Athlete of the week: Jack Heitz

After a few paltry years of Priory basketball, and now with the support of the newly formed Priory Basketball Brigade, Priory has become a formidable force in the Metro League. A bright spot in Priory basketball is Jack Heitz, a guard on both JV and Varsity. Averaging over 20 points a game on JV, the future looks promising for both Jack and Priory basketball. 1. Priory has not been known for basketball for the past couple years, mainly due to recent success in other sports. So do you think Priory basketball has become relevant again? Varsity started off the season playing pretty well, earning second place in the Valley Park tournament. As the season went on we struggled a little and lost some close games. We did beat Affton which was pretty big, and we also had success at the Affton tournament around Christmas. After Christmas break, our season went on and we played hard but came up short in many of our games. We have not simply finished our regular season the way we wanted to. 2. How successful has JV been this year? JV’s season was pretty good. We won most of our games except close games at MICDS and

Lutheran North. We also had two bad games against JFK and Westminster. JV has finished strong down the stretch, beating Burroughs. We look to cap off our season with a victory at home against Lutheran North. 3. Being on the roster for both JV and Varsity, you probably have a different role on each team. What are they? My role on JV is to lead the team and help win games. My role on varsity is to go in whenever Coach [Suarez] needs me and play my hardest. My role in practice is to get the starters better by challenging them in practice and also to make myself better for future years. 4. With not much playing time on varsity, what have you learned just from watching the upperclassmen? I have learned many things from the upperclassmen. Some lessons are to never give up and always play my hardest. I have also learned how to be a better team player and what to expect in the upcoming years on Varsity. 6. With a large and talented Senior class graduating this

year, what is the plan going forward? Next year the Rebels will be losing many important seniors including Jack Taiclet, Seve Esparrago, Kyle Martin, Mark Mannino, and James Pieper. Their shoes will be hard to fill but I think next year the Rebels will be able to contend in the Metro League and win some big games. We will have some great players returning like Ryan Token, the big man Jack Mueller, and Thomas Raybuck, who all started games this year. 5. With the season winding down, what is the playoff situation? Monday (February 20th) is our first playoff game versus Clayton. We are playing at MICDS and looking to beat them and move on to Westminster, the #1 seed. Having lost to Clayton by 8 points earlier in the year, this game is definitely winnable for the Rebels. The team is not a pushover by any means, and can upset anybody. A year removed from a ‘shocking’ victory over Duchesne, the Rebels better than any other team that anybody can beat anybody. You have the day off, so come out to MICDS on Monday to support your team.

Dodgeball Tournament

By Andrew Rhodes Contributor

Gentlemen, a call to arms has been issued to all those manly enough to accept the challenge. The second annual Community Service Club Dodgeball Tournament will be held next Friday, February 24. For all of you who do not know, the sport of dodgeball dates back to around 1015 B.C., when the first match was played between David and Goliath. The

sport requires one to have Jack Schwartz-like reflexes, an arm 10 times stronger than Brain Vaporean, and a passion comparable to the one David Gantt has for Gossip Girl. Last year there were many teams that came out and competed. Even a few faculty members found themselves out on the court asserting their physical dominance outside of the classroom. This tournament is a great way to help the Community Service Club raise money

for their various projects, and you get to inflict some pain on fellow classmates along the way. The price is $5.00 per person with a minimum of 5 people on a team. There will be a prize at the end for the team who goes the distance and emerges the champion. I leave you with the 5 D’s of Dodgeball as instructed by legend and Hall of Famer Patches O’Houlihan: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge.

“Blues Funeral” CD Review By Luke D Slabaugh

3

Editor In Chief

The new album by Mark Lanegan, Blues Funeral, was released Tuesday, February 6. This collection of songs by the Seattle-based rocker and features a plethora of skilled musicians from the American West Coast and is his seventh solo album—his first in eight years. You likely have no idea who Mark Lanegan is. He is far and away the most talented (or at least, most experienced) baritone on the rock scene right now, having performed to critical acclaim in parts of four decades now. He features a rich, deep voice that is suitable for a plethora of genres; his earlier material was rooted deeply in folk and country, and then progressed into alternative rock. Think of him as a cross between Tom Waits and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons in their prime. He’s not a mainstream artist by any means, but has appeared as a vocalist in several other notable projects, having sung on many tracks with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and bands like Creature With The Atom Brain, Soul Savers, Isobel Campbell, Screaming Trees, and Queens of the Stone Age.

However, this album is as close to mainstream music as Lanegan has ever been. While not poppy, the album features its fair share of hooks, ones that distinguish

one addictive song from the next, while not compromising the music at all. While Lanegan’s previous albums featured drums and (mostly) acoustic guitars that sounded very rawly produced, they have now been replaced with synths and less distorted, clean-sounding guitars. Anyone familiar with Lanegan’s older material will certainly leave impressed. He has taken his music in

a new direction, one that sounds fresh and relevant to his fan base today, while still remaining loyal to the great work of his past. Among the standout tracks is “The Gravedigger’s Song,” the album’s first track and only single. “Harborview Hospital” and “Ode To Sad Disco” are both built around very delicious hooks and breathtaking vocal performances and are instant classics. The lyrical content is Blues Funeral’s only drawback to the casual listener. “St. Louis Elegy”, for example, is a hauntingly slow and dreary sounding song, and it is the last of the album’s four opening tracks, all of which deal with death and disaffection. However, the contrast to later, upbeat tracks, like “Riot In My House”, which features guitar demi-god Josh Homme on guitar, makes the whole listen well worth it. Blues Funeral not your typical Dubstep or party music. It’s actually nothing close to that. But it’s probably the best rock album you’re going to hear in this half of 2012.
