FROM THE RECTOR The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need. This Sunday marks the final Sunday of Epiphany, and we now look toward the holy season of Lent. This Wednesday, February 14, is Ash Wednesday. We will be offering worships services throughout the day, so please look in the back of this bulletin or on our website for times that work for you. In addition, the weekday clergy meditations begin on Ash Wednesday and are a wonderful way to center yourself each day. As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

César Franck gave the first performance of the Trois Pièces on 1 October 1878, in the Salle des Fêtes (Festival Hall) of the new Palais du Trocadéro, which had been built for the Universal Exhibition held in Paris that year. Two of Franck’s most devoted disciples couldn’t help ascribing a spiritual element to the exquisite “Cantabile,” however, Vincent d’Indy noting that it is “the typical prayer of an artist who is also a true Christian,” and the ever-devout Tournemire eulogizing, “The soul’s unsatisfied desire—a saint’s inner supplication—incessant pleas—faith in divine mercy.”
The order of worship begins on page 61 of the red Book of Common Prayer.

Welcome (seated)
The Reverend Kenneth H. Brannon
Introit (seated, sung by the choir) Hail! gladdening Light
Charles Wood
Hail! gladdening Light, of His pure glory poured Who is the immortal Father, heavenly, blest, Holiest of Holies-Jesus Christ our Lord! Now we are come to the Sun’s hour of rest; The lights of evening round us shine; We hymn the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit divine! Worthiest art thou at all times to be sung
Charles Wood stands as one of the great composers of Anglican church music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An Irishman who spent his adult life in England including several teaching posts in Cambridge, his students included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells. Most of Wood’s church music was written with the professional Cambridge college choirs in mind. “Hail! gladdening Light” is one such work, relying upon the interplay of the two choirs for its effect. Being inclined to high churchmanship, Wood regularly turned to translations of older texts: in this case the text is a translation by John Keble from the Greek.

Hymn 35
Sir Joseph Barnby
Hallelujah! When Israel came out of Egypt, * the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech, Judah became God’s sanctuary * and Israel his dominion. The sea beheld it and fled; * Jordan turned and went back. The mountains skipped like rams, * and the little hills like young sheep. What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? * O Jordan, that you turned back? You mountains, that you skipped like rams? * you little hills like young sheep? Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, * at the presence of the God of Jacob,

Who turned the hard rock into a pool of water * and flint-stone into a flowing spring. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirt: * As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. The First Lesson Deuteronomy 6:1-9 (seated) Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the ordinances—that the LORD your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, so that you and your children and your children’s children, may fear the LORD your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and Bob Chilcott is an English composer who has been involved in choral music his entire life, first as a chorister and then a choral scholar in the choir of King’s College, Cambridge. Later, he sang and composed music for 12 years with the King’s Singers. He became a full-time composer and conductor in 1997, and has since composed a large catalogue of choral music. The Downing Service is Chilcott’s first setting of the Evening Service, written for the Choir of Downing College, Cambridge. The Magnificat is a powerful setting of the Canticle of Mary, with homophonic textures and strong harmonies.

talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Magnificat (seated, sung by the choir) Downing Service
Bob Chilcott My soul doth magnify the Lord:
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from hence forth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: And hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things: And the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: And to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. - Luke 1:46-55 Luke 9:18-27 (seated)
The Second Lesson
Once when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They answered, “John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.” He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, saying, “The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” Then he said to them all, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words, of them the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.” Nunc Dimittis (seated, sung by the choir) Downing Service
Bob Chilcott
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation; Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
The Downing Service is Chilcott’s first setting of the Evening Service, written for the Choir of Downing College, Cambridge. The Nunc Dimittis is an expressive and poignant setting of the hymn of praise sung by Simeon.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: And to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. - Luke 2:29-35 Hymn (standing, sung by all) “O for a closer walk with God” Caithness
The Apostles’ Creed (standing, intoned by all) Officiant and People I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.

Hymn 684
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers (standing)

The Collects (standing) Officiant O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Choir
Amen.
Officiant Lord God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ triumphed over the powers of death and prepared for us our place in the new Jerusalem: Grant that we, who have this day given thanks for his resurrection, may praise thee in that City of which he is the light; and where he liveth and reigneth for ever and ever. Choir
Amen.
Officiant Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love’s sake. Choir

Abide with me
Moses Hogan
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. I need Thy presence every passing hour. What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who, like Thyself,
Randall Thompson was an American composer. He received his doctorate in music from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. This piece was written at the request of Dr. Serge Koussevitzky for the opening exercises of the Berkshire Music Center, at which it was first performed by the student body, under the direction of Professor G. Wallace Woodworth, July 8, 1940.
my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. O Thou who changest not, abide with me. In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Amen. - Henry F. Lyte, 1847 The General Thanksgiving (standing, spoken by all) Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men.
Moses Hogan was an American composer and arranger who remains one of the most well-known names related to African American spirituals. Over his lifetime, he published 88 arrangements for voice. This arrangement of the hymn by William Monk was dedicated to Professor Joseph Schwartz at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and was originally sung by the Oberlin College Choir under the director of Hugh Floyd.
We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee

in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A Prayer of St. Chrysostom (standing) Officiant Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The Dismissal (standing) Officiant People
Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn 46
Postlude Offertoire from L’Organiste
César Franck
L’Organiste is an unfinished collection of 59 harmonium pieces. Franck had received an order from the Parisian publisher Enoch to write an album for the harmonium containing pieces in all major and minor keys. Unfortunately, Franck passed away before the set was finished. The arrangements in this collection follow an identical format; six short movements are followed by a longer movement which combines elements of the preceding movements. Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
