2016-17 Season Preview

Consistency The Key For Lions In 2017 Consistency is the buzz word for the Southeastern Louisiana golf team as it enters its spring season. The Lions had top-10 finishes in all four of its fall events but one bad round or series of holes kept them from finishing higher than sixth in any of them. Second-year Southeastern head coach Jake Narro is looking to eliminate or at least moderate those stretches in the spring. “It was definitely a little disappointing,” Narro said of the fall. “We had good falls from (sophomore) William Meyers and (senior) Paul Obermann) but we need to pick it up and play better as a group. The time is now and it would be nice to get off to a good start.” Southeastern returns four players who

were on the squad that finished second at the Southland Conference Championships in 2016 – Obermann, Meyers and seniors James Anstiss and Gustavo Leon. With the addition of juniors Joris Etlin and Bailey Smith and freshman Grant Glorioso, the Lions are looking to make another run at the conference title. “We’re capable of doing that,” Narro said. “I don’t think we are weaker than we were last year but we’re playing weaker. It’s time for some of the new guys to step up and for the guys who have been there to sharpen their games up a little bit.” Anstiss earned first-team All-Southland honors in 2016 after recording a teambest 73.76 stroke average over 29 rounds and tying for second in the conference tournament. Anstiss, who was also a

Southeastern seniors Paul Anstiss and Paul Obermann lead the Lions into the 2017 spring season. Anstiss received first-team All-Southland Conference and second-team All-Louisiana recognition after leading the Lions with a 73.76 stroke average in 2016. Obermann led the squad n in the fall with a 73.58 stroke average. He finished the 2016 campaign with a 74.14 stroke average in being named third-team All-Southland Conference for the second time in his Lions career.

second-team All-Louisiana selection, went on to capture the Louisiana Golf Association Amateur in June, becoming the first 72-hole wire-wire champion since at least 2004. Anstiss struggled at times in the fall, recording a 75.50 stroke average, but got off to a strong start in the spring with a tie for second at the All-American Intercollegiate. “James had such a good year last year and then he played a really heavy summer schedule and did well,” Narro said. “I think he came into this year with very high expectations and sometimes that is not a good thing. It’s tougher when you don’t play good. He’s a guy if he has a really good spring, can really feel good about his college golf career.” The same can be said by Obermann, who led the Lions in the fall with a 73.58 stroke average while finishing in the top 10 twice, including a tie for sixth at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. Obermann finished the 2016 campaign with a 74.14 stroke average in being named third-team All-Southland Conference for the second time in his Lions career. “Paul had a good fall and is on the verge, if he has a really good spring, of having one of the better years in the history of Southeastern, especially if he finishes off a couple of good events,” Narro said. “His stroke average in the fall was just a little over 73 and that is very good for college golf. He needs to shave that down just a little bit and if he can, he can really be proud of his progression from freshman to senior.” Narro said Meyers is capable of surpassing the accomplishments of both Anstiss and Obermann by the time is collegiate career is complete. Meyers had a pair of top 15s in the fall in compiling a 74.58 stroke average. He had a 75.65 stroke average as a freshman in 2016, with an 11th-place finish at the LSU Tiger Classic. “I really feel by the time we get to the end of this semester, William is going to be putting his nose in front of a lot of people, even though he is struggling a little bit right now,” Narro said. “Over the winter, he worked on his swing a little bit

and sometimes that makes you feel a little bit uncomfortable. He could be hitting it a little bit better but I just think he needs is a little tournament golf.” Leon had a pair of top 20 finishes in 2016 while finishing with a 76.58 average. He was limited to two tournaments in the fall and missed the first two spring tournaments with a bad back but was expected to return for the final two months of the season. Etlin and Smith, who had to sit out their first seasons at Southeastern under NCAA rules, both had up and down seasons during the fall. Etlin had a 76.58 average in four events, but had the low round of the first day at the LSU David Toms Intercollegiate for the Lions, a secondround 1-over 73. He also fired a 2-under 70 to climb 11 spots in the final round to finish in a four-way tie for 37th at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. Smith completed the fall with a 77.55 average but finished in a five-way tie for sixth at even-par 216 while playing as a non-scoring individual at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. Smith tied for the third-best score on the opening day of the tournament, a 3under 69 in the second round “They have got to find their consistency,” Narro said. “You’re not asking everybody to be the best player on the team. If they can just be solid four and fives, we can threaten in any golf tournament we

Southeastern will be counting on a trio of sophomores during the spring, including Joris Etlin and William Meyers. Meyers had a pair of top 15s in the fall in compiling a 74.58 stroke average. He had a 75.65 stroke average as a freshman in 2016, with an

go to.” Many of those tournaments are ones Southeastern is familiar with. The Lions return to the All-American in Houston after a one-year hiatus to open the season, then are back at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette. Southeastern is also slated to return to the UTSA/Lone Star Intercollegiate in San

Antonio, Texas, and another staple, the Old Waverly Intercollegiate in West Point, Miss. The Lions then visit the Jim West Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, before competing in the one-day LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge. That leads into the Southland Conference Championships which are back at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas. Along with defending champion McNeese, Narro said the main competition for the Lions could be Lamar and Sam Houston State. Narro said the key for the Lions is to score. He said the team’s ball striking is pretty good for the most part but it needs to do a better job of finishing around the hole. If it can and get off to a strong start in the spring, it can be in the hunt for its first conference title since 2013. “I expect us to definitely improve over the fall,” Narro said. “How much we improve is to be determined by how much momentum we can get going. “If we get off to a slow start, it’s going to be tough. If we can get off to a good, quick start and put the fall behind us, there is no reason we can’t head into the conference championship at the end of the semester thinking we have as a good a chance as anybody.”

Academics

Lions Strive For Academic Excellence The Southeastern golf shoots for low scores on the course and high scores in the classroom. The Lions had a cumulative team grade point average of 3.638 following the fall semester. All then-eight members had a 3.00 GPA or above, with freshman Grant Glorioso posting a perfect 4.0. Seniors Paul Obermann and James Anstiss and sophomore Joris Etlin were also over 3.6. Seven members – Obermann, Anstiss, Etlin, then-sophomore Bailey Smith and then-freshman William Meyers, along with 2016 graduates Lawrence Allan and Eamon Bradley, made the 2016 Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll with Anstiss being selected to the conference’s All-Academic team. And then-junior Gustavo Leon was nominated for the FeLions’ 2016 Sandy Goodwin Spirit Award – presented to an athlete for their work on the field, in the classroom and in the community. “Them being the competitors they are, they want to have the best team grade point average out of all the other teams at Southeastern,”

Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. “Everything they do, they want to be the best at. It’s just another part of their make up right there.” Excellence in the classroom as well as on the course has become a trademark of the Southeastern program. Eighteen Lions have been named Academic All-America in one capacity or another. Anstiss was the 24th Southeastern student-athlete to be named Academic AllSouthland. Three of those athletes – Brett Bergeron (2004), Matthew Carvell (2009) and Cedric Scotto – were the conference’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year. The program also had 15 members named Academic All-TAAC from 1992-96. Narro said that standard starts at home. “We put a lot of emphasis on it (academic) and luckily for me, these kids’ parents do as well,” Narro said. “If somebody comes up with less than a better grade, I don’t have to say much. I have mom and dad after them, so that’s real good for me. Good families lead to that and we’re lucky to have that as a team.”

Community Service Golfers Quick to Respond to Those in Need When their fellow golfers needed help following the heavy rains and flooding that hit southeastern Louisiana this past August, members of the Southeastern men’s golf team were quick to spring into action. Head coach Jake Narro and his players helped bring food and supplies to those in need and assisted in the cleaning of damaged homes. “It’s one thing to go help pick up litter in Hammond, but when you’re really helping someone’s life out, its’ easy to volunteer,” Narro said. The flood assistance was one of a number of volunteer programs the squad was involved in over the past year. Narro and team members Lawrence Allan, James Anstiss, Paul Obermann and Joris Etlin held golf lessons for the Hammond Kiwanis Club’s Aktion Club at Oak Knoll Country Club in March. Team members also helped out with the Junior Achievement’s trade show while Obermann served on the leadership staff of the Southeastern Louisiana Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. SAAC used funds it raised throughout the year to purchase more than $700 worth of toys and games for the House of Serenity Homeless Shelter’s Toy Drive in December. Most recently, team members volunteered at the Hammond Smokin’ Blues & BBQ Challenge. Narro said the golf program’s desire to vol-

unteer is a microcosm of the athletic program and the university as a whole. “That’s the school and the student body in

general,” Narro said. “In the athletic department, that’s a big goal of ours as well, across every team, and it narrows down right to us.”

NCAA infraction notice On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 20052006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-

athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on

Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university selfreported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
