Adam Mills and the organising committee we thank you for your efforts during the long build up to the event.

This weekend is the payoff for all your hard work, and I encourage everyone here to show your gratitude if you run into tthe work party around the venue.

Our thanks must also go to Tweed Shire Council for their enthusiastic support of the event without which delivering an event on this scale would be next to impossible.

On behalf of Surf Life Saving NSW I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 2019 NSW Envirobank Country Surf Life Saving Championships, one of the major events on the NSW surf sports calendar and a highlight in every country competitor’s season.

After three very successful years at South West Rocks the championships have moved north to Kingscliff, and we are absolutely thrilled to be here.

I think it is fair to say that it promises to be a sensational weekend of racing for our junior, masters, and open age competitors with a broad range of events including beach, water, and surfboats to be contested throughout the two competition days.

Organising a competition on this scale is not an easy challenge and it requires the goodwill of the membership to make it happen.

To Mayor Katie Milne and the entire team we certainly appreciate your hard work and continued support. It is great to see a positive relationship between surf clubs and their local council to promote not only our core lifesaving activities but also our sporting events which are an economic boon for the area.

WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR Surf Life Saving represents a communityminded ethos and promotes friendship and a healthy lifestyle and we look forward to watching the competition with great interest.

With almost 1,500 competitors, officials, and supporters expected to attend this weekend the economic benefit to our community will be substantial.

Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club has hosted a number of high profile surf sport events in recent years, and I’m sure that they will once again do a fantastic job.

On behalf of the Tweed Shire Council I wish to extend a warm welcome to the Surf Life Saving community who have travelled here for the 2019 NSW Envirobank Country Championships.

Our region is home to some of the most spectacular beaches and coastline in NSW, and I would urge all of our visitors to make the most of their time away from competition at Kingscliff Beach by exploring all that the Tweed has to offer.

As a coastal council the beach environment is an integral part of our community and we are so proud of the volunteer lifesavers and professional lifeguards who do an extraordinary job protecting our local beaches each patrol season.

The Country Championships are always a highlight on the calendar for regional athletes, and we are pleased to be able to do our part to support this wonderful event.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of President Adam Mills and the entire organising committee for their hard work in making this event happen.

Tweed Shire Council enjoys a positive relationship with the club and we hope for this to continue into the future.

In 2018 we were pleased to officially open the $21.8 million dollar Kingscliff Foreshore Revitalisation Project and we encourage all visitors to enjoy this public facility which has been so well received by the community.

WELCOME FROM ENVIROBANK In 2018 a large number of the state’s surf clubs signed onto a powerful new fundraising opportunity which supports the community through collecting refundable drink containers under the NSW Government’s Return and Earn scheme.

Many surf clubs have found success in the scheme by forming arrangements with local schools, businesses, cafes and kiosks alike, with these community groups happy to donate their containers to such a good cause.

On behalf of Envirobank, I would like to wish a warm welcome to all clubs and members participating in the 2019 Country Championships, as well as to all those here supporting at this fantastic event.

We are proud to be the official naming rights sponsor for a second year and look forward to a great weekend of competition here on the beautiful Far North Coast.

WELCOME FROM CUDGEN HEADLAND SLSC and for us as a club, it was important that we had the support of our membership if we were to be successful in bringing the Country Championships to Kingscliff.

In recent seasons our sport coaches have been working hard to develop a “club first” culture and it’s exciting for our younger athletes in particular to have the chance to race in home waters and be provided with an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of the competitors within our branch.

Hosting an event on this scale would not be possible without Council support and I would like to thank Mayor Katie Milne and the team at Tweed Shire Council for their ongoing support.

On behalf of Cudgen Headland SLSC and our members we are delighted to welcome athletes, officials, and supporters to the 2019 NSW Envirobank Country Surf Life Saving Championships.

The support of the local Tweed Shire Council for the delivery of other major sporting events in the region is first class and clearly defines the agenda of the Council to continue to attract and support Surf Life Saving in its Shire.

It has been 16 years since we last hosted this event for NSW Country athletes back in the summer of 2003, and although an awful lot has changed in that time our passion and dedication to supporting this event has not.

I would also like to acknowledge South West Rocks SLSC who hosted the Country Championships over the last three summers.

I know our team certainly enjoyed our visits to the area and you have set a benchmark for us to aspire to in 2019 and beyond.

Since 2012 we have successfully hosted a number of large scale surf sport events including the NSW Championships and the Australian IRB Titles. The club's major events planning team provide a strong collective capability that will be used to ensure the highest level of success for the delivery of the Championships.

Our primary goal is for everyone to enjoy their weekend at our beautiful patch of paradise.

Hosting the Country Championships further increases the profile of the sport amongst our surf lifesavers and the broader community

COUNTRY ATHLETES SHINE ON REP SCENE It’s been a highly successful summer season for those athletes selected to pull on the NSW Country representative cap with multiple opportunities for these competitors to test themselves against the best surf sport athletes in Australia, and abroad.

Late last year two very strong squads were announced to contest the 2019 Trans-Tasman Series on the Central Coast in early January and the Interstate Championships, which were held at Newport Beach.

Held every two years, the Trans-Tasman Series is an exciting competition contested by the Central Coast team, Northern Region (New Zealand), and of course NSW Country.

It consists of three meet with points at a premium as athletes battle for podium places with NSW Country enjoying plenty of success over the years.

In 2019 NSW Country, on the back of several strong performances surged to their fourth straight title.

Despite coming out on top in all three meets, the 18-strong team didn’t have it all their own way with the Central Coast and New Zealand competitors never giving in.

"It was great competition this year. New Zealand really stepped it up making each race a real test. This series is always so much fun and this year the conditions were good but tough,” said the experienced Jordan White of Warilla-Barrack Point.

In January 2018 NSW Country was invited to send an Open Division team to compete at the Interstate Championships in South Australia.

That experiment was so successful that they again participated this year with youth athletes also taking part.

SLSNSW Development Officer Chiara Nowland said the new pathways now available to Country athletes will only further strengthen the sport.

“Country surf lifesavers are incredibly proud of their hometown clubs and getting the chance to wear the country colours is a rare opportunity for them.

“The more they race the better they’ll get and working on creating and sustaining these pathways is something that we are very proud of,” said Ms Nowland.

With many of the class of 2019 kick-starting their journey to the NSW Country team at this very carnival the next generation of athletes could very well be in action here at Kingscliff Beach this weekend.
