Southeastern Louisiana University 2012 SEASON PREVIEW With a solid returning corps and several newcomers slated to make an immediate impact, Southeastern Louisiana head coach Pete Langlois expects his Lady Lions to take major strides in 2012. After a lackluster 2010, Southeastern showed progress in 2011, doubling its win total from the previous season and remaining in Southland Conference Tournament contention until the final weekend. With several key players returning looking to make a bigger impact in 2012 and the addition of a couple of immediate starters, Langlois and his squad are looking to take the next step by being one of the six teams to qualify for the league tournament, scheduled for May 10-12 in San Antonio, Texas.

Kayla Elswick with returning second baseman (sophomore) Megan McCollum will give us arguably our best middle infield we’ve ever had. “How much progress we’ve made on the circle is going to be the key,” Langlois added. “We’ve seen enough from (sophomore) Jessie Browne and (junior) Kenna Terry to have a lot of faith in their ability to be a dangerous one-two punch in the Southland Conference. We’re also pleased with the improvements made by (junior) Kati Morse and (senior) Vicki Honeycutt. If we can get those two going, we’re going to have an extremely deep pitching staff.” Nichols is the top returner for the Lady

“We’re very excited about the team we’ve put together and the potential we have,” Langlois, who is in 18th season at the helm of the Southeastern program, commented. “We have added some power in the middle of the lineup with the addition of (juniors) Ariell Van Hook and Katie Doyle, which is something we’ve been missing in the past couple of years. Pairing those two with (junior) Kelsey Nichols and (senior) Katie Matthews should give us a much more potent offense. “We also feel really good about where we are defensively,” Langlois continued. “(Junior) Michelle Duhe has been outstanding in centerfield and she returns with Kelsey and Katie to give us a veteran outfield group that all can take away hits with their ability to run down balls. Combining our new shortstop (sophomore)

Kelsey Nichols

after an impressive freshman campaign that saw the Lafayette native commit just three errors all season. McCollum will be paired with Elswick, a rangy shortstop who earned All-Region VII honors as a freshman at Motlow College. The other spots in the lineup are up for grabs, a situation that has Langlois excited. “We have a lot of different options at catcher, first, third and DP,” Langlois said. “We’ll have some players who are going to have to make the most of the opportunities that are presented them. Our returners are definitely going to be pushed by Katie Doyle and Ariell. Katie was our most productive hitter in the fall and Ariell may be the most naturally talented hitter we’ve had on our roster in the last decade. We’re going to have to have them in the lineup, which in turn gives us some veteran options off the bench that we can count on.” Van Hook and sophomore Tori Sheppard are slated to share time at first base, while both, along with Doyle, Browne, sen-

Megan McCollum Lions and will start in left field, after earning All-Southland Conference honors as a sophomore. Nichols, an Alvin, Texas native, hit .358 on the year with five home runs. Matthews will look to build on an impressive debut season in 2011, as the Spring, Texas product led the team in home runs with six in her first season with the program after transferring from Centenary. Duhe will roam centerfield, where she routinely robbed extra base hits with her diving catches.

The starting middle infield is also set with McCollum returning at second base,

Southeastern Louisiana University 2012 SEASON PREVIEW Coniglio, Bliss and Van Hook for playing time on the hot corner. Gomez, Bliss, Doyle and sophomore Hali Westmoreland will all battle for catching duties. Whoever is behind the plate will be receiving pitches from what figures to be an improved pitching staff. Browne held opponents to a .188 batting average, but finished with 6-8 due in large part to control problems that Langlois and his staff believe they have fixed heading into 2012. Terry returns after winning a team-high seven games – with all of her wins coming against Southland Conference opposition. “Jessie is a No. 1-type talent in our league and we saw last year that when she pitched with good control, she was awfully tough to hit,” Langlois said. “She’s done a lot of work to fix her control issues and we think we’ll see the results of her work immediately. If Jessie can give us consistent good innings, we won’t have to put so much pressure on Kenna like we had to last year.

glois believes the non-conference schedule will be good preparation for the league schedule. “We’re going to find out about our team in those 25 games before conference play,” Langlois said. “We’ve definitely enhanced our team’s overall talent. With those new additions, there’s some players who are accustomed to being in the starting nine day in and day out that may have to accept a lesser role. Our players’ abilities to accept whatever their role is and put the team’s goals before their individual goals is going to be key. We have recruited good kids and we believe that they are going to all do their best at whatever role they are given. If they do that, 2012 has the potential to be a great year.”

“Kati and (volunteer assistant coach) Tamra Ladnier worked on some new things that we expect to really help her performance,” Langlois continued. “The xfactor for our staff could be Vicki. Her ability to change speeds could make her a very effective closer.” Southeastern will face a daunting nonconference schedule before opening

Southeastern Louisiana University HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS

Head Coach Pete Langlois 18th Year at Southeastern School Career Record: 355-491 Southeastern Louisiana, 1992

After 17 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2008 squad returned to the Southland Conference Tournament after a five-year absence. Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led seven teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve. The upgrading of Southeastern's home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick fence along the foul lines and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason leading up to the 2010 season, turf was laid in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New outdoor batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’s home field is considered to be one of the top facilities in the SLC and the immediate area.

Over the past 11 seasons, Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy of individual accolades including 40 all-SLC selections (six first team) and 40 allLouisiana picks. In 2004, Summer Delaneuville was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith - the school's career leader in home runs - was named first-team all-SLC and allLouisiana. As a senior, Smith was once again named all-SLC. The three first-team SLC picks in 2002 were the first-ever in the Southland for Southeastern. In 2010, Southeastern junior infielder Katie Duhe was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team as a second team selection. Duhe, a President’s Medal of Academic Excellence recipient, earned first team Academic AllSouthland honors in 2011. In 2009, Heather Sherrill was named to the AllSouthland team for the third time and became the school’s leader in hits, RBI, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases. Duhe was named to the Academic All-District VI squad, marking the third of four straight years that one of Langlois’ players made the squad.

Southeastern Louisiana University HEAD COACH PETE LANGLOIS In 2008, Sherrill was a first team All-Southland Conference and AllLouisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who became the school’s career strikeout leader as a senior, made her third appearance on the All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhart was named to the Academic All-America team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team. In 2007, Ray was a first team AllSLC choice and Arica Rodriguez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The Lady Lions tied the school record with 31 victories, including a 1-0 win over No. 6 LSU that snapped the Lady Tigers' 55game winning streak versus in-state schools. Ray set school records with 21 victories and eight shutouts. Langlois also earned his 300th career win during the 2007 campaign. The 2001 season provided perhaps the finest season ever for Southeastern softball as Langlois' Lions broke or tied 14 school and individual single-season and single-game records and placed five on the Southland Conference post season teams en route to the first winning season since 1998. Most noticeably, the squad tied the all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as the Lady Lions knocked off the second and third-seeded teams finishing with a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors. The 2002 season wasn’t quite as good as 2001, but the finish was almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fifth place league finish. The Lions didn't win quite as many games or set as many records as the '01 squad, but the 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off top-seeded and tournament host Northwestern State in the semifinals to finish third in the event for the second straight year.

The renovation of North Oak Park has been one of Langlois’ top accomplishments

In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Conference and set the school's all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament while also setting numerous standards in the record books. And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor is no stranger. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge. Langlois received a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (12) and Macie (8). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008 and the couple welcomed their first son, Jacques, in February 2011.

Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeastern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under thenhead coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions. Langlois picked up the duties as interim head coach, finishing the season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995. Langlois has compiled an overall coaching record of 355-491 but has recorded 20+ wins in 10 of his last 12 campaigns. In his time at Southeastern, he has guided two All-South Region players, 23 All-Louisiana team members, 45 allConference players, 17 conference allAcademic team members and four CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.

Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve longtime problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw

collegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities.
