ith a roster featuring experienced returning letterwinners and talented newcomers, the Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team looks to continue the climb up the Southland Conference ladder. After coming off an 11-17 record, their best showing in five seasons, Southeastern looks for greater things in 2009 as it returns five starters from a year ago. “We feel good about the returners we have on the roster and we expect to be solid at every position,” fourth-year coach Julie Langford commented. “Our returning players worked extremely hard in the offseason and we’re excited to see that effort pay off. Our goal is to return to the Southland Conference Tournament and get a taste of the postseason.” Seniors Lauren Mayer and Jessica Srajer are the top returning attackers for the Lady Lions. Srajer, who hails from Vancouver, Wash., averaged 2.56 kills per set in 2008. Mayer, a Metairie native, posted a 2.36 kill per set average, while also ranking 10th in the Southland Conference in service aces per set. Newcomers Taylor Buckner (Columbus, Ga.) and Kaprice Glover (Brighton, Colo.) are expected to help provide the Lady Lions with a more potent offensive attack. “We believe we will have much more power on offense this season,” Langford said. “The outside hitters we are bringing in will give us a stronger left side and more flexibility to do some different things on the right side.” Southeastern will return two proven setters in junior Katie Collins and sophomore Arianne Cruckshank. Collins, a Phoenix, Ariz. native, averaged 7.83 assists per set a season ago, while Guernville, Calif. product Cruckshank recorded 7.03 assists per set. “We feel very confident in both Katie and Arianne at setter,” Langford claimed. “They both were solid performers for us last season and have worked extremely hard in the offseason.” At middle blocker, junior Julie Elliott and sophomore Paige Dollison are the top returners. A Katy, Texas native, Elliott was

second on the team with 0.70 blocks per set, followed closely by Valley, Neb. product Dollison’s 0.63 block average. Six-foot-plus freshmen Alexis Braghini (Champaign, Ill.) and Courtney Donald (Tomball, Texas) are expected to have an immediate positive impact at the position. “We have two solid returners at middle blocker and we are adding two student-athletes that will give us needed size,” Langford stated. “That size will help in the middle and we expect our defense at the net to be much improved.” Southeastern also features a pair of talented student-athletes at libero in senior Margaret Pittman and junior Alex Greer. Greer, a Valrico, Fla. native, led the team with 2.83 digs per set last season. Pittman, who hails from Slidell, averaged 2.10 digs per set as a junior after ranking 24th in the nation in service aces as a sophomore. “We have a lot of confidence in Alex and Margaret,” Langford said. “Their play is pivotal to our passing and backcourt defensive production.” Southeastern will open the 2009 season at the Flo Hyman Invitational in Houston, Texas, which runs Aug. 28 and 29 and will see the Lady Lions take on top 100 programs Baylor, Indiana and Houston. The Lady Lions open their home schedule on Sept. 1, hosting Alcorn State. Other non-conference opponents include Texas Tech, Bowling Green and Chattanooga, while Southeastern will also square off against in-state foes UNO, Southern and Grambling. “This is definitely our most difficult non-conference schedule since I’ve been 2009 Southland Conference Preseason here,” Langford said. “We’re excited to be competing against better completion and we feel we will be better prepared for Southland play.” 2009 SLC Preseason Coaches’ Poll:

ulie Langford begins her fourth season as head coach of the Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team. In three seasons, Langford has compiled a 25-62 record, increasing the team’s total victories each season. Following a 4-27 record in 2006, Langford guided a Lady Lion team to a 10-18 campaign. In 2008, with a team mixed with key veterans and a solid recruiting class, Langford’s team finished 11-17 overall. While the Lady Lions have made strides on the court during Langford’s tenure, they have also excelled in the classroom compiling a 3.3 team grade point average in the past academic year. Thirteen members of the 2008 squad posted a 3.0 or higher GPA for the year. The former head women’s volleyball coach for Belhaven College, Langford came to Southeastern after engineering an impressive turnaround for the Blazers’ program in a mere three seasons. Langford, a native of Los Angeles, joined the Blazers as an assistant coach for the 2001 season where she coordinated recruiting, scouting, practice and game-day operations. She was elevated to head coach in 2002 and served in that role for the next three years. From 2002-2004, Langford compiled an overall record of 29-66. She doubled her first year’s record (4-28) compiling an 8-24 mark in 2003 and had a breakthrough season in 2004 with a 17-14 record. During her time as head coach at Belhaven, Langford expanded recruiting coverage to a national level, increased athletic aid awarded to the program and improved athlete retention. The Blazers’ overall team G.P.A. improved from 3.0 to 3.49 during her tenure and she helped guide three Gulf Coast Athletic Conference players as well as five National Asso-

This is Southeastern

S

outheastern is the third largest university in Louisiana, offering 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs that are nationally accredited. Southeastern now offers five new postgraduate degree programs, including the university’s first doctoral program in Educational Leadership and unique master’s degree programs in Integrated Science and Technology, Organizational Communication, Applied Sociology, and the Master of Arts in Teaching. Our classes are small in size, interaction is high, and faculty, not graduate students, teach 99 percent of our classes. Southeastern also is one of the major providers of distance education among state universities. Our main campus and satellite centers in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany and Livingston parishes are equipped to handle e-learning activities, and students have access to computer labs in classroom buildings, residence halls, the War Memorial Student Union and the Sims Memorial Library. A Student Help Desk is available by phone, and Student Productivity Services allows students to check out laptops, external drives, digital cameras, and other equipment. The Southeastern Channel, Southeastern’s education access cable channel operated in cooperation with Charter Communications and airing in several area parishes, offers original programming and telecourses that can be taken for college credit.

Southeastern’s Honors program offers an alternative academic track in all departments and majors, and our Study Abroad program allows our students to explore the globe. Southeastern provides the opportunity for all its students to be successful in whatever they choose to do. Internships, undergraduate research opportunities and service learning programs help prepare students with real-world learning experiences. Southeastern Alumni are successful in all areas of business, government, and entertainment. Internationally and nationally recognized Southeastern alumni include ABC “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, U.S. Federal Judge James Brady, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo. Founded in 1925, Southeastern’s campus and facilities have grown to meet the needs of its students in today’s technological environment. In recent years, Southeastern has undergone a $140 million construction program that has transformed the campus, including new residential facilities, classroom and lab buildings, and a student activity center. Yet our campus still maintains its southern Louisiana charm, nestled in ancient oaks, pines, magnolias and camellias. Southeastern’s Turtle Cove Environmental Research Center, located at Pass Manchac, offers students an ideal facility for wetlands research. In

recent years, Southeastern has received nearly $3 million in federal funds to enhance environmental research programs at the facility. Another important benefit provided by Southeastern is our textbook rental system. Southeastern is the only university in Louisiana, and one of just a few in the nation where you can rent, not buy, your textbooks. At Southeastern, you pay a small rental fee at the beginning of the semester, and simply return your books at the end. You will still have to purchase some paperbacks and workbooks, but you’ll save a bundle in comparison to buying all your textbooks and then selling them back at a fraction of their cost. Southeastern provides a wide range of health services on campus. Southeastern’s Health Center has full-time nurses Monday through Friday for minor incidents, and if your case is a bit more serious, physicians make “campus calls” every afternoon to diagnose and treat minor illnesses. Our Counseling Center provides individual or group counseling to help our students to get back up when stressful times in college or life in general gets them down. Career Services provides career and educational counseling, help in choosing a major and finding a job. Southeastern’s intramural and recreation program includes activities from group fitness programs to flag football. Tennis courts, a swimming pool and Southeastern’s new 85,000 square foot facility, the Claude B. Pennington Jr. Student Activity Center, also provide students plenty of other opportunities to stay fit and healthy. With more then 80 organizations, every

Southeastern student can find a niche. Our school newspaper, The Lion’s Roar, and our yearbook, Le Souvenir, welcome students interested in journalism. KSLU, Southeastern’s radio station and the Southeastern Channel provide experience for students who want to go on the air, just for fun or for on-thejob-training. Dynamic organizations such as the Campus Activities Board and Residential Services sponsor fun events like Gumbo Ya-Ya serving up tons of gumbo in the fall. Homecoming in October is a weeklong celebration full of zany student fun and games, a huge bonfire and spirited parade. When strawberries ripen in local fields, the sweetest and juiciest star in their own “Strawberry Jubilee,” which also includes cool games, hot bands, and free eats like red beans and rice and the biggest strawberry cake you’ve ever seen. Fanfare, Southeastern’s annual arts festival, opens the year-long season of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts, our beautifully renovated historic theater in downtown Hammond. Fanfare and the Columbia enhance the quality of life in the north shore region by offering some of the best in dance, exhibits, films, jazz, lectures, music and theater. Featured artists have included world-renowned celebrities such as poet-actress-author Maya Angelou, actor James Earl Jones, astronaut James Lovell, and the legendary Pete Fountain, as well as our own talented students and faculty. Students also have the opportunity to hear the best and brightest new musicians, artists and actors from all over the world for free, or at specially discounted student prices.

Campus Living Campus living is convenient, smart and fun! Southeastern students have the opportunity to meet and mingle with people of different backgrounds, interests, ideas, experiences, and goals. Southeastern’s campus provides dining halls, library, bookstore, health center, swimming pool, tennis courts, student activity center and a student union with a game room, snack bars, and post office. In fall 2005, the university opened the final phase of our $55 million housing program for students that features eight new state-of-the-art residence halls. All housing on campus, including the apartment-style Southeastern Oaks and the Village, features the amenities today’s students seek such as privacy, cable TV, and wireless Internet. With its School of Nursing located in Baton Rouge and satellite campuses in Walker and Mandeville, Southeastern continues its mission of improving the level of education and quality of life for the citizens of the Florida Parishes. Through each center’s programs, adults and children will attain long-term economic benefits associated with improved education; become more comfortable with reading, writing, math, science, and technology; and become better informed on environmental issues in modern society.

The highlight of Baldwin’s tenure at Southeastern came when he guided the Lions to its first Southland Conference Golf Championship in 1998, leading the team to a 37-stroke victory and qualifying for the NCAA Championships, where Southeastern finished 23rd in the nation. A native of Goodrich, Michigan; Baldwin has been associated with the Southeastern golf program since joining the team as a freshman in 1983. He quickly established himself as a winner by guiding the team to a school-record four tournament championships. Baldwin, 43, is the father of two daughters, Brienne (16) and Hailey (15).

Community Interaction

S

ince Julie Langford’s arrival in 2006, the Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball program has taken an active role in giving back to the greater Hammond community. Every year, the Lady Lions participate in community service projects starting with preseason projects during training camp such as visiting the Hammond nursing home to help lead area seniors in activities. Community service projects such as weekend work outings for Habitat for Humanity continue year round as Langford and the Lady Lions look for new ways to give back to the area. “These projects have been a great experience for our players,” Langford said. “It helps bring the girls together as a team and it has helped them become more aware of the larger local community. Our hope is that our players will take this opportunity to learn and continue to develop as people in there time here in Hammond.”
