2015 Season Preview Lady Lions Poised to Contend for Southland Conference Title The Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team enters the 2015 season with a veteran squad and several newcomers set to make an impact. The Lady Lions return 21 letter winners and nine starters from last season’s team. SLU finished 12-8 overall, but an injury in conference play to All-Southland Conference goalkeeper Hope Sabadash led to the Lady Lions finishing 5-6 in Southland Conference play and exiting the Southland Conference Tournament in the first round after winning the tournament and advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2014. “We have a group that will drive us forward this season,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “When Hope went down last season, it changed the dynamic of our team midseason. This season, we expect to be a more cohesive unit.” Sabadash returns as one of five preseason All-Southland Conference performers on the 2015 roster. After a debut season that saw the Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native earn Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and Southland Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, her sophomore season didn’t
go as planned due to her midseason injury. Hornbuckle expects Sabadash to be back to her 2013 form in net for the Lady Lions.
low freshman Christian Cutura, Elizabeth McMurray and Vanessa Arzaluz will all be in the mix for field time.
“Hope is ready to go,” Hornbuckle said. “Her top end is so high and she works each day in training to get better. We’re expecting her to have a big year.”
Southeastern is picked to finish fourth in the Southland Conference standings. Hornbuckle believes several things have to happen for the Lady Lions to exceed those expectations.
The Lady Lions return the top eight scorers from last season’s team. Leading the way is junior Bri Singh (13 goals in 2014), who led the Southland Conference in scoring last season. Sophomore Maggie Ramsey (7 goals, 8 assists), senior Kayla Vera (7 goals), senior Gisenia Utreras (5 goals, 5 assists), junior Katie Noonan (2 goals, Southland-high 10 assists) and senior Cheyenne Maxwell (5 goals) are the other top returning scorers.
“We’ll have to be at our best every day,” Hornbuckle said. “And not just on game days, but in training and in the weight room. Plus, you always need a little luck. This is a very competitive conference and there are no easy matches.”
Maxwell is expected to shift to defender after playing the last two seasons in the midfield. The Sacramento, California native will be one of the leaders of the back line, along with fellow senior Maddie Allen. Hornbuckle also expects several newcomers to have an immediate impact. Sofia Olsson, a freshman from Lysekil, Sweden, figures to get plenty of playing time at forward, while fel-
Highlighting SLU’s non-conference schedule is a trip to defending national champion Florida State on Aug. 28. The Lady Lions’ first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance was a 4-1 loss in 2009 to the Seminoles in Tallahassee. “It will be great to play against the No. 1 team in the nation,” Hornbuckle said. “It will be a good test for our players to see how we adjust tactically and how we handle that bigtime environment. Mark Krikorian is arguably the best coach in the nation and we’re excited to see how we can compete against the best.”

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties selfimposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional

offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
