Paul Deschler (53) has recently been called up to Varsity.

By Spencer Wright Staff Writer

If one were to ask every member of the sophomore class to name one of their peers that they truly respect and admire, almost every one would say Paul Deschler. “He’s just a force,” says JV running back Dom Coppola, “on and off the field, Paul is a guy I look up to.” Paul was one of the many transfers from Gateway School, and ever since his first year at Priory in 8th grade, he has left his mark. Paul was originally a middle linebacker for the JV football team, but has recently jumped up to Varsity due to injuries to older players. “It was a blow when Paul was called up to V-squad,” says Dom, “but I’m very proud of him and I know he can get the job done.” Paul has been known as a great leader in the sophomore class through his actions. He always leads by example, whether it is shown in his work ethic in the gym or his dedication to balancing school and sports. Paul is also on the student Honor Court for the sophomore class, showing how much his peers trust and respect him. Will O’Brien tried to sum up Paul in one short sentence: “He’s just the man, no doubt about it.” Whether it is making the open field tackle or helping out a friend, the sophomore class knows they can always rely on Paul.“It is truly an honor to say that I play on the same

team as Paul. He’s just such a stand-up guy,” says middle linebacker John Rhodes, who also has enjoyed a fantastic tenure on JV this year. “He really knows the game well, and he knows what he has to do to get the job done. I don’t think a coach could ask for and better of a player than Paul.” In the most recent JV game, the Rebels played a formidable opponent, Borgia. Even though the Rebels did not play a bad game, they fell short, 24-16. The main contributing factor was that Paul, or “Pauly-D” as he is known among his teammates, could not play because he was on Varsity (his partner in crime, John Rhodes, was also out with a concussion, leaving JV without their two top defensive threats.) Dom Coppola thinks back,“The defense definitely had its moment no doubt, but you could tell that the leadership and enthusiasm that Paul injects his team with was lacking. When he gets that big hit--BOOM!-- the sideline goes crazy and a new energy is restored in us.” Paul Deschler will be a force to be reckoned with during the next couple of years, but right now the Rebels are focusing on rolling into the postseason with the ultimate goal of going to the Edward Jones Dome for the state championship. Paul and the Rebels football team encourage fans to come to the next Rebels football game versus Confluence. When “Pauly-D” makes that electrifying hit, the entire crowd will definitely pump their fists in the air.

3 Juniors Should have Sr. Privileges By Peter Cogan Staff Writer

It has always been a tradition at Priory that Seniors have off-campus privileges, and the only requirement for these privileges is that the Seniors have no D’s or F’s at the Fall midterm. But why can’t the Juniors have off-campus privileges? One major argument against the Juniors having off-campus privileges is that Junior year is the most rigorous year out of all six at Priory, and they need to be focusing more on class than on going out to lunch. The privileges should not distract kids from concentrating on school, but maybe the requirements for these privileges should be slightly more demanding.

centage (1-12) when he attends. “Our bullpen is godly,” said Trevor as he explained the causes for the Cardinals’ success. “It’s also all in the power of [utility player Allen Craig’s pet tortoise] Torty. You’ve got to have the power of a magical tortoise to win, and it will overcome my bad luck any day.” Trevor also questioned the opposing Texas Rangers’ decision to use the struggling C.J. Wilson to pitch in Game 1. “I don’t even know how he stayed in the game for that long [6 1/3 innings]. He’s a toad.” Jin took issue with the following comment that a fatigued Tony LaRussa made after the Cardinals won the NLDS: “Well as long as that Miss Squirrely keeps dating, uh, Craig’s Mr. Torty,” La Russa

Maybe, instead of having no D’s of F’s to get to go off campus, like the Seniors, Juniors should have to have all A’s or B’s, or a certain GPA to go off campus. This would make the Juniors work harder in class, but it would also let them go out to lunch every once in a while as a reward for their hard work. Another problem with allowing Juniors to go off campus is that they have classes scheduled for all seven periods of the day, and that would not leave enough time to leave campus for lunch and get back in time for fifth period. However, there are free periods for most Juniors: those who chose a study hall over a fine art or Latin, and also those who do not have art history that term. These periods could be blocked

around the lunch periods on certain days so that the students could go out to lunch. And if they don’t meet the guidelines for the off campus privileges, they would go to the study halls until they raise their grades. Driving would not be a problem, because nearly every Junior has his drivers’ license, and even if someone hasn’t gotten it yet he can easily get a ride with one of his friends. I think that off campus privileges would let Juniors take a relaxing break from their stressful schedule at Priory, and it would push them even harder to get good grades in order to go off campus. It’s a winwin situation.

Curse (cont.) said. “I just think we should get ‘em a suite because we don’t want them to interrupt the game. The problem is that Craig hadn’t been playing. I think the squirrel was looking around for Torty because Torty was looking around for Craig. I don’t know, that’s nonsense.” Jin went on record and protested, “I think Tony LaRussa is out of his mind if he doesn’t recognize the fact that we wouldn’t be here without the Rally Squirrel.” The Rally Squirrel refused to comment via its Twitter account. However, members of the Priory community offered their sincere congratulations and words of encouragement to Trevor. “I think that it was fate for Trevor to see at least one win in his life,” senior

Marc Dunbar commented, “and no better time than last night.” Junior Thomas Burton provided his own explanation. He suggested Trevor only attend World Series games, saying, “I think the Cardinals won for the simple reason that Trevor is bad luck unless it’s the World Series.” Instead of worrying about the public’s dispute over the now-reversed curse, Trevor told reporters that he would continue to root for the Cardinals throughout the Series, and his life, and that he would like to see more games in the future. Right now, though, he is focusing on the Series. “If I could just attend every game, we would win the four games.”

4 Lacrosse Should be All-Inclusive By Colin Kopsky Staff Writer

Should upperclassmen be able to participate in lacrosse? Karen Tajkarimi | Record Weekly This year marks the first time that Priory will have a lacrosse team in the high school. Sophomores will be playing for the first time, along side the Freshmen, who started playing back in 7th grade. This raises a debate: should the Juniors and Seniors have a varsity lacrosse team? Senior and former lacrosse teammate of mine Alec Atkinson says yes we should, adding, “ The junior and senior classes combined are more athletic than the Freshmen and Sophomores.” Even though most of the upperclassmen have

never played lacrosse before, it is a fairly easy sport to pick up, and I think that these two classes together would make a good team. Also, who wouldn’t want to wear turf dogs, mid-calves, nice shorts, a lax pinnie, croakies, and a sweet pair of shades all day long? Senior baseball player Carter Gage disagrees with Alec saying that we should not have a team. Gage defended his stance: “I don’t support lax because it steals potential players from the baseball team.” I see where both of these Seniors are coming

from. Although lacrosse for Juniors and Seniors would be great, it could decrease team sizes in other sports such as track and baseball. I played lacrosse for four years and can honestly say it is one of my favorite sports, and I wish I could have continued playing. Although I would not play lacrosse because of my commitment to golf, I would still go to a lot of the games because I enjoy the game.

Remembering Steve Jobs By Alex Hill

Staff Writer The famous founder of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs, passed away on October 5th, at the age of 56.He died of respiratory arrest brought on by a pancreatic tumor. He had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2004; in 2009, he received a liver transplant. Apple employees celebrated Jobs’ life in a private gathering at 10 A.M on October 19th at Apple’s Cupertino campus. “Although many of our hearts are still heavy, we are planning a celebration of his life for Apple employees to take time to remember

the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place,” CEO Tim Cook said in a formal email to the employees. Steve Jobs revolutionized the technological world in many ways. These are a few of his major accomplishments: Without Steve Jobs, “personal computers” might never have entered the mainstream. His first PC was the Apple II, which was released in 1976. This computer soon became very popular in schools. Another of his greatest achievements was the release of the iPhone. phone. Its many features and sleek design are highly attractive to buyers. Its main reason for success was its universal appeal as a smartphone. Jobs is also responsible for another successful Apple creation, the iPad. Apple released this mini-computer-in-atablet in early 2010. It also gained universal acclaim and sales. Steve Jobs was possibly the greatest influence on modern technology. His contributions to Apple Inc. and the rest of the world will always be remembered.

Pedal the Cause: The Conclusion By Scott Leer Humanitarian

Pedal the Cause was a great success, with 1,300 bike-riders raising over 1.2 million dollars. The Priory Rebel Riders had a fun time at the event, and captain Nicky Sarai took first place in the whopping 25-mile ride. The Priory Rebel Riders have raised over $10,000 now on their own; with Priory alum Bill Osterholt’s matching donation of $10,000, that is over $20,000 raised by the Rebel Riders Thanks to all those who donated

and rode to make this achievement possible, especially to Mr. Osterholt for his extremely generous donation. Our top three donors were: Mr. Sevastianos (father of Aris ‘15) with $2,295 raised, Mr. Reitz (father of Peter ‘12) with $1,350 raised, and Mrs. Schulz, beloved faculty member and mother of Paul ‘12, who volunteered at the event and raised $1,220 for the Rebel Riders. It truly was an amazing sight to see

the support for the event on the race day. Hopefully, Priory can organize a team for next year’s Pedal the Cause, despite the vast number of seniors and upperclassmen who contributed this year. The charity hosted a great event and promises to be only bigger and better next year.
