2021: LOOKING BACK, Moving Forward

Moving forward with HEART This year, we continued the journey of navigating the pandemic together - and our team members rose to the occasion, using our mission and our values as the road map. In 2021, we celebrated diversity and continued to cultivate an environment of unity, inclusivity, and acceptance, by adding unique programming that tapped into the rich history and culture of our residents, team, and our communities. Our commitment to being a great place to live and work did not waiver, as we reviewed benefits, recognized employees, and focused on ways to increase resident satisfaction. As we reflect on this year, Senior Lifestyle wants to acknowledge how your contributions, dedication, and commitment kept us moving forward every day.

PROGRAMMING Senior Lifestyle strives to create a safe and fulfilling work environment. For us, this means not just implementing protocols to preserve the physical health of our team and residents, but it means fostering a diverse and inclusive community - one free of racism and inequality. Through our Better Together initiative, our programming teams added more programs featuring topics of diversity and honoring holidays for all people of various backgrounds, and we encouraged both our teams and residents to celebrate diversity and inclusion. Through this continued initiative, we hope to ensure that our communities are places where people of any background, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, or ability feel welcomed, honored, and celebrated. For each month in 2021, we selected a theme featuring an aspect of diversity and built sample program calendars and monthly planning guides to share with all Senior Lifestyle communities. This method allowed us to draw ideas from our teams in the field and easily distribute content each month. We were amazed to see the community response. Our team members were eager to incorporate the new ideas and concepts in programming, and we are excited to continue the program in 2022.

STAYING THE COURSE WITH RESIDENT SATISFACTION While we continued to face obstacles and operational challenges due to COVID-19 in 2021, our teams continued to serve and satisfy residents and their families with HEART! This dedication of service is reflected in our Senior Living Alliance Satisfaction Survey ratings, which remained consistently at or above a 4.05 (on a 5-point scale) every month. To date in 2021, our average monthly score is 4.10 – even surpassing the pre-COVID score of 4.07 from 2018. We could not do it without the commitment, care, and extraordinary talents of every member of our team.

Charting a New Path with Human Resources While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a major issue for all of us, the greatest non-COVID-related challenge for 2021 has been the current staffing shortage. Senior Lifestyle has responded by streamlining processes where appropriate, increasing our reach with social media advertising, hiring regional recruiters to help communities directly, and providing more national partner assistance than we have ever had. Every day, we are looking at new ways to improve the hiring experience for our communities and candidates.

Improved community team member benefits As part of our effort to not only offer benefits that meet employees’ needs, but also demonstrate our compassion and understanding, Senior Lifestyle has made a few changes to our team member benefits. Now, the initial wait time to use accrued vacation time has changed from six months to 90 days, and time off for bereavement has increased from three days to seven days for some relationships. Our employees are very important to us, and we want them to feel our respect and commitment to them.
