Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising – Graduates for 2018.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to South Metropolitan TAFE’s 2018 Graduate Fashion Show, weARE. Our annual graduate fashion show is in its 48th year and features designs from our talented Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Merchandising students; the culmination of an intense three years of study at South Metropolitan TAFE’s Bentley Campus. The graduate show is an opportunity for students to present their work to employers, media, friends, family and the fashion industry. For many, this is the start of an exciting career in the energetic world of fashion. It also reflects the unwavering commitment and support given to the students by their lecturers who inspire and challenge them to achieve their best. South Metropolitan TAFE has built a strong reputation as a quality provider of vocational education and training in fashion and textiles over the last 40 years. As the show commences this evening, I offer my congratulations to this talented group of students. Your hard work and determination has paid off and I hope you all go on to have successful and rewarding careers. We hope you enjoy the evening. Terry Durant Managing Director South Metropolitan TAFE

vintage treasure

Claire Randall Born from the desire to create heirlooms and a love of vintage treasures, textiles, art and fashion, Nomadic Bazaar evolved from a global treasure hunt for materials. Jacquards, silks, velvets, beads, jewellery and trims were unearthed in market bazaars across Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand. Each piece in the collection has its own story – with the journeys of the textile and its makers entangled in each thread. Rituale offers uniquely designed, nostalgic fashion for today’s bohemian people, the global wanderer and suburban day dreamer. Promoting conscious consumption through transitional and interchangeable pieces, the Nomadic Bazaar collection focuses on wearability and collectability, while embracing the lifestyle of the modern nomad.

Alzena Allan Neon signs illuminate the city at night as the weekend unfolds. Beads gleam and shimmer in the shadows of urban laneways. Chain-link fences segregate the cityscape evoking danger and mystery. In The Night embraces risky silhouettes and dangerous seamlines for evening glamour from dusk ‘til dawn.

Maddison Brown Via Haze explores ethereal and indistinct light and the feeling of not quite recollecting a fading dream. Zero-waste fabric manipulations in tea-dyed dusky tonal palettes of silk and bamboo capture filmy movement and shadowy drape. Organic pintucking, irregular drawstrings, haphazard shirring and dense circle-cut and folded layers create gentle and airy silhouettes. Via Haze – romantic, unaffected, otherworldly.

Donna Sagnip Inspired by Ancient Egypt, Hatshepsut is a modern interpretation of primeval Egyptian hieroglyphics and painting. The colours red, yellow, blue, green, black, white and gold evoked symbolic meaning in Egyptian culture. White- Purity, Blue- Creation, Red- Chaos, Yellow- Indestructible. Working with flax fibres reminiscent of the time, Hatshepsut creates this primal colour palette through dye process and handpainting. Bold, primitive line and rounded organic silhouettes capture the stylised simplicity in a fresh and contemporary context.

sentimentality entality

Catherine Kelly The sentimental Victorian art of capturing flowers in books as remembrances of points in time inspires Fleur Preservee. I adopted a very authentic approach in my textile development. Like the drying of French provincial flowers between pages of blotting paper; I embedded pressed and dried market garden flowers between layers of tulle and silk organza. The colour and structure of the flowers are preserved through coating in polymer before embedding in the textile. Using a modern take on heritage craft, I photographed my development to create a digital print textile to complement the artisan process. Combined with corsetry construction techniques and feminine silhouette, Fleur Preservee captures the sentimentality and heritage of another era.

Tarnah Stol Through the Flames is inspired by the powerful and historical figure that is Joan of Arc. Rich colours team with battled black, burnt orange, and parchment to illustrate the journey of a young peasant girl from the fields to a powerful figure of strength and pride. Delivering brooding style in a relaxed feminine form, celebrating imperfection with an edge in silhouette, drape, and fabric manipulation. “Hold the cross high so I may see it through the flames.

Emily Hansord The intricate and sumptuous architecture of the Palace of Augustenburg in Denmark is the epitome of the lush Rococo era. The sinewy lines of gilded filigree detailing and soft palettes of the interior inspire Cuvillies. Precise panels and seamline in leather and brocade capture the majesty, structure and strength of the architect Francois De Cuvilles. In contrast, sensual silhouettes, blush velvets, gold lambskin and shimmer effects illuminate the ornate opulence and extravagance of the Rococo era in this inaugural launch of the Cuvillies collection.

Priya Fewkes Inspired by the derelict remains of a house in the central tourist district of Athens, Katepeirรณ explores the contrast of a city littered with the ruins of the modern and ancient eras. With a focus on sustainable dye process and zero-waste pattern making technique, the collection finds beauty in the unrefined, artless and authentic. Classic feminine silhouettes contrast with dishevelled textures and fabrications in a testament to the beauty in the dilapidate, or Katepeirรณ.

Jasmine O’Brien Inspired by the passion of the protesters in the 2017 Women’s March, Femtomic channels the power, strength and unity of women fighting for equality. An explosion of colour and texture through hand-curated, mixed media fabrics expresses the fervour and emotion of the protest, and the tapestry of picket signs through the vehement crowd. Embroidered caricature portraits and screen print images sketch portrayals of the female activists in an unapologetically loud collection.

sartorial whimsy

Alice Wiame A hopeless romantic at heart, my collection reflects the allure, opulence and history of my own French heritage. Inspired by the penchant of Marie Antoinette for excess and extravagance, and the exuberant and lavishly decorated salons of the Rococo period, Mademoiselle Royale captures the nostalgia and decadence of the era. 45 minutes away from Marie Antoinette’s residence at the Chateau du Petit Trianon in Versailles; foraging for fabrics in the streets of Paris, I found a market in Saint Pierre selling intricate laces and textiles. I began to build a collection of silk, leather, beaded-lace and French mesh, utilising heritage techniques such as corsetry, drape, lace appliquÊ, hand-beading, leather quilting and crystal embroidery. Decadence, sartorial whimsy and a love of finery – Mademoiselle Royale.

Payton Hovey The shadowy backstreets of Shinjuku at night have a compelling story of tradition colliding with modern chaos. The jumbled confusion of powerlines, uncontrolled mass of vertical neon signage and collision of historic and modern structures inspire the collection Tokyo After 5. Referencing these contrasting elements, I evolve heritage design and textile technique with modern innovation. Rich pleated raw silks and luminous hand-beading merge with distressed denim and tangled thread. With an attentiveness to meticulous Gerber patternmaking and exceptional fit, Tokyo After 5 combines the contemporary with aged tradition.
