SCHOOL HISTORY Bishop DuBourg opened St. Louis Academy on Second Street as a school for young men School was moved to a new building on Ninth and Lucas streets

Curriculum was designed to meet recognized college entrance examinations

Basement recreation room and Jesuit chapel were added

Adjacent three acres of land were purchased

St. Louis University High School is the second oldest Jesuit high school in the U.S. and part of a network of schools around the world infused with the philosophy of education established by St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Designed to foster the development of the whole person, SLUH’s curriculum aims to instill young men with the knowledge and the spiritual, moral and aesthetic values that will prepare them for a life of high achievement, community service and personal fulfillment.

As a college preparatory school, one of SLUH’s primary goals is to develop in each student the academic skills necessary to successfully continue his education after graduation. The rigorous, fouryear, technology-enhanced curriculum is tailored to achieve this result while simultaneously instilling intellectual curiosity and a worldview in keeping with the Jesuit tradition. Students can choose from more than 100 elective courses, including courses for college credit through Saint Louis University’s 1818 Advanced College Credit Program. Students may also take Advanced Placement (AP) courses and examinations in order to earn college credit or placement at an advanced level for a college freshman. The Fine Arts Department is dedicated to fostering the creativity of our students by offering a wide range of studio and performing arts, including 2-D Design, Advanced Ceramics, Acting, Concert Chorus, Jazz Band and Dance, among other courses. Our faculty aims to find a balance between intuition and training, between imagination and discipline. We recognize our students as both potential creators and patrons of the arts. We appreciate the unique style, gifts, insights and humanity of each individual.

A team of school counselors, college counselors and learning consultants provide students personalized guidance in developing study habits, selecting courses, examining career choices and choosing a college or university.

Through individual meetings, group guidance activities, and interaction with parents and other members of the school community, students are assisted at each grade level in academic, personal and social development.

LEADERSHIP

SLUH’s strong athletic tradition continues today with teams in 19 interscholastic sports programs. A founding member of the Metro Catholic Conference (MCC), SLUH has routinely captured the MCC All-Sports Trophy, awarded to the member school with the best varsity conference finish in all sports. In the past 10 years, SLUH’s teams have had success at all levels. DISTRICT — state tournament qualifying titles in Baseball (a remarkable 26 consecutive seasons), Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball and Water Polo. STATE — top 4 finishes at state tournaments for teams in Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Ice Hockey, Inline Hockey, Lacrosse, Racquetball, Rifle, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming & Diving, Track & Field, Volleyball and Water Polo. NATIONAL — ranking in Baseball, Cross Country and Soccer. The Racquetball team has won seven consecutive national championships.

Since 1818, SLUH has been preparing young men for college and to become intelligent and compassionate human beings and leaders in their communities. In turn, our students have the opportunity to take part in cultural and educational trips to countries around the world. Since its founding in 1818, SLUH has graduated thousands of young men. Alumni and current parents are vital constituents within our school community. The school is fortunate to have more than 12,000 living alumni, many of whom remain very involved and support the school in countless ways. SLUH’s alumni have distinguished themselves in professional fields such as religion, government, social work, medicine, law, business, engineering, sports and education. The parents not only support their sons in their school endeavors, but also support the institution by donating their skills, talents, time and resources to organize a wide range of social and fundraising events, as well as service‑oriented activities.

URBAN SETTING SLUH’s 27-acre campus is situated in Forest Park South in the city of St. Louis. Its location provides an ideal setting to cultivate relationships which benefit students with such notable institutions as Saint Louis Science Center, Forest Park, Missouri Botanical Garden, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis.

SLUH’s urban setting allows students and faculty to have access to cultural, educational and service opportunities. For example, Forest Park serves as home base for the Cross Country, Golf and Tennis teams. Local corporations provide internships for our students to explore their career interests. Students also benefit from experiences provided by the Art Museum, History Museum, Missouri Botanical Garden, Science Center and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Beyond all that, the SLUH community puts their faith into action through its Community Service Program at more than 80 service sites in the metropolitan area.

You should know that our student body mirrors St. Louis’ geographic and socioeconomic diversity and we admit students based on their ability to succeed, rather than their economic circumstances. Our tuition for the 2017–18 school year is $16,800, yet $4.1 million in need-based scholarships have been awarded to nearly 40% of the students.
