February is National Low Vision Awareness, American Heart, Children’s Dental Health, and Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the United States. It is a dangerous disease that affects people of all ages. Although we cannot change certain risk factors such as age, gender, or family history, we can take certain preventative measures every day to help keep our hearts healthy.
1. Do not smoke or use tobacco products. Harmful chemicals in cigarettes and other tobacco products can damage your blood and heart vessels, which can cause your arteries to narrow and lead to a heart attack. Deciding to quit will decrease your chances of developing heart disease even if you have been smoking for many years.
2. Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Consistent physical activity throughout the week can help maintain a healthy weight, decrease blood pressure, decrease your chances of developing diabetes, and lower your cholesterol. All these benefits are good for your heart as well!
3. Eat a well-balanced diet. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat proteins are great heart-healthy foods.
4. Maintain a healthy weight. Keeping your weight within a healthy range decreases your risk of developing certain heart conditions and diseases. Check with your doctor to see what a healthy weight range is for you based on your height, age, and gender.
5. Get plenty of sleep every night. People who get little sleep are at higher risk of developing heart conditions. Adults are recommended to get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. To do that, put yourself on a regular sleep schedule, sleep in a dark room, and turn off electronics and anything that makes noise.
6. Get regular check-ups and exams. Go to the doctor’s office annually for cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes screenings to make sure they are all in healthy ranges.
