Letter from the Abbot February 2010

Dear Friends of Saint Louis Priory School, The Saint Louis Priory School Mothers’ Club has cordially invited all of us to attend “Mardi Gras 2010” and participate in this year’s Xanadu Auction XLI on Saturday, February 6. The event should provide a festive and exciting evening with an excellent dinner and an opportunity to bid on many outstanding items. How blessed we are to have such a faithful and dynamic organization of women who year after year put their heart and soul into Xanadu and produce a remarkable event for all members of the Abbey Family to enjoy. Certainly, Xanadu is vital for the School’s finances: its proceeds are a large part of the annual revenue of the School, revenue which is essential for the School’s operations. So the mothers have reached high and low, near and far to capture every possible item for the Auction, and their new ideas and creativity continue to amaze me. But more than this, Xanadu, to a greater degree than any other event on our campus, is the occasion for the development of community, spirit and friendships which endure through the years. Thus it is a great builder of the Abbey family, and this is its most important contribution to our life and work here. To our Chairman and Co-Chairman of “Mardi Gras 2010”, Mary Reitz and Dawn Thomas, to all who have worked so diligently and tirelessly on the Auction this year, and to all you who support it, I wish to express deep gratitude, on behalf of myself and all the monks, and on behalf of the young people and families whom we serve. May God bless all of you and your families abundantly.

Yours in the Lord,

2

From the Xanadu Chairs Dear Friends of Saint Louis Priory School, Welcome to Mardi Gras Xanadu 2010! We are thrilled to have you join us as we celebrate Mardi Gras Priory style! The proceeds of tonight’s celebration will help provide the students of Priory with the vital tuition support they need. One out of four students receives some measure of financial assistance. This 2009-10 academic year, $1.1M has been distributed, ensuring that every qualified young man who desires a Priory education has the ability to reach that goal. Over the past few months, we have spent a lot of time with these boys. We cannot imagine Priory without each and every one of the unique young men that make up its student body. A Mardi Gras celebration of this magnitude cannot be pulled off without a fabulous Xanadu Krewe (Krewe: masking and parading clubs in New Orleans who produce the parades and balls that make up the Mardi Gras celebration). Our Krewe has been working on tonight’s celebration since June, contributing hours of fun and talent to this cause which is close to all of these hardworking and enthusiastic moms’ hearts. We thank each mom who willingly saw each task through to the end: those who were there from the start and those who stepped in to help in areas where they were most needed. We continue to be amazed by your generosity. We owe so many a debt of gratitude. The Development Office staff – Julie, Carol, Nancy, Shelly and Michael – deserves a special thank you for the hours spent working on the many details associated with a project of this size. Equally important to the success of Xanadu are Martin, Dawn, Beth, Adam, Dee and our wonderful maintenance staff who are always willing to lend a hand and solve any problem we encountered. A big thank you to Andrea and Derek whose expertise was invaluable as we transitioned to new auction software. A heartfelt “thank you” to all of the alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, parents, parishioners, former Xanadu chairs and friends who generously supported us with their time, talent and auction items. Our thanks also go out to the dedicated faculty and students of Priory who helped make tonight happen, and every day make Priory an amazing school. We are grateful for the prayers and donations of time and talent from the Monastic community. The devotion of the members of the Saint Louis Abbey makes Priory the unique and outstanding home we have all come to respect and love. Above all, we give thanks to God for giving us hope and wisdom to fulfill His plan. Finally, thank you to our families who loved us enough to give us the opportunity to devote the time necessary to make Mardi Gras Xanadu 2010 a success. Get ready to roll; this is the event that will have you reminiscing throughout Lent! Wear your beads with pride and raise your paddles high for the students of Saint Louis Priory. Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!

Sincerely,

Mary Reitz and Dawn Thomas 3

Special Dedication The Xanadu 2010 Committee is proud to honor and dedicate Mardi Gras Xanadu 2010 to the ALUMNI OF SAINT LOUIS PRIORY SCHOOL who are the lasting physical embodiment of Saint Louis Priory. We are proud to be associated with the successful, spiritual and upstanding gentlemen that make up its alumni. The alumni set the tone and provide the example that Priory’s current student body look to for inspiration. Alumni, we salute you! The following quotes are from Priory graduates:

Quite simply, I became a teacher because I was influenced by some of the greatest teachers during my time at Priory. They inspired me to love learning and helped me to understand how my education could help others. –Joseph Klug ’96

Priory helped me develop a love and appreciation of learning. I had a blast, and I am a better person for going. -John Short ’98 Priory taught me to fear no one, to search for knowledge, to treasure friendships and to enjoy life. It also taught me that quidquid Latine dictum sit altum viditur. -John Nuetzel ’64

If my parents read the phrase “not living up to his potential” once in my Priory academic reports, they surely read it a couple dozen times. I cringed at the sound of those words back then, but have now come to more fully understand how important the coaxing, nudging and shoving toward excellence was that I received from my teachers at Priory. I am a work in progress...and they gave me an incredibly powerful start, for which I am ever grateful. -Tom Mulvihill ’80

Priory fosters the spiritual and intellectual development of its students within the framework of an English Benedictine education. The values which are instilled, the challenges which are presented and the friendships which are formed have lasting influences. These influences are reflected in innumerable ways, not the least of which is the unique bond which exists between alumni. My own appreciation of Priory and its influences is best expressed by the level of pride and joy which I experienced in reading our son’s acceptance letter from the school inviting him to become a member of the Class of 2016. -Cartan Sumner ’83

Mr. Gleich used to always say: “don’t simply spend time learning the process of how to make the calculations, understand and apply the concepts and it will be much more intuitive and hence, easy.” Indeed...You will not and can not appreciate the power of the abilities the Monks afford you until you are years removed from The Priory. The grind is more than worth its weight in gold. -Matthew Richeda ’89 Priory will always be known for excellence in mind, body, and spirit. However, what I really appreciate are my good friends from the Class of 1990 as well as the relationships that remain and continue to grow with all the alumni, teachers, coaches, administrators, parents, and of course, the all important monks! -John Edwards ’90

Priory taught me to use, expand, and treasure my greatest asset – my mind…..and the faculty there always impressed on me the value of treating my peers with respect. -A. Chris Bryan ’77

Alumni, we salute you! The monks and teachers of Saint Louis Priory played a key role in inspiring me to become an educator who serves youth living in economic poverty. Principal, De La Salle Middle School at St. Matthew’s -Phil Pusateri ’93

base! On the football field, Tony Finan was an idol who encouraged me to play football in college. Then, how can one forget hic, haec, hoc with Dr. Miller and Dr. Ritchie? The faculty inspired us and served as role models. Knowledge was gained in and out of the classroom, but more importantly, Priory taught me how to think and how to study. We learned life skills and thought about life’s priorities. Many hours spent in the Priory church as a school community allowed each of us the opportunity to reflect on our lives, to learn the merits and rewards of hard work and sacrifice, and to thank God and family for the advantages we all enjoyed. Finally, Priory is a special place for the lifetime friendships that were formed there. -Ken Bower ’89

What has kept Priory at the center of our lives are the monks. Always have been and always will be. -Tim Brady ’73 When the conversation turns to education, I quickly find myself answering some question about my experience at Notre Dame. In every case, I end up speaking instead about my education at Priory. For it was at Priory that I learned how to think, and it was at Priory where I learned that knowledge and the value of perspective is matched only by the joy of immersing oneself in the pursuit of both. -Rob Nolan ’84

Priory helped prepare me professionally as an Electrical Engineer, spiritually as a church lector and morally as a 9-year mentor to a young man named Travis in the Big Brother program. -Lawrence Reynolds ’77

I never really felt the impact of a Priory education until I graduated. I graduated in 1966 with Frs. Timothy and Luke and Columba Cary-Elwes at the helm. Fr. Timothy witnessed our marriage vows and baptised our 3 children. Frs. Luke and Timothy did the funeral Mass for my parents. Both of our sons graduated from Priory. In September it will be 50 years since I entered the Switzer (Stannard) House with my 15 fellow classmates. I still have a very close relationship with the monastery. Laus Tibi Domine. -Wayne A. Beugg ’66

Once you go through Priory, there are very few surprises in college. Priory provided me with the skills I needed to do well. -Cory Lenz ’06

Priory gave me an incredible foundation for life. Coach Wortham not only taught me French, but on the baseball diamond he also taught me not to feel too bad after firing a ball into center field while attempting to throw a runner out at second 5

Eagle Watching and Mass with Father Paul Soaring High You and up to 10 adult guests will be transported by private minibus from the Priory campus for an unforgettable day in the Mississippi River Bluff country. The scenic 75-minute drive to historic Clarksville, MO begins at 8:00 AM and includes a continental breakfast with coffee and mimosas. Upon reaching your destination - the winter habitat of the majestice Bald Eagle - Father Paul, Cellarer of Saint Louis Abbey, naturalist and leader of the Priory Outdoor Club, guides and instructs your group as you observe these magnificent birds in the wild. The afternoon features a leisurely 2-mile hike through the property's beautiful, unspoiled woodlands. Father Paul again serves as your knowledgeable and intrepid guide explaining the geologic origins of the area and describing the indigenous flora and fauna. En route, guests will enjoy wine and cheese and reflect together on an extraordinary experience. Eagle watching is scheduled for Sunday, January 30, 2011. Father Paul Kidner, OSB
