Southeastern Louisiana University WOMEN’S SOCCER
2013 Season Preview Senior-led Lady Lions set to make run at Southland Conference title The Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team will have a somewhat new look as it moves into the 2013 season. The Lady Lions have six returning starters from last season, yet will also be replacing a group of 11 seniors from last season’s team. Among the players that completed their eligibility were four-time All-Southland Conference forward Maiya Cooper, the program’s assist leader Karly Dagys and the all-time league leader in career shutouts Lacey Bockhaus. Despite the losses, Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle believes Southeastern has what it takes to be a force in the Southland Conference in the coming year. “We have very good leadership from our returning group of players,” Hornbuckle commented. “We have some younger players who we hope to see develop at an accelerated rate. We certainly recognize the contributions of last season’s senior class, but we are poised to move on and continue to succeed. It’s time for a new era for Southeastern Soccer and we are preparing to put a strong foot forward.”
Offensively, Hornbuckle will be charged with replacing Cooper – the only player in school history to post four seasons of double-digit goals. The top candidate to take over the top scoring threat role for the Lady Lions is sophomore Kayla Vera. In 2012, Vera was named Louisiana Freshman of the Year and honorable mention All-Southland Conference after finishing with six goals and six assists. Hornbuckle believes Vera has a bright future in the green and gold.
the right time. Gisenia Utreras is a Memphis transfer with the versatility to contribute up top and in the midfield.” The Lady Lions return a strong pairing in the midfield. Both senior Kelsey Salcido (second team) and Cheyenne Maxwell (honorable mention) were named to the All-Southland Conference teams last season.
Hornbuckle also mentioned several others he expects to contribute to the scoring load.
“With Kelsey leading the way, we have a very strong nucleus in the midfield,” Hornbuckle commented. “Cheyenne is another versatile piece who can also contribute in the back. Jen Babcock will be a force due to her great service and we also expect Megan Simon to provide a spark out wide. Gabrielle Dubroc will also be capable of filling a number of roles. Amber Lasher has an engine that’s always running and she’ll have an immediate impact as a freshman.”
”Casey Peacock had a fantastic off season,” Hornbuckle stated. “She’s big, strong and fast and will be a great asset for us. We also expect Marissa Rodrigues to contribute up top. Brianna Singh comes to us after scoring over 100 goals in high school. She has a knack for finding the net and being at the right place at
Senior Shanyce Shaw, a two-time AllSouthland choice will return to lead the Southeastern defense. Junior Chelsea Villaescusa, sophomore Maddie Allen and sophomore Erin Christ return in the back for a Lady Lion squad that rolled off five consecutive shutouts in the latter part of last season.
“Kayla was able to be very productive for us last season despite the fact that she was never fully healthy,” Hornbuckle said. “Now that she’s 100 percent, she has a chance to really take off. Kayla will draw a great deal of attention and be very difficult for opponents to deal with.”

“Shanyce has been a steady presence at outside back throughout her career,” Hornbuckle said. “Erin was very impressive during the spring and we expect her to be dominant in the air. Maddie and Chelsea are both capable of playing centrally or in the back. Maddie also made great strides in the offseason and Chelsea has great range on her service. “We also have a group of newcomers that should help us in the back right away,” Hornbuckle added. “Alexsis Cable is a good communicator who embraces challenges. Lauren Lorentz is a great in-state product who does an outstanding job connecting her passes. Katie Noonan is another player we expect to make an impact immediately as a physically imposing defender.
The league will have an all-time high 13 soccer-playing schools in 2013. New members include first-year program Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as well as Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian. Hornbuckle expects the same type of competition among the league as he’s seen throughout his tenure. The top six teams in the Southland standings advance to the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 7-10 in Lake Charles. “Every match in the Southland Conference is a battle and we expect nothing less with the new team’s entering the race,” Hornbuckle commented. “We feel like if we come together the way we’re capable, we’ll have a chance to compete until the very end.”
The back line will be protecting a new face in the net for the first time in recent memory. Bockhaus, the 2012 Louisiana Player of the Year, leaves big shoes to fill after finishing her time in Hammond as arguably the most successful goalkeeper in the program’s nearly two-decade history. Freshmen Hope Sabadash and Casey Jeanfreau will be vying for the starting spot in goal.
The Lady Lions open their schedule on Aug. 23, hosting Jackson State in Strawberry Stadium. The remainder of the team’s home contests include visits from Mississippi State (Sept. 6), Alcorn State (Sept. 8), Texas Southern (Sept. 15), Incarnate Word (Sept. 27), Abilene Christian (Sept. 29), Lamar (Oct. 6), Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 18), Northwestern State (Oct. 20) and Houston Baptist (Nov. 3).
“We feel like we have two great freshmen keepers,” Hornbuckle stated. “Hope has great experience after training at the U-20 National Training Center in Ontario. She’s a very composed, confident keeper who does a nice job taking balls out of the air. Casey comes to us as a very good shot stopper who comes off the line very well. We expect it to be a great battle in preseason training for the starting keeper spot.”
Southeastern’s road schedule opens with an Aug. 27 contest at Louisiana-Lafayette.The Lady Lions also travel to Mississippi Valley State (Aug. 30), Southern Miss (Sept. 1), Louisiana-Monroe (Sept. 13), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sept. 20), McNeese State (Sept. 22), Central Arkansas (Oct. 11), Oral Roberts (Oct. 13), Sam Houston State (Oct. 27) and Nicholls State (Nov. 1).
Hornbuckle’s squad will be facing a new challenge as the landscape of the Southland Conference has changed dramatically from a year ago.Two-time defending champion Stephen F. Austin is the prohibitive preseason favorite with Southeastern picked fourth by the head coaches and sixth by the league’s sports information directors.
“We’re very excited about the coming season and hope we can compete for the league title,” Hornbuckle said. “What’s important is not where you are picked in the preseason polls, it’s where you finish in the end.”

Blake Hornbuckle Head Coach
16th Season at Southeastern Louisiana • School Record: 167-95-30 • Overall Record: 177-102-32 • Maryville (Tenn.) College, 1991 Entering his 16th season at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer program, Lady Lion head coach Blake Hornbuckle has helped the program establish itself as one of the elite programs in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. A five-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and three-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, as well as the school’s all-time leader in victories with 167, Hornbuckle has guided Southeastern to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, a pair of Southland Conference tournament titles, five regular-season crowns and eight SLC Tournament championship game appearances. Hornbuckle took over a program that had compiled a 15-40 record before his arrival and has helped Southeastern up their all-time mark to above the .500 mark at 182-135-30. Hornbuckle has a 167-95-30 record in 15 seasons as the Lady Lion head coach. In the past 12 seasons, the Lady Lions have won 122 matches, including a school-record 15 wins in 2003, when the Lady Lions earned their second straight Southland Conference regular season title and third in the last five seasons. After leading the 2003 squad to a 15-2-4 record and a undefeated 9-03 SLC mark, Hornbuckle was named LSWA Coach of the Year for a third time. Hornbuckle guided the Lady Lions to a 12-win season in 2002. In 2006, he was named SLC Coach of the Year, guiding the team to an 11-4-4 record and 5-0-3 league mark. The Lady Lions’ 2006 league title was its fourth regular season cham-
pionship in school history. In 2009, the team made its first appearance in the NCAA College Cup with Hornbuckle again earning LSWA Coach of the Year honors. He repeated as Louisiana’s top coach in 2010 and also earned the same honor from the SLC, as he led the Lady Lions to a Southland regular season title and a school-record tying 15 victories. Hornbuckle’s success has been evident on the field as he has produced 103 all-conference players, 67 All-Louisiana selections, four conference and Louisiana players-of-the-year, five conference newcomer-ofthe-year, five Louisiana newcomer-of-the-year, three SLC freshman-of-the year and five Louisiana freshmen-of-the-year athletes. Among the players under his tutelage were CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-District selection Kim Kwolek, who was named the 1999 recipient of the F.L. McDonald Academic Scholarship, given to the female studentathlete in the Southland Conference with the highest grade point average. In 2009, Dana Mayer earned the F.L. McDonald Post Graduate Scholarship and received the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence. In the past five seasons, Southeastern has placed eight student-athletes on the NSCAA All-South Region Scholar teams and earned Team Academic and Ethics Awards in recent seasons. In 2003, forward Kendra Oney became the first player in Southland Conference history to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine All-Central Region Team and was selected the SLC Player of the Year. In addition, midfielder Alexis Tramacchi was named the

SLC Women’s Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year. In 2006, Kari Yost was named both Southland Conference Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. Mayer earned Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2009. In 2010, Lacey Bockhaus was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year and was joined on the NSCAA All-Central Region team by Natalie Santana and Maiya Cooper. The Lady Lions also excelled in the classroom, as five student-athletes were named to the Southland All-Academic team, led by 2010 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Kyle MacIntosh. Cooper was the first repeat All-Region selection in school history in 2011, while MacIntosh was one of three Southland All-Academic selections and was named an All-South Region Scholar for the second straight season. Bockhaus was named the Louisiana Player of the Year in 2012 and finished her career as the Southland career leader in shutouts, while Cooper became the second student-athlete in league history to earn All-Region honors three times. In his first season as head coach, Hornbuckle took the Lady Lions to the SLC Championship Game where they defeated host Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, to cap an 8-10-2 campaign. For his efforts, Hornbuckle was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year. The 1999 squad posted a 7-2-3 mark in SLC games during the season and won the conference’s regular-season title for the first time in school history.Along the way to 11 victories, Hornbuckle’s crew

ripped off a 13-game unbeaten streak (9-0-4), which was fifth-best in the nation, and finished with a final record of 11-4-5. For his leadership, Hornbuckle was named as the 1999 Coach of the Year by both the LSWA and the Southland Conference. The Lady Lions continued their winning ways in 2000, establishing a school record for wins (13). Seven players earned All-Conference honors with Cory Cochrane earning Freshman of the Year honors by both the Southland Conference and LSWA, giving the Lady Lions three straight honorees by both organizations. In 2001, Southeastern advanced to the SLC championship match for the fifth straight year. Senior Becca Weingartner became the school’s all-time leader in points, goals and assists and became the first player to be named First team All-SLC four times. The 2002 squad won the SLC regular season title and set school records for goals (58), goals per game (2.76), points (167) and assists (51). Hornbuckle’s squad featured five All-SLC performers and three All-Louisiana selections, led by transfer Kim McNally. McNally rewrote the school and SLC record books on the way to earning SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors. Due to a rash of injuries and the loss of six starters in 2005, the Lady Lions suffered a 3-11-1 season. The Lady Lions bounced back to win the Southland Conference title in 2006, shutting out a school-record 11 opponents and allowing only two goals in conference play, while also rolling to a nine-match winning streak. In 2007, Southeastern posted another doubledigit victory total, finishing 10-7-3 and advancing to the SLC semifinals behind SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year Kristin McDonald. In 2008, the Lady Lions posted an 11-6-2 record and advanced to the Southland Tournament semifinals. Jenna Oney was named the Southland and LSWA Newcomer of the Year. The 2009 season saw the Lady Lions finish 135-2, win the Southland Conference Tournament and
earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to national seed Florida State in the opening round. Mayer was joined on the first team All-Southland Conference team by Southland Conference Tournament MVP Bockhaus, Louisiana Freshman of the Year Cooper, Santana and Candice Wallace. The team set or matched school and league single-season records for fewest goals allowed (13), shutouts (13) and lowest goals against average (0.63). The Lady Lions came back with a 15-3-3 showing in 2010, tying a school record for single-season victories and advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament final. Bockhaus, the league’s Player of the Year, was one of a league-high five Lady Lions on the All-Southland first team, along with Cooper, Santana, MacIntosh and Karly Dagys. Bockhaus finished the season as the Southland career record holder in shutouts, while Santana established a then-new league standard for assists. The 2011 season saw Southeastern post another double-digit win campaign under Hornbuckle, as the Lady Lions finished 11-7-1. Cooper and MacIntosh were repeat first team All-Southland selections, while Kelsey Salcido joined the pair on the All-Southland squad. Dagys was named to the All-Southland team as an honorable mention selection, after setting a singleseason school record with 12 assists. In 2012, Cooper was named first team All-Southland Conference for the fourth straight season and became the first player in school history to post four straight seasons of double-digit goals. Dagys also established herself as the school’s all-time leader in assists and Bockhaus set the new Southland standard for career shutouts. Prior to arriving in Hammond, Hornbuckle was an assistant coach at the College of Charleston, where he helped lead the Cougars to a berth in the 1996 NCAA National Tournament. At Charleston, Hornbuckle was responsible for a variety of aspects
within the program, including fund raising and the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy that served over 2,000 campers a year. Hornbuckle began his coaching career at his alma mater, Maryville (Tenn.) College, by taking on the role of assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs from 1991-93. He then moved to Brewton-Parker (Ga.) Southeastern Louisiana University WOMEN’S SOCCER
Southeastern Soccer Complex Opened in 2002, the Southeastern Soccer Complex provides the Lady Lions with one of the top facilities in the Southland Conference and the state of Louisiana. Located on the university’s North Campus, the 1,000seat facility features a digital LED scoreboard and a top-of-theline sound system. In addition to being used for Southeastern matches and practices, the Southeastern Soccer Complex also hosts several camps throughout the area. The field has also given the Lady Lions a definite “home-field” advantage, as Southeastern has recorded a 58-26-11 record in its 10 seasons playing at the facility. “The opening of the Southeastern Soccer Complex was a big step in the right direction for our program,” head women’s soccer coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “The field has a great root system and is one of the better playing surfaces in the area. With a few added amenities, we will have a first-class facility that the community and university can enjoy, that provides a showcase for North Campus and aids the future of our program.” The newest additions to the facility were on-line for the 2009 season. A new permanent structure that covers the benches and press area, as well as serves as a film tower has been added.
One of the nicer features is the grassy berm located on the left side of the Southeastern Soccer Complex entrance. During Lady Lion home games, Southeastern students and fans are known to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the view from the berm. Plans for adding a second berm on the right side are in place. In its inaugural season, the Southeastern Soccer Complex played host to the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament, marking the first time Southeastern had hosted a SLC postseason event. Southeastern also served as the host site for the 2004 and 2005 SLC Tournaments. In recent years, one of the priorities of Southeastern Athletics has been the improvement and renovation of the teams’ facilities. The Southeastern Soccer Complex is a prime example of that priority. In 2004, a concrete entrance way was laid, as well as a concrete pad for the benches and press row area.
