April is National Alcohol Awareness Month, Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month, Autism Awareness Month, Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month, STI Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Occupational Therapy Month, and Donate Life Month.

5 WAYS TO PREVENT ORAL CANCER

Oral cancer is one of the biggest causes of death to many individuals all over the country. This form of cancer attacks either the mouth or throat, and it is twice as likely to occur in men as in women. Within this year, over 40,000 will be diagnosed and out of that over 10,000 will pass away. These numbers are very alarming and need to be addressed to all individuals. Yet, there are ways to prevent yourself from developing oral cancer by following these simple solutions listed below.

1. Do not use tobacco in any form. Either continue to stay smoke-free or try to quit immediately.

2. Limit your alcohol intake daily. No more than 1 drink per day for women or 2 drinks per day for men.

3. Limit your time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is the strongest.

4. Make sure to wear lip balm with SPF 30 or higher to prevent any burns or blisters.

5. Eat a well-balanced diet filled with lots of fruits and vegetables!

All Aquatic Balance classes will be run by the Fitness Director, Kim Engen. The Low-Impact Water Aerobics classes will be run by Marky Forrest. Aqua Yoga will be taught by Sandi Tindal. All classes will be 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the class.

INGREDIENT OF THE MONTH

Asparagus is an essential vegetable for your body to feel good and function well. Asparagus benefits the body by helping us lose or maintain weight, prevent UTIs, prevent cancer, and strengthen our immune system. It protects us from free radicals, boosts our mood, fights bloating, strengthens our bones, and more!

Fitness Class Descriptions:

Low-Impact Water Aerobics with Marky Forrest

(T/TH at 10:00 AM and M/W at 6:30 PM)

This class is for men and women at an intermediate to advanced fitness level. Individuals will be taught how to strengthen and tone muscles, improve cardio-respiratory fitness, develop flexibility, and increase range of motion.

Aquatic Balance Class with Kim Engen

(M/W at 8:45 AM and 11:30 AM, T/TH at 8:45 AM, and F at 8:15 AM)

This class is for men and women at an intermediate fitness level. You will work on strengthening your legs and core muscles in the pool to improve your balance. Working on your balance and strength will allow you to walk better and help prevent falls.

Aqua Yoga Class with Sandi Tindal (F at 9:15 AM and 10:30 AM)

This class gives you the opportunity to cultivate healthy movement patterns, develop improved balance, and gain greater mobility throughout your whole body. You will discover the delight of moving in partnership with your breath and enjoy connecting with a variety of yoga postures in innovative, creative, and energizing ways. Come learn how to breathe fully and deeply with a powerful diaphragm, a stronger core, and a focused mind, all while reducing your stress levels.

If there is severe weather, we will not have pool classes. The gym will be open but the pool will be closed.
