2016 Season Preview
SLU squads off to quick start in ‘16 With the indoor season already off to a record-breaking start and 34 letterwinners returning, Southeastern head coach Sean Brady is looking for big things out of the Lions and Lady Lions in 2016. Among those 34 returning are three reigning All-Americans (seniors Jermisha Frazier, Jonathan Kinchen and Alexander Young), the 2015 Louisiana and Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year (Young), the 2015 Louisiana Freshman of the Year (Devin King), seven 2015 All-Louisiana selections, three Southland Conference outdoor and one indoor champions and nine outdoor and five indoor All-SLC selections. Add in a solid class of freshman and junior college transfers who have already made their mark and Brady knows both his squads have the potential make a run in the Southland this season. “Our men and women have to continue to encourage each other and if we are going to be a championship team, we have to grow and mature and our new people have to connect with the team members here and they have to embrace those guys,” Brady said. “If they do that and we get on a roll, I think we have a really good shot at winning the men’s championship. “With the women, I think we have an opportunity to be as good as we’ve ever been. If we finish in the top half of the conference, that’s going to be a win but I think this team is capable of doing better than that. Fourth or fifth is certainly within the grasp and if we have a great day and everybody hits on the right day, we could be a top three team.” The Southeastern men closed out the indoor regular season ranked No. 13 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s National Team Computer Rankings and sixh in the South Central Regional. Both the Lions and Lady Lions are strong in the throwing events. Young returns after earning second-team All-America honors after placing 10th in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was also the Southland outdoor champion in the shot put and the indoor champion in the weight throw. He has opened the indoor season with five wins while setting the school indoor record in the weight throw. Kinchen also received second-team AllAmerica honors after taking 14th in the hammer at Nationals. He won the SLC outdoor title in the hammer and placed fourth in the shot put while finishing second in the hammer and fifth in the shot in the indoor champion-
ships. He has a pair of weight throw wins already this indoor season. Those two are joined by fellow senior Jimmy LeBlanc, who received third-team AllSLC in the shot put while finishing fourth in the hammer and 15th in the discus at the outdoor meet. He was also fifth in the weight throw and at the conference indoor championships. On the women’s side, Frazier, the school’s outdoor record holder in the shot put, discus and hammer, was an honorable mention All-America selection after taking 17th in the hammer. She captured the outdoor conference title in the shot put while placing second in the event at the indoor championships. Frazier opened the 2016 indoor season where she left off the outdoor, breaking her own weight throw record at the season-opening LSU Purple Tiger Invitational. She also owns the Lady Lions’ indoor shot put record. King also opened the indoor season in record-breaking style, eclipsing the school’s pole vault mark in each of his first two meets. He had closed out the 2015 outdoor regular season with three straight wins and took 18th at the NCAA East Preliminaries. The Lions have already showed they are going to be much stronger in some areas than they were in 2015. Junior Steven Barze, a transfer from South Plains Junior College, shattered the school’s long-standing indoor long jump mark on his first attempt as a Lion and was named the USTFCCCA’s National Athlete of the Week for the first week of the indoor season. Senior Andre Colebrook, who joined the Lions for the outdoor season in 2015, broke the school’s 800-meter mark at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational while junior Dontrell Lyons shattered the 400 mark at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational. The 4x400 relay has twice broken the school record while the 4x800 set a new standard at the Purple Tiger. “On the men’s side, we have got some veterans who are here, guys that are juniors and seniors,” said Brady of the Lions who won the team competition at the Cherry & Silver. . “That’s the strength of our team and that’s across the board. Last year going into the indoor season, our throws were really deep and it was a year when some of the other teams were down in that event area. “This year, the throws are going to be better across the board. In this conference people see holes and gaps and they start recruiting to those weaknesses and I see and hear from the other coaches it’s going to be a lot more
competitive in those areas. However, we are going to be much more competitive in some other areas. We’ve gone out and recruited to our needs.” Brady said the women’s team has also improved a great deal, especially regarding depth. That depth has been evident early, especially in the sprints and pole vault. The Lady Lions had four of the top six finishers in the 400 at the Bayou Bengal, including a victory by senior Domonique White. White was also part of a quartet in the top seven in the 200 at the Purple Tiger, a group highlighted by a win by senior Nakiya Smith. The Lady Lions’ 4x400 and 4x800 relays both had top five finishes in the opening meets. Sophomore Clarrisa Smith and junior Jenna Hildebrand had top-10 finishes in the mile. Senior Sharron-Ann Ourso and junior Whitney Adams went one-two in the pole vault at the Bayou Bengal while that pair plus senior Addison Martinez (third) placed in the top three at the Purple Tiger and the McNeese Indoor. Other Lady Lions having strong starts to the season were junior Cydney Moreau in the long jump, junior Raeven Scott and freshman Shekira Price in the high jump, freshman Jaslyn Bowman in the 200, junior Lekesha Jelks in the 800 and freshman Tayla Celestine in the 60meter hurdles. “On the women’s side, we’re a young team,” Brady said. “We signed several young women who were state champions and on the best teams in Louisiana. I have to give (assistant) coach (Corey) Mistretta as recruiting coordinator who really came in and hustled and signed two or three. If we can 15 points or better from Misha at the conference meet and then have the other women in the sprints, the short sprints, long sprints and relays, we’re going to be competitive.” Brady expects the Southland Conference Championships to again be competitive this season and said it could come down to which programs best handle the momentum and emotional swings of the day of the meet, “In this sport, you never know how it’s going to fall out,” Brady said. “When you have 13 teams competing at one time, different event areas are stronger. Some people win and move up two spots and knock people down. “With the ebb and flow of the conference meet you have to be ready on the day and we do a really good job of preparing our kids and getting them ready on the day. If we stay healthy, grow as a team, stay competitive for the next few weeks, I like our chances.”

Head Coach Sean Brady
Sean Brady Head Coach
15th Year at Southeastern Louisiana • Southeastern Louisiana, 1994 Three-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year Sean Brady enters his 15th season as Southeastern Louisiana’s track and field coach in 2016. Brady, a former Southeastern pole vaulter, was named the Southland Conference Men’s Indoor, and Outdoor, Coach of the Year after the Lions swept the indoor and outdoor team championships in 2014. Shortly after winning the men’s conference title in 2009, Brady made program history once again as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named him the 2009 South Central Region Co-Men’s Head Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Arkansas’ Chris Bucknam. The national honor came on the heels of being named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Cross Country Coach of the Year. Under the tutelage of Brady and his staff, Southeastern student athletes have constantly attacked the school record books while advancing to postseason competition. In the past 14 seasons, 119 student-athletes have qualified for NCAA Regionals, 25 student-athletes have competed in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 11 Lions earning All-America honors and Janice Ezegbunum earning Academic All-America honors. Forty-six student-athletes have captured Southland Conference individual championships. Brady began his college coaching career as a volunteer assistant at LSU, where he served two seasons under head coach Pat Henry. During his tenure in Baton Rouge, Brady coached several world class sprinters and eventual professional jumpers on the men’s squad while assisting with meet preparation. After two seasons with the Tigers, Brady moved to Utah State in 1998 where he worked as an assistant and coached a pair of Big West Conference championship teams and developed a pair of Aggie school record holders. Prior to his coaching career, Brady proved to be a standout student-athlete. The Alexandria native attended Northwestern State for one year where he played defensive back for the Demon football team, before transferring to Southeastern. Brady spent three years in Hammond competing in the pole vault and earned a personal-best mark of 16 feet-5 inches as a senior. After earning his degree in Kinesiology at Southeastern in 1994, Brady went on and earned his Post Graduate Degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where he taught athletics classes in the sports science curriculum and trained professional athletes. Brady graduated from Alexandria Senior High School where he was a district and regional champion in the pole vault. The son of James and Karen Brady, both Southeastern alums, Sean Brady holds certification from USA Track and Field as a Level I and II coach. He and wife Ashley have one son, Noah.

NCAA infraction notice
On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 20062007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective studentathletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”

Campus Living
• Campus living is convenient, smart and fun! Southeastern students have the opportunity to meet and mingle with people of different backgrounds, interests, ideas, experiences, and goals. These include an online RN to BS degree in nursing, supply chain management, engineering technology with mechanical, construction, computer science, and industrial technology concentrations, an online degree in disaster relief management, and doctoral programs in educational leadership and advanced nursing practice.
