2014 Season Outlook The 2014 Southeastern Louisiana softball team will look to build on last year’s successful campaign that saw the Lady Lions set a singleseason school record for victories and make its first Southland Conference Tournament appearance since 2008.

In the outfield, Langlois will look to replace 2013 All-Southland seniors Michelle Duhe and Kelsey Nichols. The lone holdover is sophomore Katie Lacour, who posted a .380 batting average as a freshman – the highest by a Lady Lion since 2009 – on the way to earning All-Southland and All-Louisiana honors.

Southeastern returns five starters from the 2013 squad, which finished with a 32-22 squad. With three All-Southland Conference returners and a group of talented newcomers on this season’s roster, the Lady Lions have high hopes for the upcoming campaign. The Lady Lions will return three starters in the infield. At third base, preseason All-Southland third baseman Megan Moore returns to hold down the hot corner. A pair of seniors – second baseman Megan McCollum and first baseman Tori Sheppard – will provide Southeastern with a veteran right side of the infield. Sophomore Amber Sather, who led the team with 11 home runs and was named to the AllSouthland and All-Louisiana teams as a freshman, will split time with Sheppard at first and serve as the designated player when Sheppard is in the lineup.

Megan McCollum “We expect Tori to have a very good senior year,” Langlois said. “We trust her knowledge of our defensive philosophy and her ability to run our infield.”

“We lost a great leadoff hitter and centerfielder in Michelle,” Langlois said. “Fortunately for us, we have Katie to serve as a capable replacement in both spots. Katie had a tremendous freshman year and we expect her to continue to be a tough out day in and day out.” The favorites to handle the corner outfield spots are senior Jessie Browne and freshman Brittney Tschoepe. Senior Logane Fuselier, sophomore Amanda Livaudais, sophomore Sloan Jenkins and freshman Mychal Truxillo will all compete for playing time in the outfield.

Southeastern will have new starters at the key positions of shortstop and catcher. At short, junior Spencer Adkinson, a transfer from Faulkner State College, has the inside track on the starting position. Behind the plate, senior Caitlyn Fowler and freshman Lacey Fritz will compete for playing time. “Spencer is an outstanding athlete, who we think can step in and be an effective shortstop,” Langlois commented. “At this point, Caitlyn’s ahead of Lacey defensively, but Lacey is more dangerous at the plate. We expect both of them to see time early in the season.”

Katie Lacour “We feel like we need to find a way to have Jessie’s bat in the lineup day in and day out,” Langlois said. “The firepower that a middle of the order that features Jessie with Amber, Megan Moore and Lacey brings is pretty enticing. Brittney may be the best pure athlete on our team and she really stood out in the fall. We’re fortunate with our depth in the outfield. We have a talented group that all are capable of helping us which is a good problem to have.”

Amber Sather Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois is confident in his infield corps. “We’re excited about the talent we have returning in the infield,” Langlois commented. “We expect Amber and Megan Moore to be consistent producers in the heart of our lineup. Megan McCollum is as good defensively as any second baseman we’ve had here. She battled through injuries all last year and if this fall is any indication, we expect her production to return to the standard she set as a sophomore,”

In the circle, sophomore Taylor Bishop (8-9, 2.15 ERA) and senior Rachael Hellyer (11-2, 2.62 ERA) return to give a veteran pairing at the top of rotation. Junior Tori Stamper, junior Teresa Lemos, freshman Kasey Nielson and Adkinson could also see time in the circle, according to Langlois. “Taylor is our ace and she proved what she could do towards the end of last season,” Langlois said. “Rachael led us in wins last year and we expect her to be a valuable member of our rotation as a senior. Tori really impressed us in the fall and we think Kasey’s unique style will also make her useful in big situations.”

Southeastern was picked to finish fifth and sixth by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, respectively, in the Southland Conference preseason polls. The top six teams will advance to the Southland Conference Tournament, which this season will be hosted by the Lady Lions at North Oak Park. “We really feel good about where we are heading into the season, especially offensively,” Langlois said. “We’re going to need hold up in the circle, which we’re confident that we can. The opportunity to compete for a Southland Conference championship in front of our home fans is one we have to take advantage of.”

SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY SOFTBALL

Head Coach Pete Langlois 20th Year at Southeastern Southeastern Louisiana, 1992 After 19 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2013 squad returned to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fi veyear absence. Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led eight teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve.

In 2010, Southeastern junior infi elder Katie Duhe was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team as a second team selection. Duhe, a President’s Medal of Academic Excellence recipient, earned fi rst team Academic All-Southland honors in 2011. In 2009, Heather Sherrill was named to the All-Southland team for the third time and became the school’s leader in hits, RBI, doubles, extra-base hits and total bases. Duhe was named to the Academic All-District VI squad, marking the third of four straight years that one of Langlois’ players made the squad.

The upgrading of Southeastern’s home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick fence along the foul lines and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason leading up to the 2010 season, turf was laid in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New outdoor batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’s home fi eld is considered to be one of the top facilities in the SLC and the immediate area. Over the past 13 seasons, Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy of individual accolades including 47 all-SLC selections (six fi rst team) and 46 all-Louisiana picks. In 2004, Summer Delaneuville was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith - the school’s career leader in home runs - was named fi rst-team all-SLC and all-Louisiana. As a senior, Smith was once again named all-SLC. The three fi rst-team SLC picks in 2002 were the fi rst-ever in the Southland for Southeastern.

Southeastern Louisiana University SOFtball In 2008, Sherrill was a first team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who became the school’s career strikeout leader as a senior, made her third appearance on the All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhart was named to the Academic All-America team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team. The 2013 team returned to the league tournament for the first time since 2008, setting a new single-season school record with 32 victories. The Lady Lions eliminated league champion McNeese State from the tournament, earning its first postseason victory since 2002. Michelle Duhe, Kelsey Nichols, Katie Lacour, Megan Moore and Amber Sather all earned All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honors. In 2007, Ray was a first team All-SLC choice and Arica Rodriguez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year.

In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Conference and set the school’s then all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament while also setting numerous standards in the record books. And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor is no stranger. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions. Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeastern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under then-head coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions.

The 2001 season provided perhaps the finest season ever for Southeastern softball as Langlois’ Lions broke or tied 14 school and individual single-season and single-game records and placed five on the Southland Conference post season teams en route to the first winning season since 1998. Most noticeably, the squad tied the then all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as the Lady Lions knocked off the second and third-seeded teams finishing with a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors.

Langlois picked up the duties as interim head coach, finishing the season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995.

The 2002 season wasn’t quite as good as 2001, but the finish was almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the Southland Conference Tournament after a fifth place league finish. The Lions didn’t win quite as many games or set as many records as the ‘01 squad, but the 2002 team did, for the first time ever, make back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off top-seeded and tournament host Northwestern State in the semifinals to finish third in the event for the second straight year.

Langlois received a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (14) and Macie (10). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008 and the couple welcomed their first son, Jacques, in February 2011.

In his time at Southeastern, he has guided two All-South Region players, 29 All-Louisiana team members, 52 all-Conference players, 21 conference all-Academic team members and four CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees. Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge.

Southeastern Louisiana University SOFtball On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year prior, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 20092010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues.
