Hockey looks to Oakville With 3-2 and 7-2 wins over Rockwood Summit, the Rebels look to #5 seeded Oakville in the Wickenheiser Quarter Finals.

Players celebrate with Junior Goalie Liam Ware after a win. Liam has been a major asset in the playoffs so far, allowing only two goals per game against Rockwood Summit.

It’s that time of year again. The high school hockey playoffs are in full swing and the skating Rebels looked to achieve their preseason goal of making it to the second round of the playoffs as the fourth seed in the Wickenheiser Cup. In the first round the Rebels were pitted against Rockwood Summit, seeded thirteenth in the Wick. The first of the best-of-two series was played Friday night at the beautiful Fenton Forum. The Rebels jumped out to an early first period lead with a goal from senior Sean Lamb. Summit, however, tied the game early in

the second period. After playing poorly for most of the second period, the Rebels regained the lead at the end of the period with a goal by junior Nick Thompson. Rockwood Summit started the third period off with a powerplay and scored early, tying the game yet again. Only a minute later, however, senior John Notter put the Rebels up 3-2 with a very nice powerplay goal. This is where the score would remain the rest of the game as the Rebels went on to take the pivotal first game in the series. The Rebels returned to the ice Tuesday night looking to close out their opening series on a high note after a somewhat weak victory in game one. The Rebels played as if they had something to prove early in the game

and took a commanding 4-0 lead. Rockwood Summit got right back in the game with two quick powerplay goals, however, making it 4-2 midway through the second period. The Rebels took control again at the end of the second period with a goal which made the score 5-2. The Rebels controlled the third period even though there were a lot of penalties and scored two more goals, dominating play and playing exceptionally solid defensively. The Rebels next opponent is the fifth seed Oakville. Oakville plays a very tough schedule during the regular season and is a big, fast team. They should be a very difficult opponent and the Rebels will need a lot of fan support in order to move on to the next round.

It is often said that “all you need is love”. This came as a shock to me, as I foolishly believed that you really needed air, food, water, shelter, and medicine, but no, those things are nothing compared to love. Luckily, I have been educated now (largely thanks to a very special person in my life), and thus in honor of Valentines Day, the great celebration of the spontaneity of love, this week’s column is devoted to the greatest things about romance. Also, in order to appease all you “feelings” guys, this column will be 100% sarcasm/ cynicism free. 1: It Takes Two to Tango: One of the greatest things about love is that it forces you to do things you know you need to, but have always put off. I, for one, am dieting like mad, and I am quite happy at the changes. Love makes you get out of the house, stop wasting all your time on the internet, in the end, it makes you a better man. All it takes is dedication, free time, a frighteningly large amount of money (unfortunately it makes you decide between women and pricey wargames), and an ability to shut up and mumble “I agree”

whenever you hear the phrase “your friends are….” 2: You Discover New Things: This is a purely hypothetical thing, as neither you (the reader) nor me would ever frantically research whatever your paramour is interested in just to have something to talk about/ seem more interesting/ actually have something in common with your special someone. Once, again, we are men, we do not care about what others like, no matter how important it is to the person you love and desperately want to impress. 3: It Gives You and Your Friends Some Space: You did not really need your friends did you? I mean, they were just placeholders until you met that girl in your life, right? Now the answer to the previous two questions is quite clear to any wise man, and to any man in general. In fact, this is a great time to practice two simple words that will save your life/relationship, “yes dear.” 4: You are Weaned Away from Awesome Movies: Unless you are blessed enough to find a girl that will agree to see The Book of Eli (which if you are, you really do not need this column as you are probably in a state of extreme happiness right now) you are going to have to learn (Continued on back page)

Billy Brohan: We’re nearing Valentine’s Day, my favorite day of the year, and I’m sure you need some help with what to buy your lovely lady. That’s where I come in. First and foremost, flowers are a must. Anything as simple as Schnucks’ daisies will do, but I’m sure she’s worth more than $6.75 to you. I say go above and beyond. If you’re meeting her somewhere, a single rose will do, otherwise a nice bouquet, a box of chocolates, even a cheesy Walgreens Valentine Teddy Bear will make her feel appreciated.

These gifts are essential, but cliché if they’re given alone. These must be just simple warm-up gifts. I say go all out. Get her something special that she and only she would understand. I really can’t give any examples without delving into the deepest, darkest depths of my own love history, but trust me, the more you think about her gift the better. Price tags only matter for jewelry really, which is always a fine backup plan, but overall your Valentines gift should be memorable for both you and your significant other. Benny Broski: While my partner might think that the present is the most important part of Valentine’s Day, I’m going to have to disagree. It’s all about (Continued on back page)

The Weekly Update The Record - The Official Student Publication of the Saint Louis Priory School

The Red Cross and The Measles Initiative Ms. Cazabonne Human Rights Watch

The American Red Cross is having a measles vaccine campaign by selling chocolate roses. Each chocolate rose will pay for two vaccines for a child in Africa. The Human Rights Organization at Priory is helping the Red Cross with this campaign by encouraging the students to purchase a chocolate rose for $2.00 a piece. Some facts about Measles: *Measles is a leading cause of vaccine preventable death for children under age five. *Immunization is often the only basic healthcare service that children receive in their first year of live. *It costs less than a dollar to vaccinate a child against measles.

Student Council Update: Junior School Mixer Student Council has been busy in the past few weeks selling Battle of the Band tshirts and Junior School Mixer tickets. The mixer, which is tonight at 7:00pm in the gym, will be a great time. Tickets, which are available in the Junior School office, are $9 or you can pay $10 at the door this evening. There is still plenty of time to invite your friends. Battle of the Bands planning is well underway and all of the t-shirts have already been ordered. There will be a few extra shirts available the night of at the event itself but they will sell out quickly. Bands should be practicing and getting ready for the big event. Last year it was a hit and we plan for an even bigger crowd this go around. Lastly, Student Council would like to thank all of the student volunteers who made Xanadu possible this year. One in four students receive financial aid which is exactly what Xanadu funds.

*Measles has been virtually eliminated in the Western Hemisphere, yet it is still a leading cause of death among children in Africa and Asia. If you want to help prevent Measles, purchase a chocolate rose for Valentine’s Day. You can purchase these roses from the members of the Human Right Organization and from Ms. Cazabonne.

2006 Draft:

From “Aint’s” to “Saints” A Short History of the Saints Franchise

Were the Saints right? Peter Jochens, ’11 David Taiclet, ’11

Sports Writer

Sports Editor

We all surely remember the 2006 NFL Draft, where the Texans, with the number one pick, selected Mario Williams, instead of Reggie Bush or Vince Young. Now after 3 seasons I look back to see if this was a smart pick. Many critics argue that it was because now Williams is in the Pro Bowl and Bush and Young are far from it. But I disagree. I agree with the choice not to select Vince Young. Despite his rookie of the year award he has been set back by strange off the field incidents that have slowed his development as an NFL QB. To not pick Reggie Bush was a huge mistake. While Bush was only a moderate contributor to the Saints Super Bowl win, he would have been an extremely successful back in the high flying Texans offense this year. Did the Texans make the playoffs? No. Want to know why? Because Steve Slaton was their running back. He had more fumbles than touchdowns and only averaged 3 yards per carry. Bush averaged 5.5 yards a carry and scored twice as many touchdowns as Slaton on half as many carries. I do believe that championship teams are built from the inside out, but the Texans seem to want to focus on building an explosive offense by relying on playmakers not lineman. Reggie Bush is a playmaker and Steve Slaton is not. Had the Texans drafted Bush in ’06 they would be a playoff team and could challenge the Colts for the AFC South title. The Texans came into the season with very high expectations but finished the year at 9-7. With Bush they could have been so much better. It is a shame that the front office of the Texans could make such a big mistake. This blunder will keep Houston from reaching its full potential.

The Saints headed into the Super Bowl XLIV with a record of 275-378-5. Of course, they came out of it with another W, but the 378 severely outweighs the 276. The franchise began Sept. 17, 1967, when rookie John Gilliam ran in the opening kickoff against the Los Angeles Rams. They then went two decades without a winning season, and another 12+ years until their first playoff victory (against the St. Louis Rams). In 1980 the ‘Aints were born when fans were urged by local broadcasters to show up to the Superdome wearing brown paper bags over their head. This practice continued 20 years, through 1999 when the Saints went 3-13. The next season, the Saints went 10-6, winning the NFC West Division and ending an era for the ‘Aints. This is the season when the Saints took down the Rams powerhouse after a dropped punt return by Az Zahir-Hakim, ending a storming comeback by the Rams. The reborn Saints were led under head coach Jim Haslett (former Rams defensive coordinator/interim head coach), and quarterback Jeff Blake, who was a 6-round draft pick. After a rough patch from the 2001 season through the 2005 season (backto-back 3-13 seasons), the Saints appointed current head coach Sean Payton as head coach. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Payton turned the struggling team around to a 10-6 record, and a playoff berth, which was ended by the Chicago Bears (the runners up in Super Bowl XLI.) Payton won the 2006 AP NFL Coach of the Year Award. With new quarterback Drew Brees, the Saints tried and rebuild the franchise. Going 7-9 and 8-8 in the 2007 and 2008 seasons, respectively, the Saints finally captured it all, in the 2009 season. This brought hope and joy to the rebuilding city of New Orleans, and all of Louisiana. Here’s to the city of New Orleans, and to the franchise that brings long needed help to a devastated people.

Kwai Nyu Ruggers Handily Defeat Kirkwood Patrick Mulvihill, ’10 Editor in Chief

The Kwai Nyu Ruggers took to a snowy and puddle-ridden pitch this past Saturday to take on a very athletic yet inexperienced Kirkwood team. The game started off slowly and rather embarrassingly for the Rebels, with dismal attempts on offense in the first half. As a result, the team failed to get the ball out of its own half. That being said, a couple of phenomenally fought defensive stands kept the Kirkwood Ruggers out of the endzone on several key goal line stands. It was truly a battle of the elements, as each tackle was complimented by a cold splash of icy mud to the face and the ensuing drenched jerseys, shorts, socks, and

shoes. Both teams went into halftime freezing, wet, beaten, and scoreless. Kwai Nyu came into the second half and quickly asserted their dominance over the inexperienced Kirkwood team. Thanks largely to sharp and strategic play, the backs stepped up and quickly scored two tries for Priory. McCarthy Grewe had an especially nice run across the field and was tackled just short of the endzone. Brendan Kelly was right on his tail and did the rest of the work, scoring the try. Soon after these tries, the forwards did their parts by adding two tries of their own. The athletic but confused Kirkwood team could only watch on as the game slipped away from them due to an organized backfield and a hard fighting, hard hitting group of forwards. The Rebels came out of the game with a 27-0 victory and high hopes for their next game against Parkway United. Come on out to see a very talent Kwai Nyu squad try for their second victory against the Parkway Rugby team.
