Holy Week Arrives

Senior Charlie Peterson and Freshmen Sam Friedman and John Vitale silently reflect in Church on Monday during their Theology period in preparation for Holy Week. The Students are given Thursday, Friday, and Monday off school in order to properly celebrate.

The Easter Break is almost upon us and it has been noticeable across campus over the past several days. The Monks seem busier than usual. The students are buzzing with excitement for the three-day week. There have been sightings of Freshman Sam Friedman and John Vitale reflecting in the church (see picture above), something not often seen during Ordinary Time.

Holy Week is theologically the most important week of the year. Yes, even more important than the week of Spring Term exams. The monks have an intense schedule in the coming days including Tenebrae on Friday evening at 8pm where books are literally slammed on church benches in complete darkness (all are welcome to attend and I highly encourage it). The Triduum schedule begins on Holy Thursday at 10:00am with the Chrism Mass held at the Cathedral Basilica in downtown Saint Louis.

Good Friday continues the prayers with Stations of the Cross at mid-day and Liturgy at 3:00pm. Tenebrae, the most anticipated prayer of the year, is, as stated above, on Friday evening at 8pm. There is an Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday at 8pm rounding out the week. All of these are in addition to the Daily Office. I suggest you look into the services, as well as the services at your own local parishes in order to properly and reverently celebrate the holiest week in the entire year.

Arbitrarily Judgementalitastic: The five people/things in need of redemption

Alexandre Todorov, ‘10 Weekly Editorial Writer

As you, the astute, cultured reader that makes up the base of my reading market (along with the proud parents of priory lads) may have noticed, there has been a decline in the quality of this column since the start of the third term, culminating in its non existence last week. Thus, I am going to kick off spring with spring cleaning, both mine own, and that of others.

As he announced that the assembly was over I began to burn with indignation. How dare they! How dare the shadowy puppet masters that run this school deny the greatest Stuco member an attempt to share his wisdom! As of now I am declaring war on this dark junta, and no matter what evil forces they throw at me, how many assassination attempts I survive, I will not rest until Ben gets his speech. Poor Defense leads to Rebel Loss

Jeromans win and lose in double header

Rebels suffer a 6-0 loss to Lutheran St. Charles after poor offensive and defensive showing

Jeromans fall 15-11 in scrimmage before defeating league opponents 15-1

John Notter, ’10 Sports Writer Baseball played game two of their season last Friday against Lutheran St. Charles. Splitting our record with them last year (1-1), the Rebels hoped to start the season with a winning streak. Unfortunately, the Rebels suffered a defeat of 6-0. Joey Heitz closed out the game after Bryan Hercules started, and Andy Schwartz relieved. While all of the pitchers did their job and threw well, it was the Priory defense that was not mentally tough enough to overcome and bounce back from the errors and mistakes. Despite the negativity of the game, Joey came in calm, cool, and confident. This approach led him to strike out four batters in two innings, and completely diminish any further Cougar offense. A loss this early in the season has given the team a sour taste in their mouths, and has taught them that wins don’t and will not just fall out of the sky for them. As coach Ham put it, “no one is going to lay down for us, we have yet to prove ourselves.” With an attitude adjustment and a hunger for victory, the Rebels are looking to scoop up a couple of wins this week with their games against John F. Kennedy (Wednesday at Priory) and Principia (Thursday at Principia). The continued support of our fans is much appreciated, however the more the merrier. With that in mind, the weather is looking to be perfect baseball weather for the games and with no classes Thursday, a Priory baseball game sounds like a great way to spend a couple of hours just to relax, enjoy the day, and cheer on your classmates to victory.

Patrick Mulvihill, ’10 Editor in Chief The Jeromans played a double header this past Saturday against Francis Howell Central’s Seven Sages Ultimate Club. The first game, against the Varsity squad (ranked fourth in the state) started off slowly and very evenly. Sloppy play from Priory kept the game close at half, though the Jeromans went into halftime up 8-6. Handlers Kyle Hill and Patrick Mulvihill played timidly, fighting a harsh wind and a strong zone defense. Priory’s catching abilities were also very inconsistent, as the wind was bouncing the disc up and down and the remnants of Thursday and Friday’s rain was wetting the Frisbee. Clayton Petti, Sean Lamb, and Seve Esperrago fought hard in the middle, creating a difficult offense for FHC to beat. Ragen Frost and Eric Anderson provided a large and intimidating presence deep in the field. Going into the second half, the tired and outnumbered Jeromans got some relief by the arrival of Josh Hartke and James Capps, teaming up with Michael Collins, Steven Klienheider, Ben Corley and Charlie Rosebrough in the field. Eventually however, fatigue set in, leading to lazy and unwise throws, missed catches, and lazy defending. The Seven Sages eventually drew away from the Jeromans, scoring four unanswered to win it 15-11. In their second game, the Jeromans found no competition in their league opponents, Francis Howell Central’s Junior Varsity squad. The Jeromans worked on their offensive formation and easily defeated the team 15-1.

Golf shoots well, loses to powerhouse Westminster Solid scores at Bellerive unable to pull team away from WCA’s talent and experience

Peter Jochens, ’11 Sports Writer The opening week of the Golf Season started with two practice matches at St. Albans. The team looked fresh and ready to start the season. Notable scores were brought in by senior Steve Theisen, who shot 38 on both days, Clay Swanger, who shocked the team with his 41, Mason Meiners, who scored a 39 on his home course, and freshman Andrew “Foges” Fogarty brought in a 43 in his first varsity practice. The Varsity team was excited to play the first match, against Lutheran North at Norwood Country Club, but the weather turned against us, and the match was rained out and rescheduled for April 30th. So the golf squad went into their first match against Westminster, probably their best opponent, untested at Bellerive. There the team fought hard but could not prevail as Westminster took the match. Clayton Petti shot the low score, a 39, and Mason Meiners and Steve Theisen followed with 41’s. Andrew Fogarty scored a 44 in his first Varsity golf match, and Tony Hayes shot a 43, the third best score. The team hopes to bring more confidence with one match under their belt as they take on SLUH at Bellerive next Monday.
