SLU REACHES FOR NEW HEIGHTS IN 2018 Armed with a solid veteran corps and an influx of talented newcomers, the 2018 Southeastern Louisiana softball team poised to take another step forward in their third season under head coach Rick Fremin. After finishing near the bottom of the league in Fremin’s debut campaign, SLU doubled their league win total in year two and narrowly missed returning to the Southland Conference Tournament.

Fremin’s squad seems poised to take another big step forward in the coming season. The Lady Lions return seven positional starters and all but one member of the 2017 pitching staff. With 18 letterwinners returning and several newcomers set to make immediate positive impacts, SLU has raised expectations heading into the upcoming campaign. “We feel good about where we’re at heading into the season after a productive fall,” Fremin commented. “We were able to get everyone playing time during the fall and were able to see our players react well in different situations. We feel that the combination of having veterans that are comfortable in our system and newcomers who are raising our overall level of play, that we’ll have a more well-balanced attack that better fits our style.” One of the primary keys to success for the Lady Lions will be production in the circle. Seniors Lacey Hill (9-9, 3.56 ERA in 2017) and Rachel Hayes (7-8, 3.80 ERA) are the top returners for Southeastern, while sophomore Tanner Wright (3-2, 3.88 ERA), sophomore Alley McDonald (3-4, 5.25 ERA, 1 save), sophomore Ali McCoy (2-0, 4.40 ERA) and junior Caitlyn VanHemelryck (0-3, 5.48 ERA) also are back. Freshman Shelby Sitzman will further bolster the staff, which will be overseen by first-year assistant coach Brooke Boening. “Brooke did an excellent job with the staff in the fall and we’re expecting to see improvements in the circle this season,” Fremin said. “We feel Rachel and Lacey will be more confident and consistent with a year of Division I softball experience. We go into the season with the expectations that Alley will step up as our third starter with Tanner, Ali and Shelby as our main arms out of the bullpen. We showed a lot of improvement as a staff this fall in terms of our ability to manage the game and we’re hopeful to see that growth continue into the season.” One of the more intriguing position battles of the preseason and of non-conference play will be to see who fills the catching position. While junior returner Whitney Sullivan is out injured, a pair of veterans – senior Carlie Whittington and sophomore Brennan Bourgeois – and the freshman duo of Ella Manzer and Shaye Tredinich will all vie for playing time behind the dish. “Our two freshman picked up our system quickly this fall,” Fremin stated. “They both have good size and strong arms and give us an added dimension offensively. Carlie just has a knack for getting on base and works with our staff well. Brennan saw a lot of time as a freshman and we expect her to continue to improve with more experience. All four will have the opportunity to show what they can do.” Senior Mahalia Gibson and junior Jaquelyn Ramon are the top returners on the infield for SLU. Gibson was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year after batting .317 with 10 dou-

bles, five triples, three home runs and 36 RBI in her debut season in Hammond. Ramon is already the school’s career leader with 86 stolen bases in her first two seasons. The speedy leadoff hitter and starting shortstop from Channelview, Texas led the Southland and ranked fifth nationally with 54 stolen bases as a sophomore to go with a .320 batting average and a team-high 40 runs. A pair of newcomers are expected to bolster the infield and the middle of the order for Southeastern. After impressive fall showings, junior Rebecca Skains and freshman Madison Watson have the inside track on the first and third base jobs, respectively, heading into the spring. “We’re deeper on the infield than we’ve been the previous couple of years,” Fremin said. “Rebecca brings a lot to her table with her athleticism and her holding down first base give us a lot of options with what we can do. In addition to Ramon, Mahalia and Madison, we also have (senior) Alli Daigle, (senior) Grace DeLee, (sophomore) Mattie Ort and McCoy all back. We have confidence in all of those players’ abilities. Production at the plate is what’s going to primarily determine playing time on the infield.” Two-thirds of the Southeastern starting outfield returns in 2018, highlighted by three-time All-Southland Conference senior left fielder Kinsey Nichols. The Alvin, Texas native was second in the Southland with a .393 batting average in 2017. Senior centerfielder Maddie Edmonston also returns after finishing second in the Southland with 33 stolen bases in her first season as a Lady Lion. While 2017 starting right fielder Kalyn Watts transferred to UL Lafayette, Fremin believes he has several excellent options to fill her spot. “We were extremely strong defensively in the outfield a season ago and we see that continuing this season,” Fremin said. “Kinsey is a dynamic all-around player for us both at the plate and in the field for us. She’s had some tough luck with injuries the last couple of years due in large part to how hard she plays, so we’re hopeful to see what she can do with a full season of good health. Maddie can really run down balls in center and we expect more of the same from her as a senior. “We have several options in right field,” Fremin added. “(Senior) Peyton Sutton has a lot of experience and is a game-changer with her speed. We were really impressed with (freshman) Madisen Blackford’s transition from behind the plate to the outfield. She’s got a great arm and has a lot of athletic ability. (Sophomore) Rae’Shaun Malancon will join us for preseason practice and comes in with a power bat and a lot of raw talent. Outfield is another area where we feel we’re much deeper than what we’ve been.” Southeastern will open the 2018 season by hosting Lion Classic I and II at North Oak Park. The Lady Lions will open Lion Classic I by hosting Howard at 3 p.m. on Feb. 9 in a season-opening tournament that will see SLU also face Kennesaw State and Arkansas. Omaha, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Belmont and Detroit will be Southeastern’s opponents during Lion Classic II, scheduled for Feb. 16-18.

2018 SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA SOFTBALL Other non-conference visitors to Hammond this fall include Louisiana Tech (Feb. 13), Ole Miss (March 14), Alcorn State (March 20), UL Lafayette (April 11) and Southern (April 24). Southeastern also has two non-conference road tournaments on the 2018 slate. The Lady Lions will face UL Lafayette, UMBC, North Florida and Memphis during the Ragin’ Cajun Classic on Feb. 22-24 in Lafayette. SLU will face Creighton, Missouri and Drake at the Mizzou Tournament in Columbia, Missouri on March 2-3. The Lady Lions will also travel to face non-conference foes Mississippi State (Feb. 20), Southern Miss (March 6), ULM (April 3) and Jackson State (April 17). SLU opens Southland Conference play at home, hosting Abilene Christian for a three-game series at North Oak Park on March 9-10. Other home league series for the Lady Lions include Nicholls (March 23-24), Houston Baptist (April 6-7) and Central Arkansas (April 20-21). Southeastern travels to face Southland foes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (March 16-17), Lamar (March 30-31), Northwestern State (April 13-14), Sam Houston State (April 27-28) and McNeese (May 4-5). The top eight teams in the league standings will advance to the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 9-11 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

“We want to continue moving forward and we expect to be in the postseason,” Fremin said. “We’re pleased with where we’re at with our talent level on the field. We also should benefit from great senior leadership and much-improved team chemistry. If our pitching progresses as we hope and we’re able to stay healthy, we can take some big strides in 2018.”

Third Year at Southeastern Louisiana • Belhaven, 1999 2012. During his tenure, Fremin’s teams won games over Ole Miss, Arkansas, Houston and Texas Tech among others. Fremin was also a member of the NCAA Central Regional Advisory Committee from 2012-14.

Rick Fremin is in his third season as the Southeastern Louisiana University head softball coach. Fremin became the sixth head coach in program history on July 22, 2015. The 2017 Lions finished tied for the national lead with 162 stolen bases and ranked second in Division I with 2.95 stolen bases per game. Sophomore Jaquelyn Ramon led the Southland Conference and ranked fifth nationally with 54 stolen bases. Junior Mahalia Gibson became the first Lady Lion to earn Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year honors. Gibson and junior Kinsey Nichols were both named to the AllSouthland Conference and All-Louisiana teams. Southeastern also placed a school-record five student-athletes on the NFCA All-American Scholar Team, as junior Grace DeLee, senior Mychal Truxillo, senior Kasey Nielson, junior Maddie Edmonston and junior Alli Daigle. In his first season with Southeastern, Fremin’s 2016 squad finished atop NCAA Division I with 172 stolen bases, breaking the previous school record by over a 100 steals. Senior Katie Lacour was the national leader with 58 stolen bases, earning the Golden Shoe Award, All-Louisiana and AllSouthland honors. Lacour was joined on the All-Southland team by sophomore Kinsey Nichols. Lacour batted .423 as a senior under Fremin. Her .425 career batting average was a Southland Conference career record. Fremin, a Belle Chasse, Louisiana native came to Hammond after spending the previous five seasons at Jackson State. Fremin led JSU to three Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Division championships – the first three in school history. During his five years in Jackson, Fremin has led the Tigers to 137 victories, including a 67-16 record in league contests. In his first season at Jackson State, he led his team to the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He was named the 2014 SWAC Coach of the Year and helped JSU set 70 school records during his five years at JSU. Fremin’s squad led the nation with 163 stolen bases in

Prior to his time at Jackson State, Fremin spent five seasons at Belhaven University, accumulating a 186-95 record. His 2010 squad made the program’s first NAIA National Tournament appearance and finished the season ranked sixth in the final national poll. During his time with the Blazers, he coached eight NAIA All-Americans. Fremin was an assistant coach at Millsaps in 2005, helping the Majors to a SCAC West Division championship. Fremin’s teams have also consistently excelled in the classroom, being recognized by the NFCA with Academic AllAmerican team honors on eight different occasions. Fremin started his coaching career at his alma mater Belle Chasse High School, where he was named District 11-3A Coach of the Year twice after leading BCHS to district titles in each of his two seasons at the helm. The 1995 Belle Chasse graduate was a four-year letterman in football, baseball, and golf at BCHS. A 2007 inductee in the Belhaven Sports Hall of Fame, Fremin was a three-year team captain and quarterback for the Blazers. Fremin earned his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Belhaven in 1999 and earned his master’s in sports science from Jackson State in 2013. Fremin and his wife, Alana, are the parents of two daughters, Brelan and Cambre. Second Year at Southeastern Louisiana • South Alabama, 2014 Burton came to Hammond after most serving as the head coach at Elizabeth City State University. The Biloxi, Mississippi native also has coaching stints at Marion Military Institute, Alabama Southern Community College, Mary G. Montgomery High School and the Southern Spirit 14U travel ball team.

Kristy Burton is in her second season on the Southeastern Louisiana softball staff as an assistant coach on head coach Rick Fremin’s staff.

Her playing career included stints at Limestone College and South Carolina-Lancaster. She earned her degree from USA in exercise science.

BROOKE BOENING ASSISTANT Coach

First Year at Southeastern Louisiana • South Alabama, 2014

Brooke Boening joined the Southeastern Louisiana softball coaching staff In September 2017. Boening primarily works with the Lady Lion pitching staff. Boening comes to Hammond after spending the previous two seasons on the staff at the University of Rhode Island. During her time at URI, she worked with Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie team pitchers Sarah Gunderson and Rebecca Rogers.

Boening began her coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Northwestern State. In her season on the Lady Demon coaching staff, she worked with Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year Mikayla Brown and helped NSU lead the Southland Conference in ERA (1.19) and opposing batting average (.213). Boening pitched for NSU from 2010-13 and helped the Lady Demons to a Southland Conference Tournament championship and NCAA Regional appearance as a senior. She posted 384 strikeouts and a 3.30 ERA during her time in Natchitoches and also served as the vice president of the Northwestern State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). A native of Floresville, Texas, Boening earned her bachelor’s degree in health and exercise science in 2013 and earned a master’s in health and human performance with a concentration in sport administration in 2015.

Fremin played collegiately at Belhaven and Florida Community College in Jacksonville, where she was a four-time All-Conference centerfielder. In 2012, Alana was inducted into the Belhaven University’s Sports Hall of Fame for her leadership and accomplishments on the softball field. The Fremins are the parents of two daughters, Brelan and Cambre. Alana Fremin is in her third season with the Southeastern Louisiana softball coaching staff. The veteran coach is in charge of player development. Fremin, the wife of first-year head coach Rick Fremin, has been on her husband’s coaching staff for both of his previous collegiate head coaching experiences at Belhaven and Jackson State. Fremin, who primarily worked with the outfielders at JSU, helped both Jackson State and Belhaven reach new heights on and off the field.

NCAA INFRACTION NOTICE

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”

University Administration

r. John L. Crain was named President of Southeastern Louisiana University on February 17, 2009, by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, after serving as Interim President since July 2008. Crain served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for seven years prior to his appointment as President. His 23 years of experience on the Hammond campus includes heading the Department of Accounting, chairing the Council of Department Heads, serving as president of the Faculty Senate, director of the Small Business Development Center, and 13 years as a full-time member of the accounting faculty. A Southeastern alumnus, Crain headed Southeastern’s Accounting Department from 19992001. As department chair, he led efforts to reaffirm the department’s accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Crain is a native of Franklinton and 1978 graduate of Franklinton High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Southeastern in 1981 and Master of Business Administration in 1984. He attained Certified Public Accountant status in 1983. He received his doctoral degree in accountancy from the University of Mississippi in 1988. Crain’s scholarly accomplishments include publication of more than 50 refereed journal articles and presentations at academic conferences. He was the 1992 recipient of Southeastern’s highest faculty award, the President’s Award for Excellence in Research. He was a member of the Louisiana Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence, the Louisiana Board of Regents Master Plan Nation-

2018 SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA SOFTBALL

fter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Artigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics on October 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season, Artigues helped build a foundation of success for the Southeastern baseball program and now is doing the same for the entire athletic department. In his first year on the job, he presided over arguably the greatest athletic year in Southeastern history. The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference championships, the most the school has ever won in a single year. The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record. Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference. Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years. Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national, regional and conference awards. Advancing to the cham-

pionship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted a 39-21 record and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of the Year for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history, Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll. to 42 wins and a berth in the JUCO World Series in Millington, Tenn. PRCC finished the year as the South Division Conference Champions, Region XXIII Champions and Central District Champions with Artigues earning Region XXIII and Central District Coach of the Year honors. Before returning to Pearl River in 2001, where he was a two-year letter winner and was a first team All-State and All-Region selection, Artigues spent three seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and posted a 107-57 record. In his final season at BPCC, Artigues led the Cavaliers to a school-record 46 wins and a No. 8 ranking in the final NJCAA poll. Artigues began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at Spring Hill College where he worked with the team’s hitters and infielders. He served as Dean of Students and head baseball coach at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La., where he led the Saints to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 1996. Artigues moved to Hammond in 1996 and served as athletic director and head baseball coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, leading the Falcons to the 1997 state playoffs. He then moved on to the college ranks accepting a job at UNO where he was a volunteer assistant coach in 1998 under Tom Schwaner. As a player, Artigues spent two seasons at PRCC where he was an All-State and All-Region selection. He then went on to play two seasons at Belhaven College where he was an All-Conference selection as a second baseman. A native of Bay St. Louis, Miss., he holds the highest single-season on-base percentage (.538) and sixth-highest career batting average (.375) in Belhaven history. A 1992 graduate of Belhaven, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration, Artigues also holds a Master’s Degree in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy (1993). Artigues and his wife Rachel are the parents of two sons, Christopher“Champ”and Casey.

The Lion Athletics Association (LAA) is a non-profit organization which assists the Southeastern Athletics Department by providing financial support for scholarships, operations and athletic facilities. The LAA follows by-laws set forth and reviewed yearly by the President of the University, Athletic Director and the LAA Board of Directors to ensure all policies and goals comply with the NCAA and Southeastern Louisiana University regulations and missions. The primary mission of the LAA is to positively impact the lives of Southeastern student-athletes.

Giving Options

Contributions to the LAA can be earmarked for use by specific sports programs, spirit groups, the Academic Center, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee or the LAA general fund.
