silver star DICK LINDSTROM
Dick was born and raised in Connecticut. In his late teens, he was a catcher for a Pittsburgh Pirates farm club before wisely choosing instead to marry Lois, his high school sweetheart, and to complete his college education. On graduating from the University of Connecticut, Dick was commissioned as an Air Force second lieutenant and entered upon a long career as a USAF fighter pilot. Just days before his promotion to colonel, he was grounded as a pilot because of injuries received while ejecting from his stricken fighter. The Air Force stepped in and sent him to Syracuse University, where he earned the PhD in Physical Chemistry. This was followed by an appointment as a chemistry professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Dick accepted an appointment as a Professor and Department Head at the University of Connecticut. Eight years into that job, he was recalled to active duty by the Air Force to be the Associate Director of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Chemical Defense.

Valentine’s Day is a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of love and affection in many regions Mr. and Mrs. Castelli, 2021 Valentine’s Celebration of the world. Throughout February, MB residents will participate in such activities as trivia to learn how different cultures observe Valentine’s Day. Treat yourself; residents will be able to take advantage of mini facials by Nirma. Our Valentine’s Day celebration on Monday, Feb. 14, will be much anticipated as well as the Valentine Lunch Cookout Thursday, Feb. 17!
Retiring from the Air Force a second time, Lois and Dick moved to Tequesta, Fla. They were active in the Turtle Creek Club where Dick served a term as its’ President. Sadly, Lois passed in 2014, another victim of Alzheimer’s. Daughter Donna played matchmaker for dad in 2016 by pointing him toward her Connecticut next door neighbor, a very outgoing, pretty woman named Vicky Desjardins, who had also lost her spouse to Alzheimer’s. The pairing clicked, and Vicky and Dick now live with us here at Mangrove Bay.

February has arrived! This month holds several special, fun and historical days for us all to enjoy. Groundhog Day is celebrated every year on Feb. 2. We wonder if Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow or not. According to legend, if he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If, however, he does not see his shadow, spring is just around the corner! Monday, Feb. 14, we will have our Valentine’s Day Celebration with Carl Padilla performing. February’s theme is “Fall in Love With You.” We will be doing just that with trips out to the newly renovated Maltz Theater, to the Norton Museum for the art exhibits by two famous lovers Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, a Valentine’s High Tea at the Light House Art Gallery and tour the Andy Warhol show while there. Once again, as this New Year gets underway, we would like to thank everyone for making our community the best around.

VIRGINIE RABEL is a Licensed Practical Nurse. She has been working as a Nurse at Mangrove in the Assisted Living and Memory Care Communities for over two years. Virginie is originally from Haiti, moved to Montreal, Canada and lived there for seven years. In 1996, she moved to the U.S. and has been here ever since. Virginie is married to her husband, Harry, and they have a Virginie, congratulations! son, Aidan. Jinah, MCD and Evelyn, Mangrove’s Nurse Director, work very closely with her. Jinah, stated: “Virginie is an excellent nurse. She is very passionate about her work and her residents’ well-being. We enjoy working and having her here with us.”
