2012 Southeastern Louisiana Women’s Soccer Media Guide

2012 Season Preview Senior-led Lady Lions set to make run at Southland Conference title With a roster filled with talent and experience, the 2012 Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team is poised to be a major player in the upcoming season’s battle for the Southland Conference championship. The Lady Lions feature 11 seniors among their 16 returning letterwinners from last season’s squad, which finished with an 11-7 overall record. The strong returning nucleus will be bolstered by a group of nine talented newcomers, several who 15th-year head coach Blake Hornbuckle expects to make an immediate impact. Hornbuckle’s 25-person roster is led by a league-high six preseason All-Southland Conference performers. Senior forwards Maiya Cooper (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Karly Dagys (Oakville, Ont.) are joined on the first team by junior midfielder Kelsey Salcido (Lakewood, Calif.). The Lady Lion preseason all-league contingent also includes senior midfielder Lauren Stillians (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), senior goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus (San Leandro, Calif.) and junior defender Shanyce Shaw (Ajax, Ont.). With such a talented, senior-laden squad, Hornbuckle expects a mature roster that has no shortage of leaders.

“One of the advantages of having a large group of seniors is that we should have many student-athletes who our younger players can look to for guidance,” Hornbuckle said. “We have several candidates who can step up in that leadership role for us at opportune times during the season.” The Lady Lions return the top eight scorers from a dynamic offense that ranked eighth in Division I a season ago with 2.53 goals per match. The senior tandem of Cooper and Dagys fuel the Southeastern attack for the fourth straight season up top. A three-time first team All-Southland Conference selection and a NSCAA All-Central Region selection each of the last two seasons, Cooper enters her senior season with a chance to solidify her spot among the most prolific scorers in Southland Conference history. One of two players in school history with three seasons of double-digit goal totals, Cooper enters the season third in school history with 37 goals and 88 points. While Cooper has been the top scorer, Dagys, an All-Southland performer in 2011 after

2012 Southeastern Louisiana Media Guide

setting a single-season school record with 12 assists, is one of the league’s top distributors. Dagys, who joins Cooper in the program’s top 10 in career goals and points, needs two assists to become the Lady Lion all-time leader in career assists. Hornbuckle expects his tandem to close out their careers with a productive senior season, while also receiving help at forward from a trio of new faces. “We’re very excited about what should be a fun group on our attack,” Hornbuckle commented. “Maiya and Karly have been extremely productive throughout their careers and can cement strong legacies in their final season. We expect (freshmen) Casey Peacock (Douglasville, Ga.), Megan Simon (Mandeville, La.) and Kayla Vera (Vancouver, Wash.) to give us an added dimension up top. Their skills should complement Maiya and Karly well.” Southeastern should once again be strong in the midfield behind Salcido, Stillians, senior Kerry McWhirter (Olathe, Kan.) and sophomore Jen Babcock (Canton, Mich.).The quartet combined for 30 assists in 2011.

After playing primarily in the back as a freshman, Salcido had a breakout sophomore season in her first season as a full-time midfielder. A first team All-Southland Conference selection, Salcido was among the league leaders with 10 goals and eight assists. Stillians and Babcock were also among the league’s best distributors in 2011 with eight and seven assists, respectively. McWhirter had four goals and four assists as a junior after finishing second in the Southland with eight assists in 2010.

“(Sophomore) Chelsea Villaescusa (Cypress, Calif.) should be a stabilizing force for us in the back and joins us having played a season at Long Beach State,” Hornbuckle added. “We have two freshmen in Maddie Allen (Ottawa, Ont.) and Erin Christ (Irvine, Calif.) that can come in and have an immediate impact. Maddie’s versatility allows her to play centrally and out wide, while Erin is great at winning balls out of the air. We’re looking forward to both of their arrivals.”

“Kelsey had a great season last year and we expect her to continue her development,” Hornbuckle commented. “Her decision making and ability to execute our attack provides us with more options.

Anchoring the Lady Lion 11 will be the league’s most experienced goalkeeping tandem in Bockhaus and senior Cassie Northrup (Hamilton, Ont.). Bockhaus, who missed all of 2011, will be looking to return to her 2010 form when she earned Southland Conference Player of the Year honors. The two-time first team All-Southland selection is the league’s career record holder with 30 shutouts.

“Lauren will once again play a pivotal role for us centrally,” Hornbuckle continued. “Kerry’s ability with both feet will be a great asset to us both up top and in the midfield. Jen has a chance to be our breakout player this season. She’s versatile enough to play out wide and centrally. We also expect (freshman) Cheyenne Maxwell (Sacramento, Calif.) to make a big impact with her distribution skills. Megan Miller (Castle Rock, Colo.) should contribute as well.” Shaw leads a Southeastern backfield that will see a group of new faces looking to slow down opposing attacks. Veterans Jaci Teresinski (Chandler, Ariz.) and Stillians should also see plenty of action in the backfield. Hornbuckle also has high expectations for several newcomers in the back. “Shanyce has been a solid, steady player for us on the outside and we expect her to continue to become more adept at getting us into our attack,” Hornbuckle stated. “Jaci and Lauren are two of our most versatile players and we expect them to play roles all over the field, including in the back.

Northrup did an excellent job filling in for Bockhaus in 2011, despite battling an injury throughout the season. In her 14 starts, she posted a 0.98 goals against average and five shutouts. Hornbuckle has confidence in both of his senior net minders to be the last line of defense. “We feel very secure with what we have in goal,” Hornbuckle commented. “Lacey returns and we expect her to mold our back line. Cassie did a great job for us last season, despite being injured and having her back healthy is going to be a big asset for us.” Southeastern is picked to finish third in the Southland Conference by both the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Hornbuckle expects the league race to be the typical wide open affair. “The Southland Conference is always very competitive and this year is no different,” Hornbuckle said. “We expect to have to fight each match to earn a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament and get a chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament.”

Blake Hornbuckle Head Coach

15th Season at Southeastern Louisiana • School Record: 155-88-29 • Overall Record: 165-95-31 • Maryville (Tenn.) College, 1991 Entering his 15th season at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer program, Lady Lion head coach Blake Hornbuckle has helped the program establish itself as one of the elite programs in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. A five-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and three-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the school’s all-time leader in victories with 155, Hornbuckle has guided Southeastern to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, a pair of Southland Conference tournament titles, five regular-season crowns and eight SLC Tournament championship game appearances. Hornbuckle took over a program that had compiled a 15-40 record before his arrival and has helped Southeastern up their all-time mark to above the .500 mark at 170-128-27. Hornbuckle has a 155-88-27 record in 14 seasons as the Lady Lion head coach. In the past 11 seasons, the Lady Lions have won 110 matches, including a school-record 15 wins in 2003, when the Lady Lions earned their second straight Southland Conference regular season title and third in the last five seasons. After leading the 2003 squad to a 15-2-4 record and a undefeated 9-03 SLC mark, Hornbuckle was named LSWA Coach of the Year for a third time. Hornbuckle guided the Lady Lions to a 12-win season in 2002. In 2006, he was named SLC Coach of the Year, guiding the team to an 11-4-4 record and 5-0-3 league mark. The Lady Lions’ 2006 league title was its fourth regular season championship in school history. In 2009, the team made

its first appearance in the NCAA College Cup with Hornbuckle again earning LSWA Coach of the Year honors. He repeated as Louisiana’s top coach in 2010 and also earned the same honor from the SLC, as he led the Lady Lions to a Southland regular season title and a school-record tying 15 victories. Hornbuckle’s success has been evident on the field as he has produced 95 all-conference players, 63 All-Louisiana selections, four conference and three Louisiana players-of-the-year, five conference newcomer-of-the-year, five Louisiana newcomer-of-theyear, three SLC freshman-of-the year and four Louisiana freshmen-of-the-year athletes. Among the players under his tutelage were CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-District selection Kim Kwolek, who was named the 1999 recipient of the F.L. McDonald Academic Scholarship, given to the female studentathlete in the Southland Conference with the highest grade point average. In 2009, Dana Mayer earned the F.L. McDonald Post Graduate Scholarship and received the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence. In the past five seasons, Southeastern has placed eight student-athletes on the NSCAA All-South Region Scholar teams and earned Team Academic and Ethics Awards in recent seasons. In 2003, forward Kendra Oney became the first player in Southland Conference history to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine All-Central Region Team and was selected the SLC Player of the Year. In addition, midfielder Alexis Tramacchi was named the SLC Women’s Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year. In

2012 Southeastern Louisiana Media Guide

2006, Kari Yost was named both Southland Conference Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. Mayer earned Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2009. In 2010, Lacey Bockhaus was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year and was joined on the NSCAA All-Central Region team by Natalie Santana and Maiya Cooper. Cooper was the first repeat All-Region selection in school history in 2011, while MacIntosh was one of three Southland All-Academic selections and was named an All-South Region Scholar for the second straight season. In his first season as head coach, Hornbuckle took the Lady Lions to the SLC Championship Game where they defeated host Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, to cap an 8-10-2 campaign. For his efforts, Hornbuckle was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year. The 1999 squad posted a 7-2-3 mark in SLC games during the season and won the conference’s regular-season title for the first time in school history.Along the way to 11 victories, Hornbuckle’s crew ripped off a 13-game unbeaten streak (9-0-4), which was fifth-best in the nation, and finished with a final record of 11-4-5. For his leadership, Hornbuckle was named as the 1999 Coach of the Year by both the LSWA and the Southland Conference.

The Lady Lions continued their winning ways in 2000, establishing a school record for wins (13). Seven players earned All-Conference honors with Cory Cochrane earning Freshman of the Year honors by both the Southland Conference and LSWA, giving the Lady Lions three straight honorees by both organizations. In 2001, Southeastern advanced to the SLC championship match for the fifth straight year. The 2002 squad won the SLC regular season title and set school records for goals (58), goals per game (2.76), points (167) and assists (51). Hornbuckle’s squad featured five All-SLC performers and three All-Louisiana selections, led by transfer Kim McNally. McNally rewrote the school and SLC record books on the way to earning SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors. Due to a rash of injuries and the loss of six starters in 2005, the Lady Lions suffered a 3-11-1 season. The Lady Lions bounced back to win the Southland Conference title in 2006, shutting out a school-record 11 opponents and allowing only two goals in conference play, while also rolling to a nine-match winning streak. The 2009 season saw the Lady Lions finish 135-2, win the Southland Conference Tournament and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they

lost to No. 3 national seed Florida State, 4-1, in the opening round. In the loss, Cooper scored a goaland the Lady Lions held FSU scoreless in the second half. Cooper and MacIntosh were repeat first team All-Southland selections, while Kelsey Salcido joined the pair on the All-Southland squad. Southeastern Soccer Complex Opened in 2002, the Southeastern Soccer Complex provides the Lady Lions with one of the top facilities in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. Located on the university’s North Campus, the 1,000seat facility features a digital LED scoreboard and a top-of-theline sound system. In addition to being used for Southeastern matches and practices, the Southeastern Soccer Complex also hosts several camps throughout the area. The field has also given the Lady Lions a definite “home-field” advantage, as Southeastern has recorded a 51-22-10 record in its nine seasons playing at the facility. “The opening of the Southeastern Soccer Complex was a big step in the right direction for our program,” head women’s soccer coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “The field has a great root system and is one of the better playing surfaces in the area. With a few added amenities, we will have a first-class facility that the community and university can enjoy, that provides a showcase for North Campus and aids the future of our program.” The newest additions to the facility are on-line for the 2009 season. A new permanent structure that covers the benches and press area, as well as serves as a film tower has been added.

31

One of the nicer features is the grassy berm located on the left side of the Southeastern Soccer Complex entrance. During Lady Lion home games, Southeastern students and fans are known to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the view from the berm. Plans for adding a second berm on the right side are in place. In its inaugural season, the Southeastern Soccer Complex played host to the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament, marking the first time Southeastern had hosted a SLC postseason event. Southeastern also served as the host site for the 2004 and 2005 SLC Tournaments. In recent years, one of the priorities of Southeastern Athletics has been the improvement and renovation of the teams’ facilities. The Southeastern Soccer Complex is a prime example of that priority. In 2004, a concrete entrance way has been laid, as well as a concrete pad for the benches and press row area.

Director of Athletics B

art Bellairs is in his third year at Southeastern Louisiana University after being named the school’s 15th Director of Athletics in November of 2009. Before arriving at Southeastern, Bellairs served in the same capacity at Savannah State University. A former senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute, Bellairs oversees 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference. Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 23 regular-season or tournament championships, including five regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, three in men’s golf and two in men’s basketball. Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships. During Bellairs’ tenure at Southeastern, the University’s athletic facilities have seen significant improvements, including renovations to locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The Southeastern baseball team saw the addition of a covered hitting facility and a new bullpen area while the Ray A. Naquin Strength and Conditioning Center installed new flooring and workout equipment. The Southeastern track and field team saw improvements with locker rooms, along with a state-of-the-art facility. In volleyball, the Lady Lions’ will move into an expanded locker room while the women’s tennis team moved into its new locker rooms and refurbished courts.

33

Probably the biggest improvement during Bellairs’ tenure has been the replacement of the playing surface at Strawberry Stadium. The new surface - which was installed in June 2012 - was the same surface used in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome during the 2010 season. With improvements to help Southeastern on the field, there has also been steady improvement in the classroom and APR scores. Eleven of the 15 sports met or exceeded the standard of 925 set forth by the NCAA. Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008. There he implemented an academics success plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from registration to graduation. He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships. During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins. Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va. Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all key athletic facilities. There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams. As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of the Year and

the “Sports Illustrated” Unknown Coach of the Year. Bellairs, a native of Richmond, Ky., also served as assistant basketball coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., from 1988 to 1993, where his teams saw one NCAA tournament appearance and five NIT appearances; as assistant basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts (1986-1988); assistant basketball coach at the University of Maryland (1984-1986); and head basketball coach, head cross country coach and assistant baseball coach at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. (1983-1985). He holds a Master of Science degree in physical education and athletics administration from Western Illinois University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology/social work from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. Bellairs and his wife Jacki have five children.
