2010 SEASON PREVIEW/SOUTHLAND PRESEASON TEAMS AND POLLS With seven All-Southland Conference performers returning from last season’s Southland Conference Tournament Championship team, the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team heads into 2010 with high hopes. Coming off their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the Lady Lions figure to be one of the top contenders for the Southland Conference title. Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle is excited about the team’s prospects heading into the upcoming season. “With the success of last season, we have a lot of positives to build on heading into 2010,” Hornbuckle commented. “We have a great deal of experience returning and we feel that we can count on our veterans to set the tone heading into the season. “We have a very talented incoming class of newcomers and we’re looking forward to getting them ingrained in the Southeastern soccer culture,” Hornbuckle continued. “The Southland Conference race is going to be a battle again this year and we’ll have to be ready each and every time out.” The Lady Lions are coming off a secondplace finish in the Southland Conference standings in 2009. In addition to on-field talents, Hornbuckle credited strong senior leadership for the team’s success. This season, the team features another experienced senior group in All-Southland performers Natalie Santana, Brittany Prieto and Nicole Brannigan. “Our seniors provide us with fantastic leadership on and off the field,” Hornbuckle said. “Natalie, Brittany and Nicole all provide wonderful examples for our teammates. Our senior class is a tremendously tight-knit group.” Brannigan and Prieto combine with fellow All-Southland defender Kyle MacIntosh to give Southeastern a veteran presence in the defensive backfield. Last year, the Lady Lions set or matched league single-season records for shutouts (13), fewest goals allowed (13) and lowest goals against average (0.64). Hornbuckle is looking forward to mixing in several talented newcomers with his veteran defensive corps. “We’re very fortunate to have our defensive corps return and to have continuity in the back,” Hornbuckle said. “Kyle, Nicole and Brittany know each other’s tendencies and habits. Their chemistry is very beneficial for us in tight matches.

“Our leadership in the back is beneficial for the entire team,” Hornbuckle added. “They provide tremendous support for our midfield and up top. We have some different options in the back with our newcomers. Lauren Crawford, Jaci Teresinski, Shanyce Shaw and Kelsey Salcido all could fill roles defensively for us.” Anchoring the defensive efforts will be 2009 first team All-Southland goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus. The San Leandro, Calif. native posted the best statistical season by a goalkeeper in Southeastern history, setting single-season conference records for lowest goals against average (0.64) and shutouts (12). Bockhaus saved her best performance for the Southland Conference Tournament, earning MVP honors after shutting out Stephen F. Austin and Texas State. Hornbuckle has a lot of faith in his junior net minder and expects Bockhaus to remain a force in goal. “Lacey continues to work hard to improve her game,” Hornbuckle said. “She really works hard to be the best for her team and developed into a fantastic leader as a sophomore. To have someone of her talents in goal is a huge benefit heading into the season.” Offensively, Southeastern returns three of its four top scorers from last season’s squad, which scored a Southland-high 56 goals – two off the single-season school and league records. Leading the way is Santana, who has controlled the midfield and ran the Lady Lion attack for the past three seasons. Five off the school record for career assists, Santana led the Southland Conference in assists for the second straight year with 10 assists to go with nine goals in 2009. Sophomores Lauren Stillians and Kerry McWhirter are expected to continue to steadily improve while flanking Santana. Southeastern returns 2009’s top Division I freshman scoring tandem in Maiya Cooper and Karly Dagys up top. Cooper led the team with 14 goals last season, scoring in seven consecutive matches during her initial campaign in Hammond. A first team All-Southland and All-Louisiana pick, as well as the Louisiana Freshman of the Year, Cooper also scored a goal in Southeastern’s first round contest at No. 6 Florida State. An honorable mention All-Southland and All-Louisiana selection, Dagys was third on the team with eight goals in 2009, despite missing three matches during the season. Tournament final solidified a 2-0 victory over Texas State. Hornbuckle is confident in his team’s offensive attack heading into 2010. “We have an excellent tandem of youthful experience in Maiya and Karly,” Hornbuckle stated. “They complement each other very well. We have the versatility to show some different looks offensively and add many players into the mix.” The Lady Lions open the 2010 season on Aug. 20, hosting Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. Other non-conference home matches include contests versus Southern Miss (Aug. 24), Southern (Sept. 5), Louisiana-Monroe (Sept. 17), Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept. 19) and Grambling (Sept. 24). HEAD COACH BLAKE HORNBUCKLE

Head Coach Blake Hornbuckle 13th Year at Southeastern School Career Record: 129-78-25 Overall Career Record: 139-85-27 Maryville (Tenn.) College ‘91

Since taking over as head women's soccer coach in 1998, Blake Hornbuckle has kept Southeastern at a model of consistency, not just in the Southland Conference but in the state of Louisiana. A four-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and two-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the school's alltime leader in victories with 129, Hornbuckle has guided Southeastern to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, a pair of Southland Conference tournament title, four regular-season crowns and seven SLC Tournament championship game appearances. Hornbuckle took over a program that had compiled a 15-40 record before his arrival and has helped Southeastern up their all-time mark to above the .500 mark at 144-118-23. Hornbuckle has a 129-78-23 record in 12 seasons as the Lady Lion head coach. In the past nine seasons, the Lady Lions have won 84 matches, including a school-record 15 wins in 2003, when the Lady Lions earned their second straight Southland Conference regular season title and third in the last five seasons. After leading the 2003 squad to a 15-2-4 record and a undefeated 90-3 SLC mark, Hornbuckle was named LSWA Coach of the Year for a third time. Hornbuckle guided the Lady Lions to a 12-win season in 2002. In 2006, he was named SLC Coach of the Year, guiding the team to an 11-4-4 record and 5-0-3 league mark. The Lady Lions' 2006 league title was its fourth regular season championship in school history. In 2009, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA College Cup with Hornbuckle again earning LSWA Coach of the Year honors. Hornbuckle's success has been evident on the field as he has produced 81 allconference players, 51 All-Louisiana selections, three conference and three Louisiana players-of-the-year, five conference newcomer-of-the-year, five Louisiana newcomer-of-theyear, three SLC freshman-of-the year and four Louisiana freshmen-of-the-year athletes. Among the players under his tutelage were CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-District selection Kim Kwolek, who was named the 1999 recipient of the F.L. McDonald Academic Scholarship, given to the female student-athlete in the Southland Conference with the highest grade point average. In 2009, Dana Mayer earned the F.L. McDonald Post Graduate Scholarship and received the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence. In the past three seasons, Southeastern has placed six student-athletes on the NSCAA AllSouth Region Scholar teams and earned Team Academic and Ethics Awards in recent seasons.

10

In 2003, forward Kendra Oney became the first player in Southland Conference history to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine All-Central Region Team and was selected the SLC Player of the Year. In addition, midfielder Alexis Tramacchi was named the SLC Women's Soccer StudentAthlete of the Year. In 2006, Kari Yost was named both Southland Conference Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. Mayer earned Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2009. In his first season as head coach, Hornbuckle took the Lady Lions to the SLC Championship Game where they defeated host Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, to cap an 8-10-2 campaign. For his efforts, Hornbuckle was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year. The 1999 squad posted a 7-2-3 mark in SLC games during the season and won the conference's regular-season title for the first time in school history. Along the way to 11 victories, Hornbuckle's crew ripped off a 13-game unbeaten streak (9-0-4), which was fifth-best in the nation, and finished with a final record of 11-4-5. For his leadership, Hornbuckle was named as the 1999 Coach of the Year by both the LSWA and the Southland Conference. The Lady Lions continued their winning ways in 2000, establishing a school record for wins (13). SOUTHEASTERN SOCCER COMPLEX

The Southeastern Soccer Complex, opened in 2002, has become one of the finest facilities in the region.

Opened in 2002, the Southeastern Soccer Complex provides the Lady Lions with one of the top facilities in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. Located on the university’s North Campus, the 1,000-seat facility features a digital LED scoreboard and a top-of-the-line sound system. In addition to being used for Southeastern matches and practices, the Southeastern Soccer Complex also hosts several camps throughout the area. The field has also given the Lady Lions a definite “home-field” advantage, as Southeastern has recorded a 44-21-9 record in its first eight seasons playing at the facility.

One of the nicer features is the grassy berm located on the left side of the Southeastern Soccer Complex entrance. During Lady Lion home games, Southeastern students and fans are known to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the view from the berm. Plans for adding a second berm on the right side are in place. In its inaugural season, the Southeastern Soccer Complex played host to the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament, marking the first time Southeastern had hosted a SLC postseason event. Southeastern also served as the host site for the 2004 and 2005 SLC Tournaments.

In recent years, one of the priorities of Southeastern Athletics has been the improvement and ren“The opening of the Southeastern Soccer Complex ovation of the teams’ facilities. The Southeastern Soccer was a big step in the right direction for our program,” head Complex is a prime example of that priority. In 2004, a conwomen’s soccer coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “The field crete entrance way has been laid, as well as a concrete has a great root system and is one of the better playing pad for the benches and press row area. surfaces in the area. With a few added amenities, we will have a first-class facility that the community and university can enjoy, that provides a showcase for North Campus and aids the future of our program.” The newest additions to the facility are on-line for the 2009 season. A new permanent structure that covers the benches and press area, as well as serves as a film tower has been added.
