SLOTIN FOLK ART AUCTION
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE
1. ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
2. Buyer pays Slotin Folk Art Auction (“Slotin”) premium of Twenty-five percent (25%) of the Lot’s Hammer price. (As used throughout these “Terms and Conditions,”“Lot”means an object or group of objects offered for sale as one unit and “ hammer Price,”means the price announced by the auctioneer when the hammer falls.) The Buyer’s Premium shall be collected by Slotin directly from the Buyer at the time of sale.
3. Slotin will accept cash, checks and credit cards. (The “Sales Price”is the Hammer Price plus the Buyer’s Premium, plus applicable taxes). Any returned check will result in a return check fee and entitle Slotin to the remedies provided under Georgia law and in paragraph 7, below.
4. Title to Lot and risk of loss or damage to the Lot passes to the Buyer when the Hammer falls (i.e. when Slotin, as agent for seller, accepts the bid). Slotin Auction shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises after the date of sale. The Sales Price must be paid prior to the close of the auction. Buyers with an outstanding balance after 14 days of the close of the auction will be charged a ten percent (10%) late fee on the Sales Price. Buyers must provide a credit card number in order to bid. Buyers with an outstanding balance after 14 days will be charged the outstanding balance, including (10%) late fee and (4%) credit card fee to their credit card. Slotin will have sole and absolute discretion to determine who the successful bidder is and/or may withdraw the Lot or reoffer the Lot for sale, in the event of a dispute.
5. Invoices will include shipping prices for most items. If an item is listed as “Buyer Responsible for Shipping,” we suggest you contact one of the shippers we have listed or we are happy to work with anyone you would prefer. You may pick up the items after the auction by appointment. Just email if you would like us to remove the shipping charges.
6. ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS.”Slotin, for itself and as agent for the seller, makes no warranties or representations of any kind with respect to any Lot. Buyer agrees that in no event shall Slotin be responsible for the correctness, description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, value or condition of any Lot. Nothing being said or done by Slotin shall be deemed a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability by Slotin.
7. If Buyer fails to pay the Sales Price at the close of the auction or otherwise comply with these Terms and Conditions, Slotin shall be entitled to the following remedies: (1) to recover from Buyer any monetary loss arising on any resale of the Lot (including all costs of any resale or attempted resale); (2) any deposit or partial payment paid by Buyer: (3) to recover from Buyer all of its costs and expenses of collection, including attorneys’ fees of fifteen percent (15%) of the outstanding balance, interest on the outstanding balance of 1.5% per month and costs; and (4) all other relief and remedies allowed by the law. Georgia law applies and jurisdiction and venue over all disputes involving these Terms and Conditions shall be in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
8. Bidding on any Lot is acceptance of these Terms and Conditions and any and all other terms announced at the time of sale. These Conditions constitute the entire agreement between bidders and Slotin and supersede all prior agreements between them, if any.
9. Shipping Is Easy! Slotin Folk Art Auction will be glad to pack and ship your auction purchases for you. We ship via UPS Ground. The shipping charges are listed in the catalog for U.S. continental shipments only. A shipping invoice will be mailed along with the auction invoice the week after the auction. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.
INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL AND MAY BE PURCHASED FOR $2 PER $100.
12. Suggest Bid Increments:
$0-$500 - $25 increments. $500-1,000 - $50 increments. $1,000 and above - minimum of $100 increments.
11. Absentee Bidding Instructions: If you cannot attend this auction, but would like to bid on items, the procedure is quite simple:
1. Fill out the form on page 3, listing catalog lot number, description, and your top bid price for each item. The limit you leave should be the amount to which you would bid if you were to attend the sale. Bidding increments are listed above. Please make sure that your bids fall within these increments. At the auction, bids are handled in a competitive manner in an attempt to buy the object for less than your top bid. You will be competing against other absentee, phone and internet bidders. You will pay one bid above the next highest bid, but no more than your maximum. If two absentee bids are received with the exact same amount, the first bid received will take precedence. Slotin Folk Art Auction will always attempt to purchase designated lots for the lowest possible amount in competition with other bidders, but we cannot be held responsible for errors or failure to bid.
12. Live Phone Bidding Instructions: If you would like to be called as the lots you are interested in come up during auction, please complete the form on page 3. Items are sold in the exact order of the catalog around 45 lots an hour. List the lot number, and a brief description. Where it says bid amount or phone number, simply list the phone number you would like us to use during the auction. You may leave a back up number. There is no need to list a bid amount unless you would like the phone operator to bid for you in the event that you can-not be reached. Absentee bidding and Phone bidding is a convenience we offer to our customers and we will make every attempt to reach phone bidders as their lots come up during the auction, but we cannot be held responsible for errors, technical difficulties or failure to bid. Phone bidders may wish to view the auction live on online to check the progress of the sale and to help determine when to expect their phone calls.
13. Bidding Live on the Internet During the Auction: Bidders may place absentee bids or bid in real time along with our audience online. If you are bidding live online the Buyer’s commission is 25%. You may view the auction live for no fee. The process of bidding live on the internet is convenient, but not perfect. Your bids are submitted incrementally from Liveauctioneers to a live person in the auction hall who is executing the bids as they come in on behalf of the internet bidders while she is also typing in the bid history for each lot. She will attempt to capture the bid history as accurately as possible, but in the event of a discrepancy, the auctioneer’s records are the official records of the auction.

The Estate of Frank Bruno
1925-2022
Visionary Apocalyptic Painter and Fierce Social Critic
Slotin Auction is proud to offer these remarkable masterpieces for the first time to the public.
A painter of often large, complex, and brilliantly colored images of the world as seen through a visionary and prophetic lens, he combines hours of historical and biblical research into images with deep messaging. Typically using acrylic paints, his paintings are often unconventionally shaped and created on a number of surfaces including canvas and plywood.
Bruno spent years creating each of his complex paintings and refused to sell them during his lifetime.
Bruno was increasingly concerned by world politics, greed and immorality, His work reflects his belief in the biblical prophesy. Bruno believed it was his duty is to alert people to the approaching evil and destructiona sentiment echoed in the work of many end of the world focused visionaries, like the late Reverend Howard Finster who declared himself, "God's last red light before the Apocalypse."
The American Visionary Art Museum hosted; FRANK BRUNO: A Life Devoted to THE END—a hot hellfire and damnation exhibition featuring 14 masterworks created over the last five decades by visionary true believer Frank Bruno.

The world is portrayed as a pre-WWII carnival midway where the side show performances never lived up to what was displayed on the advertising banners. Russia in 1961 was considered the No. 1 menace facing the world. This painting points to a time when the greatest menace would be the United Nations. Banners proudly proclaim the U.N. as the shining knight on a white horse, bringing justice and peace to the world. The entrance to the United Nations’ stage is a coffin-shaped ticket booth. The stage, shaped like a whale, is Leviathan, the satanic sea monster. Below the transparent stage are unclean spirits beckoning the unwary into a bottomless pit. In the clearing is a Salvation Army couple, symbolic of Born Again believers. Quickly proceeding down the row of stages we have other issues represented:. Unprotected sex, tobacco and alcohol and even atomic war.
From above, God peers down on this lively scene.

Those once lofty high places of government have been abandoned. Descending into the depths of madness, outer garments of propriety envisioned by the Founders were discarded, revealing an ugly, bloated nakedness, a body covered in sores, overflowing with pus and dried blood. Unable to curb a voracious appetite, today’s America has begun devouring itself to satisfy the deadly parasites its body has bred and nurtured.

Anyone who watched the devastating events of January 6th will not doubt Bruno’s Apocalyptic Visions of the future...
"I see danger—awake! It's terrible, it's horrible, and it's almost here! This is why my spirit was sent to earth. This is the job God has given me. This is the job I must do, so my hands will be free of your blood." – Frank Bruno

Anacoana et Bohecio Guarionex
1991. Initialed.
Oil on metal. 65” x 65” including frame. Excellent condition. Exhibited at Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Monterrey, A.C., October 1992-January 1993. Also exhibited at a solo exhibition, Migration of the Spirit, Figge Art Museum, Iowa, 2006. Est. $4,000-8,000. Buyer is responsible for shipping.
Anacoana and her brother were cacique lords of the Haitian Taino tribe. Typical of the Taino, Anacoana and her brother painted themselves in a red paint made from the roucou fruit. Colonizers referred to them as ‘red indians,’ a slur that has endured.
The painting depicts this first meeting where Anacoana and her brother received Christopher Columbus and mistakenly considered him a friend. The betrayal to come is foreshadowed by the hidden colonizers and lances pointing at them. Upon Columbus’ second visit he captured brother and sister and had them burned.

Makandal.
1981. Signed, dated and titled.
Oil on canvas. Excellent condition. 50" w x 74" h with frame.
This painting was based on the popular legend of Makandal, an important figure in the Haitian Independence; he is immortalized on the 20-gourde coin. Makandal was a slave working at a sugarcane plantation. After losing a hand in an accident with one of the industrial machines, his white owners considered killing him, but instead, they freed him. He never forgot the traumas of slavery and began experimenting with herbs and began poisoning white colonists, thus starting an all-out revolution. Makandal’s story convince King Louis XIV of France to employ food testers. Makandal was eventually captured and sentenced to burning. According to legend, the moment the fire started, a wind swept through the plaza and Makandal disappeared, flying away with mosquito wings.
Duval-Carrie is widely recognized as one of the leading artists of the contemporary Haitian diaspora. As a teenager, he fled Haiti to escape the totalitarian regime of Francois Duvalier, ‘Papa Doc’, eventually settling in Miami. His work is known for his innovative adaptations of traditional Haitian iconography which engage with contemporary social and political symbolism. Duval-Carrie compels the viewer to reconsider history through the lens of how Africa has shaped the Americas and the Caribbean.

Note from consignor:
“Preacher Finster was my Pastor at Chelsea Baptist Church in Chelsea Georgia for many years. Early in the 1950’s he was at my parents’ home and saw a head board from the first bed my parents owned. He asked Mom what she was going to do with it and she said, ‘Throw it in the trash’. He told her he would take it home with him and paint something on it. When he brought it back, he had painted “Evening of Time at Hand” on it. It hung over the mantel until 1990 when my father asked me if I wanted it. I brought it to my home and it hung in my husband’s office until now. Many good memories are with this painting.”

As in much of Holley’s works, this sculpture uses cast-off materials to confront and challenge our everyday vision of things. Talking about the piece, the artist mused about the problematic ideas that undergird our larger social world, a world built precariously upon the debris of conflict, injustice, and dehumanizing conceptions of each other. Here, Holley creates a metaphor for the shaky social principles on which we unconsciously construct our lives. Like a visual pun, it is fashioned from discarded building materials—including a tangle of cast-off rebar and a slab of concrete wall that tries to balance itself on the piece's twisted metal form. Suspended from the piece is a large hook of the type used to hoist construction materials, or conversely, to wield the wrecking ball that destroys the old edifices that no longer serve our higher interests and understandings. Mounted on a clump of concrete, the entire construction appears unstable and perilous, much like the foundational beliefs that fail to support the architecture of our true humanity. It asks us to question the real underlying structure of our beliefs and practices by showing us what remains when the outer walls and the surface of things fall away.

Richard C. Smith (1950) is the third of four children born to a family of modest means in a large suburb of London. He had trouble at school, probably due to learning disabilities, but he loved his drawing classes. He left school at fifteen to work. While still in adolescence, a motorcycle accident incited him to take drugs. Lacking any professional qualifications and rapidly acquiring a polyaddiction to hard drugs, his life took a chaotic turn. He has carried out a series of physically demanding jobs, including that of gravedigger, and endured several stays in jail.
Yet when circumstances allow, Richard C. Smith draws and paints on salvaged materials such as sundry papers, wood and metals. Once freed of his addiction in the late nineties, he turned his full attention to his artistic activity, producing a great number of drawings, paintings, sculptures and assemblages. His works depict entangled figures and faces that bear witness to a rich and strange inner world.

Abraham Levin (1880-1957)
Levin emigrated to the United States from Lithuania and found employment in the garment industry.
Bored with his sewing job, he started making pencil sketches and, at the age of 57, turned to painting. Encouraged by his teacher at a WPA art class in the Bronx community where he lived, he brought his work to the Uptown Gallery in Manhattan, which gave him his first show in 1941. Several exhibitions at the Galerie St. Etienne followed in quick succession. Initially, Levin was hailed as a great “find.”
The New York Times praised his first exhibition as “a thrilling experience.”
When Otto Kallir first saw Abraham Levin’s work in 1942, he was so impressed that he quickly changed the Galerie St. Etienne’s exhibition program to make room for the artist’s paintings. Kallir mounted two additional solo shows dedicated to Levin, in 1944 and 1967.

Palmer suffered a spinal injury in the 1920s that left him bedridden in later life. He painted prolifically during his last decades and forged a cult-like devotion with his fellow religious outsiders. The Cold War, the conversion of Russia, and his Sacrificial Love Society were important to him. His medium was pen, ink, and water color. His work stylized, intense, obsessive, colorful, dynamic, naive.
