Music Is The Message

101 Apparel was created by designer Eric Crandell in 2006 as a way to seamlessly bridge the gap between art, music, and fashion. As Ubiquity Records Art Director for many years he applied his skills in designing album covers, silk screens and was the chief creative force for Ubiquity’s lucrative apparel line. Now, 101 Apparel is the next paradigm shift in aesthetic innovation, authenticity and imagination in fashion design. When 101 Apparel began in 2006 the response was overwhelming and continues unabated to this day; select premium retailers from all over the globe from New York, Paris, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Madrid stock 101 Apparel designs.101 Apparel’s success is due to the unparalleled work ethic, taste making intuition, and ear to the ground methods that have become the hallmark of the 101 Apparel brand. 101 Apparel takes inspiration from all the musical styles across the globe; from afro beat to disco, Brazilian samba, bossa nova, and Tropicalia, to the vast encyclopedia of electronic music, hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae and jazz, and everything else that falls in between. If fashion could be music 101 Apparel is that music. A quick view of the 101 Apparel portfolio confirms for veterans and novices alike that the knowledge displayed when it comes to music, culture, and design is both vast and deep. Never afraid to take calculated risks to keep the apparel line moving forward, we never rest on our achievements. 101 Apparel takes inspiration from various genres and cultures, showing influences from classic designers such as the work of Alexander Girard, Milton Glaser, Reid Miles and Ray Eames. Music and design has a long history of cross referencing conceptual ideas into artistic forms and 101 Apparel applies that design history every step of the way. 101 Apparel is where sound and vision converge into one seamless package. After years of absorbing the music and design aesthetic in anything from an old dusty latin funk 45, to a European soundtrack, to an early 12’ inch dance classic, all these influences create something, vital, unique and enduring. Now, 101 Apparel has been working with the cream of the crop DJ’s, artists and producers to fuse the music and the designs into a unique artistic document. We are currently undertaking doing a limited edition “101 Apparel Artists Series” where we collaborate with our favorite artists and ask them to do a mix CD of exclusive material for 101 Apparel. These are one of a kind mixes that come with a specially designed shirt that expresses the artists’style while keeping the 101 legacy intact. Currently the collaborations include an exclusive mix by producer-artist-DJ, Nightmares on Wax (funk, soul, hip hop breaks). A collaboration with Wax Poetics that brought us world renowned DJ and collect ors Kon and Amir ( this mix focuses on rare disco and Latin). An exclusive mix by Dj-producer Lono (Chicago/NYC) entitled a “Disco Unusual Social Club Mix”. A mix and shirt with producer, DJ, and artist, Quantic (Tru-Thoughts). An exclusive mix and shirt with the modern funk ambassador Dam Funk (Stones Throw). A design collaboration with the legendary latin label Fania Records. A shirt paying tribute to Tony Allen ( Fela Kuti’s drummer) with an exclusive mix of unreleased Tony Allen tracks by DJ Rich Medina. This past season we were happy to release is a shirt and DJ mix by up and coming producer and musician Chico Mann (Wax Poetics Records) and a special collaboration shirt and DJ mix by Jeedo (Waajeed, Bling 47). Next in line this season is a collaboration with one of our favorite Dj’s & Producers - DJ Spinna entitled “Future Shock”. Stay tuned for much more to come!

Before producing records, Jeedo aka “Waajeed” as a producer Waajeed began comparatively late (2000), but before long had landed a handful of tracks on the group’s Trinity (Past, Present and Future) album. According to Waajeed, his first MPC had previously belonged to J Dilla. After the hardware was broken by Questlove, J Dilla said that Waajeed could keep it if he could fix it. His first beats were made on that very same MPC after managing to correct the problem. Waajeed’s productions have led to him working with some of the industry’s most respected artists such as Roy Ayers, Dwele,Radiohead plus much more. BLACK

THE SCIENTIST (GREENSLEEVES RECORDS, TUFF GONG)

DESIGN: SCIENTIST MEETS THE SPACE INVADERS The Scientist is a legendary dub producer from Kingston, Jamaica and is one of the original creative forces behind dub music who was taught the tools of the trade by the master himself, King Tubby. The name Scientist was given to him by Tubby when he saw his forward thinking technical prowess in the recording studio when he was just a teenager. Since then the name Scientist is synonymous with hard hitting spacy dub that will shake your subwoofers down to the foundation. Scientist meets the Space Invaders is a classic record with a scifi theme that has inspired countless of dub artists along with many electronic music producers. DESIGN: BEAT TAPE The beat/mix tape is one of the first forms of communication between the DJ and his audience that went beyond the late nights of the club scene. Originally tapes were exclusive to partygoers, other DJ’s , those ‘in the know’ and served as a musical education while at the same time kept the party going in your ear. Before DJ and scene magazine playlists, the beat tape was the only way to know what the newest tracks/remixes and blends were popping things off in the club and what the DJ was currently vibing out to. This tradition was set off by luminaries like Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambataa to promote the club nights they were playing at and as a way to spread the word of this new music called “hip-hop”

DESIGN: CUT & PASTE The Cut and Paste method goes back to the early Dada art movement where words were used to create a hybrid collage of text and image ; a technique which has made the rounds from the beatniks, to the surrealists, to the avant garde art and design scene and finally found its way into early hip-hop and dance music. Now, cut and paste concepts are the foundation for all digital media and art creation, from making beats on software, to video art, to photography, design and beyond. This shirt pays homage to that creativity and innovation that comes from putting together different concepts, images, text and making them a unique art document.

El Ritmo de Los Tropics (“Rhythms of the Tropics”) pays tribute to the music that originated within the tropics, from Brazil to Colombia, Cape Verde to Ethiopia, from Congo to Ghana and everything in between. The sounds emitted from that sweltering humid climate are an infectious and intoxicating hybrid of deep African, Latin, and Middle Eastern rhythms that have become an inspiration to modern producers today. Whether’s it’s salsa, cumbia, batucada, or afro caribbean highlife, tropical rhythms are an essential foundation and influence on producers, collectors and music curios. LT. BLUE HEATHER

DESIGN: FUNKY 45 It’s no secret that the “Funky 45” is the foundational medium for DJ’s and producers; it’s where novices get separated from the supreme archeologists in the record collecting world. With only two songs on a 45 bands knew they had to make it count so they went all out and that’s why the best tracks are on that small slab of wax. Finding those 45’s is a talent that is given to few, it takes time as anyone who has ever gone through thousands of them in a dusty basement knows, and it takes massive knowledge to pick the best. We decided to pay tribute to the funky 45 with no musical boundaries to get in the way; from jazz to funk, disco to latin, cosmic to soul music, this is about how the 45 is where it’s at for rarity, quality and versatility.

DESIGN: RECORD COLLECTOR Record Collectors are the archivists and archaeologists of sound that have influenced countless artists and culture simply by unearthing music that would have not been heard by the general public. When you listen to great musicians and producers talk about what made them create, it always involves someone putting a record (or instrument) into their hand that changed their life. At 101 Apparel, records have been a primary creative force in design, inspired by those early experiences dancing to records, collecting and listening to them, being stimulated to create by the sounds contained within and being motivated to seek out new ones.

Soundwaves is a unique design with a futuristic aesthetic inspired by the science of sound. Vibration patterns are what creates sound waves and we wanted a design that takes that idea and makes it a visual entity of its own. This shirt is for the audio scientists, technology heads, visual thinkers and those that dig on the building blocks of music and sound. This design has the text “Sound Waves” and “Universal Rhythm” underneath. NAVY

The Roots of Dub pays tribute to the artists that brought dub music onto the table when producers wanted to make the reggae tracks they were making a more interesting affair. The originators include but are not limited to King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Errol Thompson. The influence that dub music and it’s studio techniques have had on modern music is undeniable. Everything from post punk to disco, from dubstep to house has taken dub as it’s influence and crafted it into something lasting and unique. The heavy use of tape loops and delay has given dub and it’s acolytes an unmistakable allure and sound.

Enoch Light’s “Vibrations” is a seminal space-age bachelor record that is replete with heavy sci-fi organs, xylophone and bongos that can only be played at late night cocktail parties in a fully Eames designed home. This design is actually inspired by the record cover, an art piece with a decidedly retro-space age aesthetic that is perfect for the vintage design head. This shirt has the text “Vibrations” stacked on top of each other while the font gives the optical illusion of vibration itself. 101 APPAREL: PAST SEASON FAVORITES

DESIGN: ACID HOUSE Acid House is the sound of the 80s Chicago underground taken to a whole new level of sonic innovation by the addition of the Roland TB 303 into the house producers repertoire. It was set off by the Chicago pioneers Phuture with “Acid Trax”; a seminal slice of underground house that was played by Ron Hardy at the Music Box and was picked up by the DJ’s at the legendary Hacienda in Manchester. This design is a view into past with an eye towards the future and is essential for underground heads who lived through that day and for those who are just discovering that sound now. The shirt has the text “Acid House” with the numbers “303” in small lettering inside the text.

DESIGN: BREAK BEATS If one was forced to name the foundation of urban dance music there is no doubt that ‘break beats’ are the fundamental ingredient. When hip-hop djs like Kool Herc were cutting up funk 45s in the late 70s and extending the break so that dancers would have more room to flash their moves little did they know they were setting the template for future generations of DJ’s and dancers. Out of this generation two different strands of break beats were created. This design pays tribute to the ‘break beat’ by using text in a ‘broken’ font, and also features two drumsticks at the bottom. This one appeals to the DJ’s, producers, dancers, and musicians or for those who have ever gotten down to a break beat !

DESIGN: BASEMENT SOUL Producers and musicians have always been stuck in the strangest places trying to make a beat or compose an album. Whether it be a grimy basement, a lonely room, or an overflowing garage, you have to make it wherever you can. This basement soul design is about that experience, creating music as an underground producer or an unknown musician in the direst of circumstances. Everyone knows that some of the best music made has been done when its just for the love of the music, not necessarily tied to the biggest studio and the flashiest producer. Which is why music lovers and collectors are always seeking out those first recordings of an artist as they tend to have that “sound” that evokes that raw soul and power.

DESIGN: BRING THE NOISE “Bring the Noise” is the classic track by Public Enemy that shook car speakers, dancefloors and turned hip-hop on it’s head. Punctuated by Chuck D’s deft lyrical delivery and the Bomb Squad’s impeccable production that made use of James Brown and industrial noise samples; it represents not only a milestone in hip-hop, but is widely recognized as one of the greatest songs of all time. It is rare that a song not only defines an era in music-- but also is a call to arms to other artists to elevate their game. And that ‘s exactly what Chuck D and Flavor Flav were saying with “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Down”; it was about expanding hip hop consciousness through addressing society ills directly aka ‘Bring the Noise’.

101 APPAREL: PAST SEASON FAVORITES

DESIGN: DIRTY OLD SOUL CRATES If you have ever gone searching for records especially of the vintage variety, you know that you have to go through dusty basements, moldy covers, and dirty stanky crates to get the really good stuff that everyone else is seeking. This all pays off in rare gems in the end but you have to put the work in to get there. When it comes to soul music every collector and DJ knows that the first rate records were all released on 45 which makes the job of finding them that much more difficult. Going through moldy crates to find ‘albums’ is one thing, but 7 inches are small and easily lost making it a very tedious activity to sort through thousands of them in the hope of finding those rare lost classics.

DESIGN: DISCO POWER Disco never died. It has been a shaping force of urban music even when it was forced underground by the record executives and mainstream audiences who were threatened by its association with Black, Latino and hedonist culture. Even when it did go ‘underground’ in the early 80s it still reared its head in many contexts; Michael Jackson used it all throughout his seminal albums, post punk appropriated it for its own uses, Larry Levan was still playing it, it was being discovered in Ibiza and went onto become an influence on house and techno which became global forces in music. That’s the power of disco; the ability to channel the dreams and desires of disaffected urban youth and filter it through a hypnotic and infectious groove.

DESIGN: IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS RHYTHM “In the Beginning There was Rhythm” is a seminal track by the all female British post-punk band The Slits that combined punk, funk, reggae and disco into a coherent and gripping statement on how rhythm is the foundation of life and sound. Taking cues from close friends The Clash who were already knee deep in experimentation with reggae and dub, they broke boundaries by allowing black musical forms to seep into punk rock structures. Indeed, this syncretic approach came to have a profound effect on post punk artists like Liquid Liquid and A Certain Ratio who started to use African polyrhythms into their sound or conversely black artists like ESG who used ‘punky’ guitar sounds to accentuate their natural approach to funk.

DESIGN: I’LL HOUSE YOU “I’ll House You” is a track written by the Jungle Brothers and produced by Todd Terry that combined hip-hop and house and forged it into one seamless sound. It became a massive tune on the dancefloor and radio and shared it’s popularity with the colossal banger “It Takes Two” by Rob Base and Dj Ez-Rock. At a time when house was going in its own direction and was seen as opposed to hip-hop values by rap artists and viceversa, hip-house was a short time in history where both genres, scenes and cultures enjoyed some solidarity. This was lost for the most part throughout the 90s where you rarely heard house and hip-hop played on the same dancefloor but has come back in the last few years

DESIGN: LET THE MUSIC PLAY “Let The Music Play” is a dance classic released in 1983 by Shannon, a female vocalist from Washington DC who ushered in the popularity of the “freestyle” genre, a style of music that combined Latin American rhythms and a heavy disco influence with infectious pop hooks. Its the sound of the clubs in the mid 80’s, your friend’s weddings and BBQ’s, and the sub-woofers blaring out of a G-ride posted at the local burger spot. The significance of this track is not only that it birthed “freestyle”, but also because it transcended the genre which it was a part of and was a massive hit on the hip-hop, dance music, and pop radio stations; a true multi-cultural phenomenon of its time.

DESIGN: LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT BEAT Afrika Bambaata was a musical force of nature. His influence on DJ’s and hip hop culture in general cannot be overstated; in many ways he created the template for what modern DJ’s are today. He coined the term “hip-hop”, invented electro boogie, turntablism, break beat sets, and helped spread a message of positivity within hip-hop culture. When he chose the famous sample by Kraftwerk to invent the track “Planet Rock”, a record that went gold, he single handedly put break dancing and sampling on the international map. “Looking for the Perfect Beat” is an electro-boogie classic that has been sampled countless times and influenced a bevy of artists and DJ’s.

DESIGN: SOUL POWER 74 Soul Power 74 is a timeless tune that was adapted from the Godfather of Soul himself, Mr. James Brown. After the original was recorded, his main man Mace-o did an instrumental version that amounted to a re-edit with additional dubbed out horns amongst other studio trickery. Soul Power 74 to this day is an official soul banger that is played in every club from Detroit to Tokyo. DESIGN: SURE SHOT If you had MTV in 90s there was no way you didn’t see the classic “Sure Shot” video directed by Spike Jones and written by the one and only Beastie Boys. “Sure Shot” was played everywhere from the radio, to the park, to the club, to your walkman and confirmed the continued relevance of the Beastie Boys artistry. It was the hit single off “Ill Communication”; an album which reset the parameters of hip hop by infusing guitars, live drums, samples and an ironic playful vibe that both came off as freshly innovative and yet wholly working within the hip-hop tradition. “Sure Shot” remains one of the classic recordings of the 90s; a timeless and pioneering work that will be remembered for decades to come.

This one is a major keeper and is sure to inspire imitators.

DESIGN: THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” is a poem by writermusician Gil Scott Heron, an influential activist who changed the world with his poetry and music. In a time when revolutions in the US and abroad were being shown on television to induce fear in the public eye, Gil Scott came out as an opponent to this bias of the media’s coverage. The logic of Gil Scott Heron’s message, namely that the media will never accurately represent the voice of the people continues unabated to this day. This design pays respect to Gil Scott’s prescient message on the voice of the people, the media’s distortion of that voice and the government who profitsfrom it.

DESIGN: UPTOWN BOOGIE “Boogie” is such a special sound; it’s soulful, groovy music influenced by elements of disco, R&B, soul and electro funk. After disco was on the downturn in the mainstream in the early 80s there emerged a slew of artists who were doing a more ‘modern funk’ influenced take on disco. We have been working with artists on this vibe for some time now; you can check our shirt and exclusive mix that we did with Dam Funk for more in this vein. For this shirt we wanted to bring together NYC club culture and boogie together into one seamless package. This one takes the text “Uptown Boogie” and infuses it with the designs of NYC buildings inside the fonts to give it a unique flair.
