Priory Mourns Loss The class of 2010 departs, leaving behind six years of memories and tremendous service to the school.

Patrick Mulvihill, ’10 Former Editor in Chief

A hush has fallen over the Priory campus in the past few days. Priory’s faculty, administration, and remaining 359 students have observed a seemingly endless moment of silence for the 59 recently departed members of the Class of 2010. The 59 seniors will be moving on to 39 different Universities around the United States, including Harvard, University of Chicago, Notre Dame, USC, and Salisbury Prep. With these seniors, Priory is losing two recipients of perfect 36 ACT’s,

many All-League and All-State athletes, All-District musicians, 21 students recognized for National Merit Scholarship (36% of the class), and three National foundation scholarship winners. Seven members of the class have been recruited as college athletes, 17 have been invited to honors programs, and overall, the class has been awarded over $1,800,000 in scholarships, a Priory record. There have been mixed emotions around the campus. Father Michael has been ecstatic, with high hope for what he deems the “greatest class to have ever graced Earth with its presence.” Some have taken the loss harder than others, however. Jack Ciapciak and John Vitale

have been seen milling around the senior landing in hopes that a random member of the class is back for an exam or meeting. Whether the reactions are gloomy or euphoric, the moment is truly bittersweet, as the Class of 2011 makes its own move to become, as John Notter puts it, the “Big Dogs on campus.” On a personal note, I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation for every contributor to The Record for the past two years, whether that involvement included writing, editing, taking photos, or simply submitting ideas. Thank you for putting up with my witless humor, my derisive banter, and my somewhat flowery writing.

Final Arbitrarily Judgementalistic: The five best things about Priory

Alexandre Todorov, ‘10 Weekly Editorial Writer

Well, my time is up. Unfortunately, this is going to be the last Arbitrarily with me at the helm. Now, I know it is going to be hard to contain your sorrow, believe me, if I were not ludicrously manly, and thus incapable of crying, I too would be sobbing. Yet, there is hope. Alex Noddings is continuing this column, and I will continue writing columns for Boston University's paper. So just surf the web, and you will find it. Anyways, this week's column is going to be a look back at the five best things about Priory, and, as of now, I am breaking character (no, I am not like that in real life, except for the omniscience part). 1: The Jolly Ranchers/ StarburstsThese little colorful bursts of candy are one of the most welcome changes to come with the introduction of Father Michael as headmaster. Every day you never know when one of those squares of joy will fly over the railing and land in the senior lounge. There is one small risk of it hitting your eye, (it hurts, let me tell you that) but it is acceptable in the face of free candy. 2: Friday Masses- These will always be exciting, no matter which priest is officiating. Fr. Augustine's sermons are always hilarious, Fr. Michael's are full of wisdom, and Fr. Ambrose's, let's just say they put a “fire” in you. 3: Mr. Barrett and Mr. Bussen- If Priory were a sitcom, (though it is funnier than one) then Mr. Barrett and Mr. Bussen would be the duo of the trusting, hopeful, kind mentors with the wise cracking, sardonic, and somewhat gleefully sadistic judge. These two are

absolutely hilarious and really add something special to your day. Plus, Mr. Combs would make a great gruff but fair boss. 4: The Swan- The swan, though he has calmed down somewhat now that he is alone, still adds a touch of excitement to this school. Whether you are by the monastery or the pond, you never know when a hiss will indicate that now would be a good time to start running in the opposite direction. And I mean let’s face it, how many other schools have a swan on campus? 5: Deadlines- One thing Priory does teach you is how to finish enormous quantities of work while still having the energy left over for sports, friends, and romance. With more emphasis on the first two. Namely, it teaches you the beauty of the last minute. I, for one, have learned how to write one of these things in the 30 minutes between realizing that the deadline is in thirty minutes and the actual deadline. Now, some people would say that it would have been better for us to learn about spacing out our work so we don't get overly stressed out. Unfortunately, they forget that the rest of the time is taken up by panicked writing for other deadlines. On the bright side you will laugh when your college classmates complain about all the papers they have to write, knowing that you could do them in half the time, and with both arms tied behind your back - by flesh eating piranhasaurs. Anyways, this is the final Arbitrarily so I would like to thank my readers, especially those who did not mock it too severely (all one of you). Noddings is going to take over and I hope you will support him as he gets used to writing this column (not that I have set the bar that high anyhow). Once again thanks for reading, and enjoy Priory while it lasts, for it goes by too quickly. Laus Tibi Domine!

Senior Science Seminar Survey

Friday, 5/14/2010 Senior Science Seminar Class

Colin Bruns, ’11

With the April 29th release of his single Not Afraid, and the projected June 22nd release of Recovery, his second album in a year, it is clear that Eminem is back. After Eminem's release of the album Encore in 2004, he went on a four year hiatus. This was caused by the publicly known personal problems of the rapper. Many critics wondered if the music industry had lost one of the greatest rappers of all time. In addition, speculation of his greatness really heated up around the time that Eminem was forced to release a greatest hits CD by his record company. The greatest hits album, released in 2005, was entitled Curtain Call: The Hits in case it ended up being Eminem's final album. However, with his 2009 release of Relapse (which is staged after his stay at rehab), it became evident that Eminem was in the process of getting his life back together and was definitely not finished pumping out music. Relapse featured Billboard hits like: Crack a Bottle, We Made You, Beautiful and Underground. The album itself ended up being in the top ten for 2009, and won a Grammy. Although the public saw glimpses of the “old” Eminem in these hits, it was evident that he hadn’t completely abandoned the hokey horror and mock rap that resulted in short-lived and easily forgotten hits. For example: Just Lose It, 3 a.m. and My Mom. True Eminem fans saw the potential billboard topping album, but also realized that Eminem had so much more to offer. (Continued on page 8)

Summer Concerts Preview Colin Bruns, ’11

Entertainment Writer

Summer is quickly approaching, and a big part of summer is concerts. I took it upon myself to investigate concerts of every genre for you, the people. May 29 -Brad Paisley. Brad has come for the past few summers and has consistently put on a good show. Country fans will not be disappointed with this kickoff to summer at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Jun 6 -Pointfest. A semi-annual concert put on by local radio station 105.7 the point. It is a full day concert with performances during the day on the side stages, all leading up to the headliners who are on the main stage. Headliners this year are: Hollywood Undead, Saliva, Coheed & Cambria, Papa Roach, Seether, and Three Days Grace. It will be held at Verizon Wireless. Jun 10 -Tech N9ne. The Missouri native will be coming to St. Louis to perform at Pops. Tech N9ne is easily one of the fastest rappers alive and is great to listen to. But he hasn't put out much new music, so look for him to rap some of his older songs.

Tennis Update Spencer King, ’10 Sports Writer

Tennis is nearing the end of what is clearly a rebuilding season. The team’s record this season was 4-10. With the help of our new coach, Kurt Miller, we expect to become a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. We had several returning players this season: seniors Matt Menendez and Peter McLaughlin, juniors Matt Keating (captain) and Richard Mazuski, and sophomores Spencer King, Charlie Moore, and Jack Schmerold. We also had two very promising freshmen: Daanish Jamaluddin and Patrick Lindmark.

Jun 12 -Super Jams 3. This is the third annual concert put on by radio station hot 104.1. So far it will be featuring Drake, Mario, Gucci Mane, Young Money, Waka-Flaka-Flame, Nicki Minaj and others that have yet to be announced. It'll be held at Verizon. Jun 16 -Dave Matthews Band, will be coming to Verizon for the second summer in a row, I'll see all you bros there. Jun 24 -The Eagles and Dixie Chicks will be at Busch Stadium. Despite the Dixie Chicks it should be a pretty cool night. Jun 26 -Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special will be at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Should be an entertaining crowd. Jul 17 -Lady Gaga will be at Scottrade Center. I recommend to take the one-and-done approach to Lady Gaga concerts, you won't regret the concert, but you will see things in the crowd you won't want to ever again. These are only a few of the concerts coming this summer. Hit a couple of them up!

Peter McLaughlin, a senior leader, was out for the majority of the season with a shoulder injury. Our district line up consisted of Matt Keating and Richard Mazuski playing doubles, Jack Schmerold and Kyle Collins playing doubles, and Daanish Jamaluddin and Spencer King playing singles. The only returning district players are Matt Keating and Spencer King. At districts we had some success. Matt Keating and Richard Mazuski both advanced beyond the quarter finals. If they win their semifinal match this Thursday they will qualify for state, earning Matt a return trip to Springfield.

VS

With all the hullabaloo concerning the new law proposed by the state of Arizona, I was asked to write an article expressing my views on this matter. First of all, Arizona has the right, through the 10th Amendment, to create laws concerning problems that arise in their own state. They have every right to make this law so all you folks saying that this is unconstitutional are just plain wrong. Each individual state has its own problems, and they have the power to correct them. Arizona obviously has an illegal alien problem. Therefore they should correct it. It is a known fact that Mexico shares a border with the United States, and many Mexicans end up in the U.S. It is not profiling if a person suspected to be Mexican is stopped and questioned about their nationality, because the only country we share a border with in our southern region is Mexico. These days Mexican police forces are cracking down on drug lords across their country. These drug lords are forced out of their country by the police and just happen to end up in the U.S. And why wouldn’t they go to the U.S.? We seem to support the fact that people can walk across our border illegally and not pay taxes but can send their child to public school, make minimum wage, and be protected by the Law. These illegals are abusing our system of government, and we need to do something about it. SB 1070 is just the thing. It is one thing for an illegal to secretly abuse the rights given by a country to the people. But it is an entirely different thing to demand rights given to citizens when in fact you are not even a citizen. If you are not a citizen of a country that you are residing in, you do not get the same rights as a citizen of that country. When someone goes through the whole immigration process then they can have rights guaranteed by the Constitution. But don’t ask for rights unless you can prove you are legal. Let me make this very clear, this issue has nothing to do with human rights, racism, racial profiling, or any manner of racist intentions. “The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States” (S.B. 1070 lines 7-10). It boils down to this. If you’re a legal citizen why care about this law? You’re legal it doesn’t affect you. If you are illegal, you of course are going to care, because you would like to stay in America and enjoy all of it’s benefits, but give nothing back in return, who wouldn’t? If you believe that this law is racist you are seriously misinformed, it is only trying to prevent illegal aliens from entering Arizona, and draining its economy, causing social and criminal problems. Sorry.

CON Gustavo Sanchez, ’11 Opinions Writer

The Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, recently signed the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act. This law, also known as SB (Senate Bill) 1070, is intended to combat the escalating problems caused by drug smugglers and illegal weapon traffickers on the border between Arizona and Mexico. In Gov. Brewer’s own words, she is not willing to “sacrifice our safety to the murderous greed of drug cartels.” One of the problems with this law is that it does not only target criminals, but it has the potential to target all members of the Latino community, both legal residents and undocumented immigrants alike. When this law is put into effect, it will require immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times, and police officers will be instructed to question anyone who looks reasonably suspicious of being an undocumented immigrant. But what does someone who looks reasonably suspicious look like? Many politicians, activists, and religious leaders of various denominations fear that looking reasonably suspicious will become synonymous with looking Latino. Numerous priests and bishops of the Catholic faith, both in Arizona and in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have spoken out, adamantly opposing this new legislation. Many of these, such as Jesuit Father Sean Carroll, believe that this law "violates the dignity of the human person" and ultimately "undermines the safety of our community." In truth, SB 1070 will do very little to stop the illegal activity that it was designed to address. It does, however, have the potential to ruthlessly split families apart, damage Arizona’s already suffering economy, and put law enforcers and civilian communities at odds with one another. Thankfully, law suits challenging SB 1070’s constitutional validity will delay its going into effect. As it is, the law encourages racial profiling and even conflicts with federal law. This issue has enflamed a long-time sentiment that border security needs immediate attention at the federal level. Nevertheless, it is essential that the immigration reform maintains the human dignity of undocumented immigrants and their families, something which SB 1070 has ignored.

Iron Man 2 Movie Review Trevor Jin, ’12

Entertainment Writer

The all-talented actor Robert Downey Jr. from Sherlock Holmes and Tropic Thunder provides yet another incredible performance as the egotistical genius, Tony Stark. After saving the world from terrorism using his invincible Iron Man technology, he has become a celebrity around the world. Unfortunately, the U.S. government and other rival weapons companies want to take him, his technology, and maybe even his fat ego, down to the ground. On top of that, his own suit is killing him. On the bright side, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) is trying to kill him with help from Hammer Industries.

It would have been a fantastic movie if the plot wasn’t so incredibly boring. It does not surpass the awesomeness of the first movie, but the incredible acting and clever punchlines make it worth seeing, as there isn’t much better to see. Something that I find incredibly strange is that Iron Man and his sidekick never actually fly away from the guy with the whips. They literally let him hit them. Also, there’s a little secret after the credits. Another benefit is that Scarlett Johansson is in the movie. Simple as that. I give it 4/5 stars.

NBA Playoff Update David Taiclet, ’11 Layout Editor

Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs is turning out to be much less exciting than Round 1. All the series, except the Boston vs. Cleveland, have been dominated by one team. In the West both the Suns and the Lakers swept their competition, the Spurs and Jazz respectively. Steve Nash is putting up outstanding numbers despite having only one good eye. Kobe and Pau look like they did last year when they won it all as they have dissected a very good Utah Jazz team. In the East, defending Conference Champions, the Orlando Magic, destroyed the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks lost by an average of almost 30 points a game.

Rajon Rondo seems to have decided to play like a hall-of-famer all the sudden. He is putting up ridiculous numbers and seems unstoppable. The Cavs have now decided to put LeBron James, an All-NBA First Team defender, on him. We will have to see if that can stop the red hot Rondo. After Game 5 it seems that Rondo may have been slowed down, but the rest of the team picked up the slack as they beat the Cavs by 32 in Cleveland to take a 3-2 advantage heading back to Boston. The rest of the series should be very entertaining, and I encourage all of you to watch the games.

NHL Playoffs Review Salvatore Revetta, ’11 Sports Writer

The 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs are now in full swing as the second round comes to an end, and the conference finals are about to begin. The Washington Capitals made an early exit this year, losing in seven games to the red hot Montreal Canadiens. After beating the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in a dominant 5-2 victory in game 7, the Canadiens will advance to the conference finals. The Boston Bruins upset the #3seed Buffalo Sabres in the first round and are now headed to a highly anticipated game 7 with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers forced game 7 with a thrilling 2-1 win on Wednesday night. The #1-seed San Jose Sharks bested the Detroit Redwings in five games in the second round. The #2-seed Chicago Blackhawks beat the Vancouver Canucks in six games and now look to face the Sharks in the conference finals. This Western Conference Final between the Blackhawks and Sharks is bound to be great. Chicago has arguably the best coach in the NHL in Joel Quenneville, and San Jose is led by Coach Todd McLellan, who had been a Redwing’s assistant coach for years. Both the Blackhawks and the Sharks have a lot of offensive firepower. The Sharks have Danny Heatley, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Pavelski while the Blackhawks look to counter with Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, and Dustin Byfuglien. Both teams have great goaltending, and it wouldn’t be surprising if this series went all seven games. In the Eastern Conference, I would watch out for the Canadiens. Coming off two game 7 wins over the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins; I believe they are the team to

beat. I would look for them to upset either the Bruins or the Flyers and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. They have a hot goalie in Jaroslav Halak who made several outstanding saves in their win on Wednesday night. They also pose quite the offensive threat with Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez, and Michael Cammalleri heating up in the playoffs. Expect to see some exciting hockey in the next few weeks.

Eminem: The Legend Returns Continued... While fans patiently waited for the promised second album, Eminem held them over with Refill. This was a re-release of the album Relapse but with seven bonus songs. These included hits like Forever and Taking my Ball. Eminem explained that these seven songs were songs he wanted his fans to hear but were not in the same style that he would be using in Recovery (his next album). Recovery, Eminem’s 7th studio album, has been voted one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Rumored guests include: Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, D12, Lil Wayne, Drake, Cashis and Lloyd Banks. On April 29, 2010 Eminem released the single Not Afraid, which, in my mind, is an instant classic. It is Eminem at his best. His lyrics have deep thought and rhythm. It is already topping the charts and continues to gain popularity. In this song, he apologizes to the fans and promises never to leave again. In addition, he mentions his last album as being inferior to previous ones by rapping “and in fact let’s be honest that last Relapse CD was ehhh, perhaps I ran those accents into the ground,” and he says he is not going back to that either. In this single, Eminem guarantees the quality of his upcoming CD. Eminem is far from done with the rapping industry. Be prepared to be blown away by Recovery.

Cards Continue Success Sam Sagartz, ’11 Content Editor

With a month of baseball completed, the Cardinals have continued their pitching domination. With one of the best staffs in the majors, the Cardinal pitchers have mowed down other teams to give St. Louis a NationalLeague-leading 20-14 record (as of May 12). In addition, some shaky starts for Redbird batters have leveled out. Pujols, expectedly, is performing well with a well above .300 average. Colby Rasmus has excelled as well, second on the team to Albert in slugging percentage and on-base-percentage. The real surprise, however, has been David Freese. With a .321 average, Freese has performed brilliantly with runners in scoring position in many clutch situations, and has compiled 22 RBI’s already. As the season progresses, Cardinals fans hope to see Matt Holliday, Ryan Ludwick, and Skip Schumaker increase their production to contribute to the continuing superiority of the pitching staff. Already through one and a half months, Penny, Garcia, Carpenter, and Wainwright all have ERAs under 3.00. Lohse has yet to obtain his first win, and struggled greatly in last night’s game giving up several runs in the fourth. One big surprise in the last few weeks has been the lack of home runs. After starting the season cranking them out constantly, the Redbird bats have cooled down. Although there are many stellar aspects of the Cards’ first month and a half, they look to improve on the few present flaws as the season progresses. Nevertheless, with thirteen 6+ run games, Cardinals fans have enjoyed the countless 25 cent drinks at On-The-Run this season, so head on over to your nearest one to pick up a delicious fruity slushy or soda.
