2016 Season Preview

Lady Lions Ready to Run Gauntlet

Coming off a second Southland Conference Tournament title and NCAA Regional appearance in three seasons, Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer head coach Blake Hornbuckle said he can relate to Harry Callahan in “Dirty Harry” as the Lady Lions enter the 2016 campaign. “No game is easy, every game is tough,” Hornbuckle said of Southeastern’s schedule. “It’s a lot like the gauntlet in “Dirty Harry” where you have everybody shooting at you from both sides and you’re trying to get to city hall.” Southeastern survived the gauntlet of a demanding schedule and a host of injuries in 2015 to finish 13-5-4 overall and 6-3-2 in the Southland. The Lady Lions then swept through the conference tournament, defeating Sam Houston State in a shootout for their fourth title. Southeastern advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the third time before losing at nationally-ranked Auburn 1-0 in the first round. Now with seven starters returning and the addition of nine heralded newcomers, Hornbuckle and the Lady Lions are looking to make another run to the postseason. “The goal is to blend together quickly to give us a great result on the field,” Hornbuckle said. Leading Southeastern’s cause is the return of senior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash, the first All-American in the program’s history. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native is on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List after leading the Southland in goals against average (0.83) and shutouts (10) in 2015. “She is great at high balls, fantastic off the floor and very organized.,” Hornbuckle said. “She’s really a complete goalkeeper. We’re extremely happy she has received the honors she has and we are looking forward to her having a great senior season to help drive us forward.” Sabadash is one of seven seniors returning for Southeastern. Forward Marissa Rodrigues was among the team leaders last season with four goals and 12 points. Katie Noonan will anchor the backline after seeing time at both defender and at the midfield. She will be joined on the backline by Lauren Lorentz. Amber Lasher will play a key role in the midfield. Casey Jeanfreau is a more than capable backup for Sabadash in the net. And forward/midfielder Casey Peacock, who made the 2013 Southland All-Tournament team, returns after missing the past two seasons with injuries. Defense was a major reason for Southeastern’s success in 2015 as the Lady Lions led the league in shutouts and tied for the lead in goals

Southeastern celebrated its fourth Southland Conference Tournament championship in 2015. The Lady Lions advanced to their third NCAA Regional before losing at nationally-ranked Auburn, 10. Southeastern will again be deep on the backline with Noonan, Lorentz and Peacock being joined by a pair of 2015 honorable mention All-Southland selections in junior Maddie Kresevic and sophomore Christina Cutura, along with junior Lauren Babcock and sophomore Elizabeth McMurray. The unit will also be boosted by the addition of freshmen Rebecca Gillett, Lenny Yekka and Caitlin LaMarche. Southeastern is looking to replace three of its top four scorers from 2015, including AllSouthland selection Gisenia Utreras who finished among the league leaders in goals, assists and points. Junior Maggie Ramsey returns after finishing second on the team with seven goals and 15 points. Sophomore Sofia Olsson is also back after recording three goals and five assists in 14 matches as a freshman. The Lady Lions could also get immediate help from freshman Amber Marinero. Among those setting up the offense from the midfield are Peacock, Lasher, Kresevic and McMurray; sophomores Vanessa Arzaluz, and Payton Colson; and newcomers Ylva Svendsen, Linda Karlsson, Alexandra Gundersen and Caroline Lee. The squad will have to come together quickly as Southeastern opens the season at Memphis, a potential top-30 team. “Memphis is always strong and it will be a wonderful test for us to see where we are early in the year,” Hornbuckle said. The Lady Lions then visit Jackson State

before opening up a 10-match home slate with games against Arkansas State, ULM and Mississippi Valley State. After trips to instate rivals Louisiana-Lafayette and Southern, Southeastern closes out the pre-conference schedule at home against Georgia State. The Southland Conference schedule features games at home against McNeese, Houston Baptist, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston, 2015 SLC regular season champion Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls. The Lady Lions also visit Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian, Lamar, Central Arkansas and Northwestern State. The conference tournament is scheduled for Nov. 3-6 at TAMCC. “I think any of the teams can be in the mix, from one to 12,” Hornbuckle said of the conference in 2016. “All the teams can compete. I think that’s a great testament to the parity in our conference.” Southeastern has won four Southeastern regular season titles in addition to its four tournament championships in Hornbuckle’s 18 years at the helm.

conference in goals against average (0.83) and shutouts (10) and finishing third in saves (107). Sabadash enters the 2016 season tied for second in Southeastern history with 24 shutouts and is fourth with 279 career saves. “I think it’s her mentality,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said of what makes Sabadash successful. “She works to get better every day. She is extremely humble. She wants to get out and go to work. I think it’s a fantastic mentality, her work rate,

her ability to adapt to the situation around her, whether it be teams who try to serve balls in or teams who try to penetrate or take longrange shots. Whatever it is, she has her team organized to make the play.” Pushing Sabadash in practice is senior Casey Jeanfreau (Greenville, S.C.). Jeanfreau saw action in the Southland Tournament championship game last season. As a sophomore, she played in 10 matches, making eight starts in place of an injured Sabadash. She finished the

season with a 1.70 goals against average and 41 saves. “We’re fortunate enough to have Hope Sabadash and Casey Jeanfreau both return,” Hornbuckle said. “They push each other very hard in training and each is each other’s number one fan. We’re extremely happy that we have a talented, cohesive group of goalkeepers.” Junior Matilda Bylund (Kramfors, Sweden), who previously played for Feather River College, will redshirt in 2016.

DEFENDERS

and received the league’s Defensive Player of the Week once. Senior Casey Peacock (Douglassville, Ga.) returns after missing the past two seasons with injuries. She recorded seven goals, six assists and 20 points in 2013. Senior Lauren Lorentz (Luling, La.) has played in 47 matches while junior Lauren Babcock (Canton, Mich.) has played in nine. Southeastern has also brought in a trio of freshmen who could see immediate playing time in Rebecca Gillett (Christchurch, New Zealand), Lenny Yekka (Mississauga, Ontario) and Caitlin LaMarche (Laguna Niguel, Calif.).

“Cutura is extremely physical, very good in the air and is extremely good one-on-one defending,” Hornbuckle said. “Katie Noonan is going to anchor the back line for us. She’s very dangerous going forward with the ball and great with service, very organized and strong in the air. “Casey Peacock is another one who could find herself centrally with the same skill set. She’s coming back from two years of injury and we’re happy to have her back. She’s going to be very good in the air and is going to be a force to deal with physically. “Rebecca Gillett will be one

who we can play both centrally and out wide in the back. She’s good up and down the line and can use both feet and will provide a strong physical presence. “Lenny Yekka is going to be extremely difficult for people to deal with on the flank and getting out of the back with her speed and athletic ability. She’s comfortable on either side of the field as is Lauren Babcock who is very smart, very skillful and can distribute. Lauren Lorentz has a very athleticism about her game in the back and Caitlin LaMarche can play comfortably on both sides of the field.”

MIDFIELDERS

Vanessa Arzaluz (Sparks, Nevada) finished with three goals and eight points in 20 matches. And Payton Colson (Flowood, Miss.) saw action in two matches in 2015. A strong core of freshmen will challenge those veterans.Alexandra Gundersen (Reading, Pa.), Linda Karlsson (Norrkoping, Sweden), Caroline Lee (Tryon, N.C.) and Ylva Svendsen (Bergen, Norway) will all have chance to see the pitch early. “Ylva Svendsen) is extremely talented with the ball at her feet,” Hornbuckle said. “She is very mobile and distributes the ball well. Linda Karlsson will play a similar role and is very smooth on the

ball and fluid. She likes to distribute and open the field up. She can play out wide or center mid. Alexandra Gundersen will be a great player in the midfield for us. She’s very mobile, a very good organizer and is very technical with the ball. “Casey Peacock can play not only on the backline but also in the midfield too with her great presence and ball handling ability. Amber Lasher can play out wide and can play centrally. She has a high work rate and is good at closing people down. “Maddie Kresevic times attacks extremely well, is good in the air and seems to be in the right place at the right time. Elizabeth

McMurray is another one who can play virtually any role. She will be great at closing players down, closing space down and connecting on passes. “Kim Porche is good in the air and distributes well. Vanessa Arzaluz can play at the central mid and can play out wide. There’s a grit to her and she has a determination that she is going to get the job done. She’s really good at service and very good at putting pressure on players. And Caroline Lee will exhibit very good speed and work great on the flank for us.”

FORWARDS

the team with four goals and was tied for fourth with 12 points. Sophomore Sofia Olsson (Lysekil, Sweden) scored three goals and had 11 points despite being limited to 14 matches. That trio will be joined by freshman Amber Marinero (West Covina, Calif.). “We have some great options up top because we have a lot of versatility on the team,” Hornbuckle

said. “I believe that Olsson, Ramsey, Rodrigues and Marinero will all challenge to be up front immediately. We’re fortunate to get Sofia back from an injury and look forward to her being healthy from the start to really put pressure on people with her great presence and talents. “Maggie will be fantastic out wide going at people. She’s very

skillful on the ball, very smart and can smash a ball. Amber just gets better and better around the goal. We’re excited to have her come in as a freshman and really get time immediately. And Marisa is fantastic at cutting in and hitting that shot that is just difficult for goalkeepers to handle or serving a long range ball that somebody can get on the end of.”

Southeastern has had a great run of goalkeepers in its history, from Allison Holladay, Nicole Hemig and Crista Wood to Holly Moran and Lacey Bockhaus. But senior Hope Sabadash (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) may have raised the standard after becoming the first Lady Lion to earn NSCAA Division I All-America status in 2015. Sabadash also earned All-Central Region and All-Southland honors and was named the co-Louisiana Player of the Year after leading the Defense has been a staple of Southeastern in recent years with the Lady Lions pacing the Southland in goals allowed and shutouts in 2015. Southeastern will again have a multitude of players who can play in the backline, led by senior Katie Noonan (Renton, Wash.). Noonan is being moved after splitting 19 matches at defense and in the midfield in 2015. She was named second team All-Southland as a sophomore after leading the league with 10 assists. Christina Cutura (Pearl River, La.) earned honorable mention AllSouthland honors as a freshman Southeastern has a number of options at the midfield with a good mix of veterans and newcomers. Senior Amber Lasher (Norco, Calif.), who has played in 62 matches in her career, and Peacock have the most experience. Junior Maddie Kresevic (Solon, Ohio) received honorable mention AllSouthland Conference and was twice honored as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week in 2015. Sophomore Elizabeth McMurray (Bakersfield, Calif.) started 10 of 12 matches while junior Kim Porche (Luling, La.) has appeared in seven matches in her career. Sophomore The forward position is another area with depth for the Lady Lions. Junior Maggie Ramsey (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) made the All-Louisiana team for the second time in her career after finishing second on the team with seven goals. Senior Marisa Rodrigues (San Ramon, Calif.) tied for third on

2016 Southland Conference Preview

Lady Lions Picked 2nd, 3rd FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Confer-

ence preseason polls bear out just how tough the league will be in 2016. While Stephen F. Austin is the early favorite by both the league coaches and sports information directors to win its sixth-straight regular season conference title, just five points separate the next four contenders in the coaches poll and the following three in the SIDs rankings. Southeastern, which returns seven starters from its Southland Tournament championship squad, was picked to finish tied for second with Abilene Christian by the coaches and third by the SIDs, receiving a first-place vote from each. Stephen F. Austin received nine first-place votes from each group. Abilene Christian received two first-place votes from the SIDs and one from the coaches, while Sam Houston State was picked first by one coach. Stephen F. Austin, which lost to Southeastern in the Southland Tournament semifinals, picked up 118 points from the coaches and 117 from the SIDs. But the race is close from there in the coaches poll with Southeastern and Abilene Christian both receiving 98 points, Sam Houston 97 and fifth-place Houston Baptist 93. Central Arkansas was sixth with 61 points and was followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (51), Lamar (47), Northwestern State (39), McNeese (38), Nicholls (31) and Incarnate Word (21). In the SID poll, Abilene had 101 points and was followed by Southeastern with 97 and Houston Baptist with 96. Sam Houston, which lost to Southeastern in the conference tournament finals, was fifth with 88. Central Arkansas was next with 63 points and was followed by Corpus Christi (57), Lamar (54), Northwestern State (39), McNeese (36), Nicholls (30) and Incarnate Word (14).

Sabadash, Noonan on All-SLC preseason teams

Two of the returning stalwarts of Southeastern’s league-leading defense were honored by being named to the preseason All-Southland Conference team. Senior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash was selected to the first team while senior defender Katie Noonan was named second team in a vote by the conference coaches. It is the third straight preseason all-conference selection for Sabadash and the second straight for Noonan. Both Sabadash and Noonan are no strangers to receiving accolades. Sabadash became the first Lady Lion to be named a NSCAA All-American in 2015 while also garnering All-Central Region honors. The Mississauga,

Ontario, Canada native was also named the Louisiana Co-Player of the Year and was selected as the MVP of the Southland Tournament. She also made All-Southland first team for the second time in her career. Sabadash led the Southland with a .83 goals against average and 10 shutouts and was third with a .849 save percentage and 107 saves. She was at her best in the Lady Lions’ biggest matches, making seven saves in a 3-0 loss at No. 1 Florida State early in the regular season and 11 against Auburn. Noonan, meanwhile, is coming off a season in which she had a pair of assists while helping the Lady Lions limit opponents to 0.86 goals a match. The Seattle, Washington native made second team All-Southland in 2014 after leading the league with 10 assists, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.

Southeastern Athletics Infraction Notice On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties selfimposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes

in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
