Your legacy is a
lifesaver. YOUR GUIDE TO WILLS AND BEQUESTS
Help Save lives with a gift of a lifetime in your Will
A gift to Surf Life Saving New Zealand is an investment in the future of all people who use New Zealand’s beaches. You too can become a partner in our commitment to saving lives by choosing to include Surf Life Saving in your Will. You have the opportunity to support Surf Life Saving in strengthening this role while protecting the image and maintaining the tradition of volunteer lifeguards who serve their local communities. Together, we must ensure that our future generations will benefit from the tradition of ‘in it for life’; the motto of our volunteer surf lifeguards. A bequest to the Surf Life Saving cause is an investment in its future. By including Surf Life Saving in your estate planning, your foresight and generosity will continue to protect all people who use our beaches. Due to the harsh environment in which we operate and the effect of the sun, sand and saltwater, Surf Life Saving resources are in need of constant replacement which requires funding. Bequests (gifts in a Will) extends Surf Life Saving’s capacity to deliver an increased beach safety service by funding programs including: • resources that provide an integrated lifesaving service to the community • development and training programs for our surf lifeguards • community safety initiatives 1
An Integrated Service Our volunteers constantly maintain their Lifesaving accreditations and fitness levels in order to keep our beaches safe. While our primary aim remains keeping watch between the traditional red and yellow flags, our services have grown to ensure we provide an integrated safety service for everyone who visits our beaches. These extended services include: • Call Out Squads • Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) • All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) • SurfCom Communication Network (radios) • Education Programmes • Accessible First Aid rooms • Community Safety information These additional services form an integrated lifesaving service which operates seamlessly and without interfering with the public’s enjoyment of our beaches. The demand for such equipment and its maintenance in our harsh operating environments has placed significant financial strains on the traditional fundraising methods of Surf Life Saving.
“By
leaving a Bequest in your Will to Surf Life Saving New Zealand, you will help ensure Surf Lifeguards will provide this great service on New Zealand beaches each year” Neale Ames – President Surf Life Saving NZ

Development and Training Upon joining a Surf Life Saving Club, a wide range of educational opportunities and pathways are available to members. After completing the Surf Lifeguard Award, members may choose to upskill and develop themselves in First Aid, IRB driving or becoming a Patrol Captain. Over time members can work their way up towards achieving the top lifeguard qualification we offer – the Advanced Lifeguard Award. Courses and training help develop our members’ fitness, first aid skills, leadership, confidence, teamwork, communication and ultimately, community responsibility. These skills, while primarily targeted for the beach environment, are transferable to everyday life making our communities safer and giving our members lifelong skills. As a newly qualified volunteer Surf Lifeguard, you are able to patrol on a beach and look towards developing your skills through a variety of training including:
We educate over 40,000 kids each year.
• IRB Driver and Crewman • First Aid • Leadership • VHF Radio Operators • Board Rescue training • Patrol Captain course • Instructor training • National Lifeguard School We also provide an extensive sport programme that helps us to attract and retain young people to the movement. They also maintain skills and fitness in a fun manner. 3
“Being able to apply the skills I have learnt into a real life situation and knowing I have used my training to save a mother and her child’s life is one of the most rewarding feelings” Belinda Slement – Surf Lifeguard
Where there is a Will, there is a way Bequests (gifts in a Will) are an important source of funding for Surf Life Saving in New Zealand. You could support Surf Life Saving in this way. Your Will is the only way to guarantee that people and causes you care about in your lifetime will be looked after when you have gone. Making a Will is a personal responsibility no matter how young or old you are or how much or how little you think you have to leave. Everybody should make a Will to say how they want their property and assets to be distributed. It not only ensures your personal property and assets are given to your preferred beneficiaries, rather than being delayed or held by the State, but it also allows you to choose your executors (the people who ensure your wishes are carried out). By making a Will, you can protect those people dear to you from unnecessary conflict, expense and legal strife in the event of your death. Naturally, you will wish to ensure that your family is provided for first. After this, you may decide that a gift to Surf Life Saving is a way of giving back to the community for years to come. When you include a charitable bequest in your Will, you have a lasting impact on peoples’ lives by passing on your values to future generations.
Bequests are an IMPORTANT source of funds for Surf Life Saving and every dollar raised will be used in New Zealand.

Choosing the gift of a lifetime If you have not made a Will, you should know that there are a number of different ways to make a gift in your Will. Such gifts are known as legacies or bequests. If you choose to leave a bequest to Surf Life Saving New Zealand, the following wording is suggested.
Bequests – a gift in your will: “I give and bequeath to Surf Life Saving New Zealand Incorporated, Charity registration number: CC38280 for its general purposes • the sum of $ (XXXXX)
OR
• the residue of my estate
OR
• a (X) % share of the residue of my estate
OR
• all my property comprised in (CERTIFICATE OF TITLE REFERENCE) and situated at (ADDRESS OF THE PROPERTY) free of all charges. If any of my nominated beneficiaries predecease me, the bequest shall not fail but I give the share of my deceased beneficiary to Surf Life Saving New Zealand Incorporated and I declare that the receipt and acknowledgement in writing of the Chairman, President, Chief Executive or authorised officer of Surf Life Saving New Zealand Incorporated shall be sufficient discharge to my Executors for my bequest”
Amending your Will If you already have a Will and you would like to make a simple addition, you may add a Codicil to your existing Will. A Codicil is a legal term for a document that forms part of your Will. If you make a Codicil, you would use it as if you were writing a new Will. 5
Your gift will serve as a lasting legacy to your personal support of Surf Life Saving and will be appreciated by all those who enjoy a day at the beach. In confidence, please advise us of your preferred next step:
