Young Southeastern Squad Looks To Keep Program On The Rise

F

resh off a trip to the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament, a talented recruiting class adds depth to a largely inexperienced Southeastern Louisiana squad. Southeastern returns four seniors and one junior, along with six sophomores that saw considerable playing time in their first season, from a team that qualified for the conference tournament after a two-year hiatus. Of the five newcomers joining the team for the 2013 season, all are front row-type players. “We don’t have a lot of experience coming back this year, so it’s very important we get the new girls comfortable,” assistant coach Priscilla Morgan said. “If we can get them comfortable with the lineups, school, the coach and put in some hard work, then I see us trying to climb out of the middle of the pack.” Senior Megan McMillin, an honorable mention for the All-Southland Conference team in 2012, returns as the favorite to once again fill the libero role for the Lady Lions. Last season, McMillin finished fifth in the Southland with an average of 4.10 digs per set. “We have a lot of players coming back that saw key time for us last season along the back row,” Morgan said. “Our back row is the foundation and their experience allows us to get into some more advance defensive systems.” Battling for playing time along the back row will be returners Brooke Balser, Katie Garrity, Cherish Krohn and Morgan Todd. Todd (2.02 d/s), Krohn (1.88 d/s) and Garrity (1.73 d/s) finished fourth through sixth on the team in digs last season, respectively. Senior Lindsey Young, who saw time as an

outside hitter and defensive specialist in 2012, returns as the leading setter for the Lady Lions. Currently seventh on the school’s all-time assists list,Young will pass former teammate Arianne Cruckshank into fifth-place on the list with her 119th assist of the season. “Lindsey is going to be a key player as she moves back into the setting role,” Morgan said. “Her command of the court will be key to how successful we are this season.” Young will be working with a largely inexperienced offensive front as Southeastern will have to replace two of its top three hitters from a season ago and will be without Veronica Turk (2.71 kills per set), the Lady Lions leading offensive returner, for at least the first month of the season as she recovers from a pre-camp injury. Gone are Courtney Donald (3.64 k/s), one of the top players in school history as well as the 2012 Louisiana Volleyball Player of the Year, and Tamra Grayson (1.84 k/s). Louisiana Tech-transfer Tiffany Thomas joins fellow sophomores Shelby Devlin (1.46 k/s, 0.93 blocks per set) and Mikayla Shippy (0.54 b/s), as well as junior Elizabeth Ramee (1.86 k/s in 2011) and senior Jessica Rauch (1.50 k/s) as the most experienced offensive-minded players. Freshmen Landry Bullock, Rachael Bunn, Lindsay Grace and Parrie Hartley will battle for playing time up front. The Lady Lions open the season at the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla., facing host Florida Atlantic, Bethune-Cookman and Jacksonville before returning home to host Tulane the day after Labor Day. Southeastern faces the Green Wave for the first time in more than five seasons.

After the home opener, Southeastern participates in the Memphis Invitational where it will face Western Carolina, Alabama A&M and the host Tigers. A match at Southern Miss wraps up the road portion of the non-conference slate. For the second-consecutive season, Southeastern will host the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic. Louisiana Tech, Nebraska-Omaha, Southern and Stetson will participate in the two-day tournament scheduled for Sept. 13-14 at the University Center. Five matches, two featuring the Lady Lions, will be played each day. Conference play begins following the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic as Southeastern travels to Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin for its first two Southland matches of the season. Seven of the Lady Lions’ first 11 conference matches are on the road, but Southeastern will begin a season-high seven-game homestand Oct. 24 as Abilene Christian travels to Hammond. Included in the homestand are a pair of non-conference matchups with Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State. The Lady Lions wrap up the regular season with a pair of matches at Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas before the conference tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas. “I think the schedule is a great fit for this team,” Morgan said. “We have some new teams in the Southland Conference and that will allow us to mix things up a bit. The Florida Atlantic and Memphis tournaments will stretch us, but allows us to be competitve. It’s also a great advantage to hosting the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic once again. We get that same competitive experience, but at home.” All four Southland newcomers will make the

2013 Southeastern Louisiana University Volleyball

2013 Outlook / Opponents trip to Southeastern with Incarnate Word (Oct. 26) following Abilene Christian. The New Orleans match (Nov. 2) is also part the extended homestand. Houston Baptist (Oct. 10) is the first of the four to make the trek into the University Center. While Southeastern will face two of its most distant conference foes in Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts twice each, it will only face Nicholls State, a 90 minute ride from campus, just once in 2013. The contest against the Colonels will take place, Oct. 5, in Thibodaux, La. “The girls are self learners,” Morgan said. “We should be competitive. I’m expecting at least a .500 season and it all depends on how quickly we learn.”

Athletic History S

outheastern Louisiana University’s storied athletic history dates back to 1930. Now, 15 intercollegiate sports strong, with nearly 330 student-athletes, the Lions are set to enter their 17th year of Southland Conference membership poised for academic and competitive growth into the next century. Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics competes at the Division I level as a member of the NCAA and the Southland Conference (SLC) and sponsors 15 varsity teams - eight women’s and seven men’s. For women, Southeastern sponsors soccer, volleyball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s athletics sponsored are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1997-98 year, Southeastern has won 23 conference championships, including five regular-season crowns in women’s soccer, four regular-season titles in women’s tennis and four men’s golf championships. Southeastern’s athletic history has many notable chapters including winning national championships in men’s outdoor track in 1975 and women’s basketball in 1976-77. Southeastern’s 1954 undefeated football team is well remembered as one of the finest in the school’s gridiron annals, and many former football players have gone on to distinguished careers in the NFL. The 1975 baseball team had a glorious year when they advanced to the Division II College World Series, finishing third in the nation. Today, Southeastern strives to be the best among its peers in the SLC and sister institutions in the proud state of Louisiana. It claimed the

Southland Conference Men’s All Sports trophy in 2008-09 and has led all Louisiana institutions in the Commissioners’ Cup standings in three of the past five years. Southland Conference championships offer Southeastern automatic bids to NCAA post-season play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s golf. Southeastern also made its mark in post-season NCAA Championship competition, with the golf team placing 23rd in the nation in the 1998 championship tournament, along with qualifying seven golfers for the NCAA championship tournament and advancing to six NCAA regionals (2000, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). The Lions baseball team played in two NCAA championship regionals in the 1990s and came within a game of returning to the postseason in both 2012 and 2013. The women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2009; while the track and field team has qualified numerous individuals for the NCAA Championship indoor and outdoor track meets and advancing student-athletes in cross country. Southeastern student-athletes have been named All-Americans in golf and men’s and women’s track and field, and have garnered numerous awards in the Southland and the state of Louisiana. Southeastern student-athletes have also earned Academic All-American recognition; most recently in softball and baseball, while two individuals were named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2012.

Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season, Artigues compiled a 276-188 won-loss record in his eight years in charge of the Southeastern baseball program. Under Artigues the Lions established themselves as a growing force in the region having posted marquee victories over LSU,Tulane, South Alabama and Southern Mississippi. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the

Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the National League Rookie of theYear Award.
