm / Sat & Sun @ 2 pm A mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, dubbed “The Man in Chair,” listens to a recording of his favorite musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens he is transported into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is transformed into an impressive Broadway set with seashell footlights, sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes. Winner of 5 Tony Awards, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving sendup of 1920s musicals featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another!

Tuesdays with Morrie is the story of Mitch Albom, an accomplished journalist driven solely by his career, and Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor. Sixteen years after graduation, Mitch happens to catch Morrie’s appearance on a television news program and learns that his old professor is battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Mitch is reunited with Morrie, and what starts as a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a last class in the meaning of life. “A touching, life-affirming, deeply emotional drama with a generous dose of humor.” – NY Daily News

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1988, this unique and imaginative theatre piece is comprised of two actors reading letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. Love Letters is an evocative, touching, frequently funny character study in which what is implied is as revealing and meaningful as what is actually written down.
They are the most unlikely of friends: Archy is a cockroach with the soul of a poet, and Mehitabel is an alley cat with a celebrated past (she claims she was Cleopatra in a previous life.) The whimsical poetry of Don Marquis will be delightfully brought to life by Gale McNeeley in a one-man show full of wit, wisdom and philosophy. Show Sponsor Rhonda O’Dell

Alice Springs in the year 2039. A fish falls from the sky and lands at the feet of Gabriel York. And it still smells of the sea. It’s been raining for days, and Gabriel knows something is wrong. In an intricate, multi-layered story that spans four generations and two continents, When the Rain Stops Falling explores patterns of betrayal, abandonment, destruction, forgiveness and love. This powerful drama unfolds with humanity, surprising humor and hope, as the past plays out into the future. “Bovell…has created a quietly spellbinding puzzle of a universe that is as stealthily thrilling and defiantly mystical as it is catastrophically melancholy.” – Newsday

A remarkable one-man show based on the true chronicles of David Sedaris’s experiences as Crumpet the Elf in Macy’s Santaland. A holiday cult classic, Santaland riffs on a few of Sedaris’s truly odd encounters with his fellow man during the height of the holiday crunch.

Join us for a young performers’ version of Oscar Wilde’s comedy masterpiece! The story revolves around one of the most ingenious, and hilarious, cases of mistaken identity ever put into a play: Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax are both in love with the same mythical suitor. The reliable Jack Worthing has wooed Gwendolen under the name Ernest while the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff has also posed as Ernest to win the heart of Cecily. When all four arrive at Jack’s country home on the same weekend accompanied by the formidable Lady Bracknell, the gallants must grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions. “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” – Oscar Wilde

Winner of the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Our Town follows the small town of Grover’s Corners through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, this is the “must-see” play in the canon of American theatre. Don’t miss this classic American drama written by America’s favorite playwright. “While all of Wilder’s work is intelligent, non-synthetic and often moving, as well as funny, it is Our Town that makes the difference. It is probably the finest play ever written by an American.” – Edward Albee

About Ubu’s Other Shoe Our staged reading series is named after the infamous trilogy of plays written by Alfred Jarry that were banned from the stage after riots erupted on opening night. Ubu’s Other Shoe pays homage to the spirit of Jarry and to all artists who strive to explore the fringes of their art. This exciting series exists to offer actors, directors and audience members an opportunity to experience incredible plays that do not necessarily fit into our regular main stage season. Thank you for taking this journey with us.

Cabaret, 2016

The mission of the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre is to present theatrical productions of professional quality for the entertainment, enrichment and education of the public. Our mission is based on the conviction that live theatre, performed and experienced in the full dimensionality of real time and space, is of inestimable value, reminding us of our shared human values in an increasingly digitized and impersonal world.
