Lady Lions Carry High Hopes InTo 2017-18 The Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball team will begin a new era in 2017-18 under the direction of first-year head coach and Hammond native Ayla Guzzardo. With an influx of new talent and a solid veteran corps, Guzzardo has high hopes for her improved roster.

2017-18 season preview

“We’ve brought in a different caliber of athlete with our newcomers and we think all of them will have immediate positive impacts,” Guzzardo commented. “All of our returners have been working hard during the offseason. We feel confident about where we are heading into preseason practice.” Southeastern’s top returners are senior guard Taylin Underwood (Livingston, Louisiana) and sophomore guard Charliee Dugas (Rayne, Louisiana). Underwood, a first team preseason AllSouthland Confernece selction, was an All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana choice last season after leading the team with 18.6 points per game – the highest single-season scoring average by a Lady Lion since the 1999-00 season. Dugas was tabbed the Louisiana Freshman of the Year after contributing 10.7 points per game in her debut season out of Rayne High School. Guzzardo says her top two scorers are not the only ones to make strides during the offseason. “Taylin and Charliee have both done amazing in their preseason work,” Guzzardo said. “But we also have (sophomore guard) Tyler Morrison (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) back stronger and fully healthy after she missed some time with an elbow injury last season. She’s going to be a major contributor for us in 2017-18. “(Senior forward) Tytiana Hall (Crystal Springs, Mississippi) has had an outstanding preseason and has been playing with a high motor that we need her to maintain during the season,” Guzzardo added. “Before she suffered an injury during preseason, we expected (senior guard) Bre Warren (Slidell, Louisiana) to play a key role for us with her defensive and shooting ability.” Guzzardo and her staff are also excited about the quartet of new players – junior transfers Jyar Francis (Ponchatoula, Louisiana) and Kyla Williams (New Orleans, Louisiana), as well as the athletic freshman duo of forward Caitlyn Williams (Brusly, Louisiana) and wing Morgan Carrier (New Iberia, Louisiana). “Jyar has been sitting out as a transfer from Wichita State and has completely transformed her game during her time off,” Guzzardo commented. “She will give us a huge boost when we add her to the mix at the end of the fall semester. Kyla comes to us from Hutchinson CC and works hard every day. She is an excellent rebounder and gives us a good interior defender, which is something we were lacking last season.

2

2017-18 SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL “Caitlyn is going to be an AllSouthland Conference player for us during her four years and has improved greatly since she’s been here,” Guzzardo added. “Morgan is very athletic and plays with great energy and we’re fortunate to have her with us for the next four years.” The Lady Lions will see their first on-court action on Nov. 3, when they host LSU Alexandria for a 6 p.m. exhibition in the University Center. SLU officially opens the season on Nov. 10, hosting Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m. in the UC. Other non-conference opponents visiting Hammond this season include UL Lafayette (Dec. 13, 7 p.m.) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 21, 2 p.m.).

“We definitely face a tough start to conference play,” Guzzardo said. “But we’re excited to face that challenge. We’ll find out a lot about our character and our will to win when facing adversity.”

Other road games on the slate for Southeastern during non-conference play include contests at Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 26), Grambling (Nov. 30), TCU (Dec. 10) and Auburn (Dec. 19). “We need experience with this roster,” Guzzardo said. “We need to learn what it’s like to be on the road and get accustomed to those long bus trips. We’re not taking any shortcuts with our non-conference schedule, but it will serve as great preparation for Southland Conference play.” The Lady Lions will open league action with three consecutive road games at Stephen F. Austin (Dec. 28), Central Arkansas (Dec. 31) and Abilene Christian (Jan. 6), before opening the home portion of its league schedule on Jan. 10 versus Lamar. Those first four opponents were also the top four finishers in last year’s Southland standings.

SLU opens its road schedule on Nov. 12 with a 2 p.m. contest at LSU. Following that game, the Lady Lions will be at Cincinnati for a 6 p.m. game with the Bearcats on Nov. 15. The ensuing weekend will serve as a homecoming of sorts for Guzzardo, as SLU competes versus Akron and Kent State on Nov. 17 and 18 in the Akron Classic. Guzzardo coached for four seasons and played for two for the host Zips.

“If I had to pick my favorite game on our non-conference schedule, it would have to be the Akron game,” Guzzardo said. “It will be a game that’s near and dear to my heart and I’m looking forward to bringing our team up there to show what we can do.”

2017-18 SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NCAA INFRACTION NOTICE

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university.

ALL-TIME RECORD VERSUS OPPONENTS

As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”

Lady Lions win Small College title in 3rd season of existence It took only three years for Southeastern to reach the pinnacle of women’s college basketball. Under the guidance of Southeastern Hall of Famer Linda Puckett, the Lady Lions rolled to a 30-2 record in their third year of existence in 1976-77, knocking off Phillips University for the AIAW Small College National Championship. Southeastern had gone 52-4 in its first two campaigns but the best was yet to come. Led by the solid all-around play of Pam Cook and the dominating inside presence of Queen Brumfield and Sarah Williams, the Lady Lions outscored their opposition by over 36 points per game and produced 15 contests in which they scored 100 or more points. Starting in impressive fashion, the Lady Lions won their first 12 games to open the season, scoring 100 or more points in seven games to earn the reputation as the nation’s highest scoring team. Southeastern suffered its first loss at the University of Texas Tournament, where it lost 80-79 to Stephen F. Austin where it missed a last second shot. In the tournament, however, Southeastern defeated Trinity University and Texas en route to the finals. That performance

catapulted Southeastern into the top-15 among small colleges, a position it would remain in for the remainder of the season. The Lady Lions tallied eight consecutive wins coming out of the Texas Tournament before losing to LSU, which finished second overall in the Major College AIAW Tournament. During that stretch were victories over Louisiana Tech and a 106-69 trouncing of LSU. The 101-77 loss at LSU would be the final loss of the season for the Lady Lions as they rolled through the LAIAW Small College Tournament with ease, pounding Louisiana College and McNeese State twice. Southeastern hosted the AIAW Regional Tournament in Cefalu Coliseum and started out the tournament with a 132-50 thrashing of Central Arkansas, which still stands as the largest margin of victory in Lady Lion history. The Lady Lions came back with a convincing win over Southern Arkansas before defeating Phillips (Okla.) University, a team that finished third in the nation the previous season. For the Lady Lions, it was off to Pomona, Calif., where they would compete in the National AIAW Tournament for the second

consecutive season. In 1975-76, the Lady Lions finished fifth in the nation with a 30-2 overall record. For Southeastern to improve on the 1975-76 performance, it would have to have solid play from its starters along with its bench. After opening the tournament with a 91-50 win over Dayton, the Lady Lions knocked off previously unbeaten High Point (N.C.) University in convincing fashion, 11285. That win advanced Southeastern to a date with defending national champion Berry (Ga.) College with a berth in the championship game on the line.

Linda Puckett guided Southeastern to the 1976-77 AIAW Small College National Championship. She was inducted into the Southeastern Hall of Fame in 2002.

The 1976-77 Southeastern team, which recorded 18 games with 100 or more points,

ATHLETIC HISTORY

2017-18 SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Athletic History outheastern Louisiana University’s storied Sintercollegiate athletic history dates back to 1930. Now, 15 sports strong, with nearly 330 stu-

dent-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 17th year of Southland Conference membership poised for academic and competitive growth into the next century. Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and sponsors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s. For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 23 conference championships, including five regular-season crowns in women’s soccer, four regular-season titles in women’s tennis and four men’s golf championships. Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77. Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated football team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL. The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation. Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana. It claimed the Southland Conference Men’s All Sports trophy in 2008-09 and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings in three of the past five years. Southland Conference championships offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA post-season

play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf. Southeastern also made its mark in post-season NCAA Championship competition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in the 1998 championship tournament, along with qualifying seven golfers for the NCAA championship tournament and advancing to six NCAA regionals (2000, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). The Lions baseball team played in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s and came within a game of returning to the postseason in both 2012 and 2013, finally breaking through in 2014. The women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2009 and 2013; while the track and field team has qualified numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country. Southeastern student-athletes have been named All-Americans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and have garnered numerous awards in the Southland and the state of Louisiana. Southeastern student-athletes have also earned Academic All-American recognition; most recently in softball and baseball, while two individuals were named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2012. Under the leadership of Athletic Director Jay Artigues, Southeastern experienced unprecedented success in the 2013-14 school year. Southeastern claimed a school-record five conference titles during the academic year, with the baseball, football and soccer teams, as well as individual cross country, golf and track & field athletes, representing the institution in NCAA postseason action. Football and baseball carried the championship success into the 2014-15 academic year. Football repeated as Southland Conference champions. The baseball Lions finished 42-17 overall and 25-5 in the Southland Conference, setting the school record for overall wins and the Southland record for conference wins on their way to claiming the conference’s regular-season championship.

Soccer picked up another championship ring in the fall of 2015, winning the Southland Conference Tournament and advancing to the NCAA playoffs. In the spring of 2016 several athletes turned in stellar performances. Track & Field’s Alex Young won a national championship in the weight throw. Katie Lacour rewrote the softball record book on her way to leading the nation in stolen bases and claiming the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Golden Shoe Award. Jameson Fisher helped the Lion baseball team to its first NCAA at-large bid, and led the nation in both batting average and on-base percentage through the end of the regular season.

The Lions and Lady Lions brought home five conference championships, the most the school has ever won in a single year. The Lion football program ran through the Southland Conference with an undefeated record, advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time, picked up the first playoff win in school history and finished the season with an 11-3 overall record. Lady Lion Soccer won the Southland Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Southeastern men’s track & field program won both the indoor and outdoor Southland Conference titles, marking the first time in school history the Lions had swept through the conference. Lion Baseball continued its run of success, rallying under the leadership of Artigues protege Matt Riser to win the Southland Conference Tournament and advance to an NCAA Regional for the first time in 20 years. Under Artigues, Lion baseball established itself as a growing force in the region by producing three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national, regional and conference awards. Advancing to the cham-

pionship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted a 39-21 record and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of the Year for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history, Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll. In his first season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats

to 42 wins and a berth in the JUCO World Series in Millington, Tenn. PRCC finished the year as the South Division Conference Champions, Region XXIII Champions and Central District Champions with Artigues earning Region XXIII and Central District Coach of the Year honors. Before returning to Pearl River in 2001, where he was a two-year letter winner and was a first team All-State and All-Region selection, Artigues spent three seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and posted a 107-57 record. In his final season at BPCC, Artigues led the Cavaliers to a school-record 46 wins and a No. 8 ranking in the final NJCAA poll. Artigues began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at Spring Hill College where he worked with the team’s hitters and infielders. He served as Dean of Students and head baseball coach at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La., where he led the Saints to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 1996. Artigues moved to Hammond in 1996 and served as athletic director and head baseball coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, leading the Falcons to the 1997 state playoffs. He then moved on to the college ranks accepting a job at UNO where he was a volunteer assistant coach in 1998 under Tom Schwaner. As a player, Artigues spent two seasons at PRCC where he was an All-State and All-Region selection. He then went on to play two seasons at Belhaven College where he was an All-Conference selection as a second baseman. A native of Bay St. Louis, Miss., he holds the highest single-season on-base percentage (.538) and sixth-highest career batting average (.375) in Belhaven history. A 1992 graduate of Belhaven, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration, Artigues also holds a Master’s Degree in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy (1993). Artigues and his wife Rachel are the parents of two sons, Christopher“Champ”and Casey.
